Which Sony Camera To Buy In 2023

As an FX3 owner I agree the A7IV is the better buy. Unless you need better rolling shutter performance, slow-mo with zero crop, or you're often shooting somewhere extremely hot, save some money and buy the A7IV. The picture quality is comparable and it has a few nice features the FX3 doesn't (ie. lens breathing comp). I love my FX3, but if the A7IV had come out at the same time I would have bought it instead to save some cash, and for the photo capabilities.

Great job on the video Mark! Thanks for making it. I bet after the first of the year we're going to get a A70. A7IV body (with the handy photo/video/s&q dial) with the APS-C sensor from the FX30, mechanical shutter, and the screen off the A7RV. Their new crop-sensor flagship hybrid ringing in $1899. 4K, 60p with no additional crop, all the stabilization they offer, and focus breathing compensation.

Nice. I knew some of the distinctions but not all of them. Thanks for clarifying the full production line. I think i will get an fx30 at some point, a bit overkill for my needs but i really don’t like that the zve10 doesn’t have in body stabilization, i basically shoot most things handheld and i like the little shakiness i get with an in body stabilization, without it my footage would be straight up unusable 😅

I have my ZV-E10, which I love, but I don’t think I’m using it in the best way for me. So I ended up canceling my FX30 (backordered) to invest more time in education & practice with my ZV-E10. I’m looking forward to picking up the 10-20mm lens that Sony just released.

Watching your videos guided me through my ZV-e10 purchase and my first lens for it. Now I'm stepping up to an a7iv and still watching :)

Mark, great content as always. Ended up picking up a lightly used a7SIII. Was back and forth between the A7IV and FX30 (mainly because I have multiple lenses for my ZV-E10). After watching your FX30 content, decided it was now between the a7SIII and a7IV. Since 99% of my photos are for social media, decided the 7SIII was the better choice. It still does crop in photo mode and can clear image zoom in video if you need to use a APSC lens.

Hey Mark! Love the content, I already watched a lot of your other videos and reviews surrounding this, but I would still like to try and ask you directly. My intended use would primarily be vlogging and some indoor/outdoor video recording/content creation. I'm a complete beginner and this would be my first camera. I was really considering the stabilization for when I vlog, I saw you showcase catalyst browse and it seems really good, but I also see the ZV-1 has less of a crop with the built in stabilization. Do you think to make things easier I should just get the ZV-1? Or do you think the ZV-E10 is more worth it and I should just use catalyst browse? Basically given this information, If you were in my shoes would you get the ZV-E10 or the ZV-1 (or maybe even the ZV-1F?)? Thanks a lot in advance and once again I love the content!

I I have been taking your advice for about 6 mo now Mark, and you never lead anyone wrong! Thank you for locking yourself in the basement and all the work you put into your videos. I started with the ZVE-10 (Cousin Steve), recently picked up the A7IV, and I do believe the FX30 will be the final camera to round out my collection for a while. Then I can spend some money on quality glass :) Once again appreciate your videos and hope all is well with you & your family! And...no apple juice today?

Excellent breakdown of the Sony cameras available in 2022. Personally, I would have liked to have held onto the A7iv. But, the FX30 has so many features geared towards filmmaking, I knew I had to get one. The nice thing about the FX30 is the sensor has very little chroma noise compared to other Sony cameras. With a minor adjustment in noise reduction, you can get the look of film like grain in FX30 footage. Many people complain about "noise", but, if you're looking for film like image quality you're going to have some amount of noise/grain in your footage. It's when you get super clean footage that you start leaning towards the "digital look". Ultimately, it comes down to striking a balance. Look at the movie, "The Revenant". It had a ton of grain (aka "noise") in its imagery. But, it was also critically acclaimed for its cinematography. What's great about these newer cameras, like the FX30 with its 6K downsampled to 4K image, and the A7iv with its 7K downsampled to 4K, you can show these films/videos in movie theaters and experience the same level of quality of most Hollywood films. You may not have the dynamic range of the Sony Venice and Arri ALEXA. But, most people sitting in the theater won't know the difference.

Using now ZV-E10 with 15mm F1,4 with gimbal most times. Waiting for second body to buy some new release APSC format with better stabilization (don't like any 6000th) for new to me 70-350 lens. Have experience with FF Nikon D750 with two huge lenses which is long time in rest on shelve. For my Hobby times Crop Sensor is Gold choice in terms of quality AND size/weigh points. In outside walking LOVE to use my Insta360 with such a unbeatable passion original editing .Thank you for nice choice organize in Sony cam's.

I was initially going to get the ZV-E10, but it wasn't readily available, so I purchased the A7IV. Even though the A7IV costs a lot more than the ZV-E10, I am very happy with my purchase. Thank you Mark for your videos. They are very helpful, and I enjoy watching. The only thing missing from this video was your glass of beer.

My favorite camera in the lineup right now is the FX3 however the most underrated camera in the entire lineup is the A7c! I hope they remake the A7c but put it in the ZV lineup. And just one camera to add as a sidenote is the Sony RX1Rii. I would really love to see a new RX1 🥰

Wow…pretty much everything most folks need to know about Sony’s in just over 15 minutes! My favorite Sony vlogging camera of all time….Sony FDR X3000. Love it (at least in good light), more like a mini camcorder with very good stabilization. Sadly, don’t think it will ever get reintroduced again. Great video!

Left out the category of RX10 cameras. The best bridge camera made with 1" sensor. RX10MK IV is with me along with my A1 and A9 as it is so capable lens range wise and will surprise you with the images you can get with it.

Great Stuff as always Mark. Hell, I'd watch you do a video about the current Tax Codes but...... yeah, your camera reviews/comparisons are WAY more to my liking. Looking forward to a "deep dive" into the FX30 settings etc. In the meantime, I'll sit patiently and wait for my a7R-V to ship while sipping a refreshing "apple juice". (Tell Douggie that his buddy Walter says "Hey!").

My favorite Sony camera is the ZV-E10, because that's the only one I got 😄 Great for it's purpose, as a secondary video camera and for some vlogging. For the rest I prefer Nikon.

Love how you land the plane immediately. I have used your technique in my videos lately. that ZV1-F will be my next top down camera. Do you think it can handle having a dummy battery in it, never being turned off? I had a Sony a5000 turned on for 18 months straight with little issue.

I missed the (2017) 1" bridgecamera RX10iv (equivalent zoomrange 24-600mm f2.4-f4), which is a nice do it all every day camera. It has no successor yet.

The A7R5 with the new screen and AWB and A- ISO that seems to work (Manny Ortiz - Taylor Jackson) would be my only Sony choice. I'm sure the new screen will be in Sony cameras going forward, but will the new white balance and exposure, apparently they need the new chip.

With FX30, I'm excited to see the new APSC lineup in 2023. I'm sure we will see that sensor in all of the updated A6000s series (A6100, A6400, A6600).

Hey Mark great channel, love your work. I need some advice, been trolling inter web thingy and mainly RU-vid looking for the right camera. Long story short, the Sony zv e10 is everything I want except for it’s soft build and lack of weather proofing. I need mainly video, v logging centric but the ability to shift lenses to take client pics by a stream. It needs to be tough enough to be in a pack all day and take a splash or a little drizzle. I mainly use GoPros in and close to water but need a cam that will take high quality video in the backcountry, vlog , and the odd photo. It also needs to be my main studio cam……….oh I need great stabilisation but happy to run footage through catalyst browse. So what is the Swiss Army knife of cameras that will meet my needs? Does it exist? Max budget would be 2x the cost of a zv-e10. Let’s see how good you really are!,

I slightly regret beginning to photograph with Sony instead of Canon. I started with the A7 and then went on with the A7III. Those were the best at the time, but nowadays Canon and Nikon release stacked sensor camera's with high resolution images with incredible AF. Sony either has high FPS and low res, low FPS and high res or both high res and high FPS for an insane price. Just look at the Nikon Z8, 46MP with 20 FPS raw or 120fps in jpeg for the price of the A7R V.

Hey Mark, just finally got my FX30 and I have to ask, coming off filming with ZV-e10 on Video Manual mode with 1/60 @ f1.4 with iso set to auto and for some reason with the same settings the FX30 I can’t seem to make things happen. The M.M icon on my FX30 goes nuts (different from my ZV-e10) … any suggestions on settings on how I can start shooting asap, similar to ZV-e10? Apologies in advance if this is a stupid question.

What about Sony's bridge camera line the RX10 series. I love my Sony RX10 mark IV. Hope they will make a 5.

Mark I’m a beginner & I had just brought a like New Sony NEX 7 with the Kit Lens 2 batteries 🪫 & the charger 🔌 for $300 & I wanted to know do you think that the Kit Lens that comes with the Sony ZV-E10 is a better quality lens then the one that comes with the NEX? I have a small set up in my home music studio because I want to vlog on RU-vid so if I was to upgrade after I get my 1K subscribers I was thinking about going with the Sony - E 50mm F1.8 OSS Portrait Lens (SEL50F18) what do you think? any help would be a appreciated.

8:00 a7iii or a7c in my country cost 1.4-1.6k usd new and add 1k usd more to get a7iv it's not small money to add 1K USD.

I have the ZV-E10 (thanks to you, Mark) and it does everything I want - I bought the Sigma 30mm 1.4 to go with it and its kit lens (your fault, Mark!) - but I'm just a casual, the 56mm Sigma is also next on my list (Guess who is to blame for that, Mark?) 😉

hello, I want to build a new set and I have been following your videos for a long time. That's why I need your opinion)) I usually take photos, but the photos I take are printed on 2x1 banners, albeit a little. But I also shoot video. I'm torn between sony a7iv and fujiiflm xh2. Do you think it would be enough for someone like Fuji Beniö? Or what would you recommend?

@1:00 is your sensor size example backwards? Don't full frame sensors produce a wide field of view compared to aps-c/1-inch, which 'crop in'???

Good review but you dismiss the RX100vii as just a point and shoot camera. It's much more versatile than that; lots of manual controls; very "pocketable;" Zeiss 24-200mm f2.8-4.5 lens; decent pop-up EVF; shoots good 4k video as well. An all around great little camera but due an update and overpriced at $1,300. Also, no mention of the RX 10 cameras? I totally agree with your recommendation of the A7iv, which I own. Great hybrid camera.

Hey man, awesome content. I love watching these videos. I need some guidance though. I currently just monetized my channel and have some brand sponsors I will be traveling with in 2023. My content is about menswear/lifestyle so my videos are a mix between stationary shots, b-roll, and travel. I’ve been using my iPhone 13 PM but I really want to upgrade for some big travel gigs next year. I use the 4K60 a lot to show up close details of clothes/shoes/gear. The ZVE10 seems great just due to price. But I’m also really considering just investing in the FX30 for the insane 4K120 and awesome quality. Record limits don’t matter because I’m switching scenes pretty quickly. Rarely do I ever take photos except for thumbnails. Is the FX30 worth the extra money over the ZVE10?

People say that small sensors are no good for large prints. It’s s a myth in my view. Large prints are best at 150-300dpi. Up to A1 and larger. Huge poster prints are usually just 72dpi. The larger a photo is the further you have to stand away from it, so super resolution is not of any help there.

ZVE10 + Sony 15mm 1.4

Being a regular viewer of your channel, I appreciate your work and value your very personal angle on gear and skills. But here, you seem to suffer from this strange "YT disease" : the "RX10 cloaking". A really strange contamination, to which many scientists admit having no explanation to. 🤣 What's up with this camera, invisible to many ? I bought the M3 and kept it some 20 months, then got the M4 (in 2019) and still currently use it. And intensely, to say the least ! I sold photographs and films, filmed/shot with this camera. I paired it with the amazing DxO PhotoLab software (and its incredible DeepPrime noise reducer), and managed to blow out of the water "full frame" cameras, those costing 4 to 5 times the price. I had two TV channels asking for sequences from my own work to illustrate their reports, after they saw how clean, bright, deep, broadcast-level, the videos produced by this camera are. This "imaging Swiss knife" has no competition, it can do product photography, interviews (outside and inside, especially with the best editing softwares), films as camera B, landscape (with its 24 mm equivalent), wildlife and sport photography (very fast hybrid AF, 600 mm equivalent, same menus and settings as most pre-2020 Sony bodies), live shows and stage filming (I recently captured a concert of sacred music, the results were great !), photo-journalism (I regularly shoot events for villages, associations, clubs, etc. and get rave reviews everytime), documentaries (I have a project in developement, and the RX10M4 will be my secret weapon)... and the list would go on. A true "imaging Swiss knife". So, why skipping on the best 1" sensor camera there is (considering all its flaws, of course : average in low light, weak stabilisation, only 20 Mpix with very limited reframing lattitude, too small NP-FW50 batteries) ? The RX100M7 surely is a great camera, but it gives lots of ground to its bigger RX10M4 brother (even though the latter is nearly 4 years old). Every user of this camera is now eagerly waiting for the next (M5) generation, hoping for a 10 bit processing and (let's dream) S-cinetone picture profile. If you don't know this camera, or have been a victim of this weird contamination, take a while and have a look at it. I can safely say you won't regret it, and may consider it for a future test or comparison.

Only 6 days left in 2022 to by a camera. This video will be obsolete faster than my cameras. 😢

If you want a "system camera" ... then do NOT buy a Sony. Tomorrow's Sony camera will not be compatible with, for example, Sony's flash unit of yesteryear. And if memory serves, then Sony does not even manufacture its own lenses. Not a very good business model, if you ask me -
