I tried to set up a friend with speakers for < $2000 and the KEF ls50 META was a contender. Because he had the space he went with a lightly used pair of the Magnepan 1.7i speakers. They came in at $1600 and he doesn’t even need a sub. Now that’s value, IMO!

Great review Jay! These might be the speakers I have been looking for. I listened to a lot of heavy metal when I was younger. I still get the itch now and then to crank some out, but they are almost all recorded bad and sound way to bright with the speakers I have. My tastes and your tastes seem to meet up fairly well as I now own a few of your recommended pieces of gear. I might have to check these out for when I get that heavy metal itch!

The Dynaudio as you describe it sounds like my type of speaker in a sense that it can deal with different kinds of amplifiers and sound different but still good with them. Now you can just have two or three amplifiers and by changing to them, it is as if you have a whole new set up. Much easier than rotating speakers.

Interesting review and opinion. I personally have never been a fan of KEF speakers. They don't sound bad but never, regardless of model, got my juices flowing. That's what it's all about. If you want a warm sounding speaker you should try to get hold of a pair of NOLA speakers that I own that are so engaging I can listen for hours.

I had Boxers (V1) and often regret getting rid of them, but when you look at the lightweight box and fairly standard drivers, I can't figure out why they cost so much. I think Carl could have taken over the market if they'd been a little cheaper.

Not sure if anybody mentioned this but the choice of DAC can also add brightness or accentuate bright recordings. A different DAC could very well tame these types of recordings without having to change speakers.

Spot on the kef which I’ve owned for 3 years are not really hifi speakers they are far to pushed in the middle and they train you to compensate for this characteristic. The Dynaudio do a better job of giving you a real world accurate representation of what the recording sounds like. I have owned a studio for 30 years and I thought I wanted the LS50 sound because of using Yamaha NS10 monitors for years but I was wrong..

Hi Jay.....thanks again for your great reviews! I wanted to get your advice regarding a decent integrated amplifier selection to pair with the KEF LS50 Meta speakers that would closely price match each other. Also would you consider adding their subwoofer? And do I REALLY need stands? This is for a secondary system because my reference system had to be stored due to selling house and moving so I was encouraged to "hide" everything by my realtor because it will scare off potential buyers due to the space it takes up (aaahhhh)-go figure. All I really want to do is run my DAC/streamer (I am lucky enough to own a DCS Bartok and it is a sin to let it just sit, right? My vinyl will just have to wait. In my opinion your the man to ask for recommendations. I have been hearing lots on the Hegel and Naim lately but again no need to spend fortunes for something "temporary". Thanks and best regards.

I tamed it a bit by putting a resistor in series with the tweeter. I probably would like those Dyna's because they are not at all bright.

At ~$2000, these are on my current shortlist, no sub wanted: -Philharmonic BMR Monitor (A+ sound, but weak imaging due to excessive soundstage width) -HECO Celan R3 (apparently great sound, but terrible cabinet component stabilization; fixable DIY) -Buchardt S400 MKII (apparently solid overall, but maybe not as nice as the BMR? The KEF Metas, in my opinion, sound best with a "warm" sounding amplifier. With my tube phono stage, tube preamplifier and class AB Power amp (which has a warm sound) i get a very detailed , spacious, dynamic, sound with no harshness. My room is about 80% absorbent which favours the speaker"imaging.

I got the KEF LS50 meta today. Driving with a Sony TA-N55ES power amp. I’m blown away coming from other 500-1000$ priced speakers. They need to be placed correctly (I’m my opinion Not very toed in and about 6” apart) and the image, separation and micro setup snapped into focus. I think most speakers have issues reproducing voices accurately. I mean like they person is in the room standing in front of you and singing. It sounds fake on most speakers in this range and the Kefs nail the mid frequency here while keeping all other frequencies excellent at the same time. It moved me emotionally. More than once in the first hour of listening.. I’m floored about the many, many years to come with these..

About 70% of my collection is extreme metal, a lot of (intentionally harsh) black metal and sludge especially. I had to carefully put my system together to make both raw metal and audiophile music sound great. Overtly warm and laid back speakers sap all of the energy and grit out of metal (been there.)Conversely, super forward and bright speakers will just rip your ears off with metal (also been there). It's a very fine, difficult line to ride if you want to play metal but ALSO bring out the best of other genres. My advice is to make sure your source is smooth sounding, your amp muscular sounding, and your speakers just a tad lively but capable of strong bass. Keeps things engaging, visceral, but not painful or boring.

@@felipencl I fell the SP40 have a more laid back sounding, with a more focused and deeper soundstage. In my opinion, LS50 have a more forward sound and 3d imaging. @zach2954
@zach2954 Год назад
@@felipencl Special 40s are more resolving, but LS50 Meta has more precise imaging, although the difference is not night and day. Soundstage is where the differences are most noticeable, as the two speakers have a different presentation all together. LS50 Metas has a more 'spherical' soundstage, with forward vocals. SP40 is deeper and more neutral. For my system, I have a pair of Heritage Specials, paired on the analog side with a tube phono stage. The tubes bring you 'into' the sound stage (Similar to the metas! but not with super forward vocals), with the feel that you can walk into the stage. Being able to drastically change the staging with my Dyns is the best of both worlds imo! (I upgraded from LS50 Metas) The biggest benefit of the LS50 Metas over my HS (and SP40 too) is that their off-axis listening is much better, although this doesn't matter too much unless you listen frequently with many people. tldr: metas: more precise imaging, forward mids, smaller stage. SP40: not as precise imaging, neutral presentation, deeper and wider stage Hope this helps

I just have been trying to solve the very same problem. Coming from yamaha 2100 matching with dali rubicon2s, there was no way I could enjoi trash metal, death metal with this system. So I started auditioning speakers as well as listening sound demos on youtube with reference headphone. Long story short; I bought polk r200 since they are not bright and has nice thumping bass but still driving them with yamaha 2100 didn't cut it for me. I found the solution on aiyima t9 with less instrument separation, resolution but with tone controls. (I was so annoyed with cymbals sounding like a separate song with more resolving amps.) Only thing that still is not working for me is that it doesn't go really really loud. So I ended up using t9 as a pre and added aiyima a08 as a power amp. In this setup I got more resolution and soundstage yet the instrument separation still wasn't annoying but didn't get the loudness I was expecting. I think r200 with t9 is really good match for this scenario I totally recommend it. Oh and I am using ifi zen dac v2 in this setup.

I had the previous model AS 1100 and it was also way to bright the tone adjustments on Yamaha were little to no effect. I purchased a REL sub it helped but still too bright and then i switched to Polk r700 floor speakers that helped by 50% improvement. More recently i installed 2 Emotiva mono blocks via pre-outputs. Just using the Yamaha as a pre-AMP. With this last change it really sounds so much better amazing sound stage and no longer annoying top end or hurting my ears with brightness. Sad that my old vintage receiver which cost thousands less had better tone controls.

Interesting take on the dynaudio, I have the emit 30’s with a Hegel H120. It’s good but I find it a bit dull sometimes so I’m thinking about paring them with the new NAD C399 . From what you are saying this combination would work really well together.

I know a lot of people like Hegel, some say is neutral-sounding, personally I find it to be a tad laid back. Although many folks have no qualms in pairing up Hegel with Dynaudio, for my personal preference I am not keen on such a pairing. In my opinion, ideally you need something a bit more punchy and dynamic to drive most Dynaudios to make them sound best. For example, I am currently using a Roksan Blak to drive a pair of Evoke 50.

It seems to me that it is a lot more difficult for the average Joe to put together a system. I don’t have tube amps laying around to try on my speakers or any different power amps for that matter. I used to go to big box electronics store’s , Best Buy, Ultimate Electronics, The Upper Ear a specialty Local electronics store. Now you have to rely on reviewers to tell us what is good for you in their opinion. Most of the time Ai don’t even know what you reviewers are talking about or describing. How about a video on what the words your describing means. Rolled off, warm, colored, bright, just to mention a few. Can you really hear a hole in the music like measurements can, if so how. I’ve been listening to music for 40 years and I don’t understand how you reviewers hear all this stuff.
@34332
@34332 Год назад
Just to be clear, are you referring to integrated amps or speakers or both?
@marcgabor9690
@marcgabor9690 Год назад
Willie, let me offer you a different perspective. It is actually quite easy for the "average Joe" to watch a couple reviews and purchase a system from crutchfield or Best Buy consisting of readily available products from the likes of KEF, Polk, B&W, NAD, Denon, Yamaha, etc... and end up with a totally satisfactory system. They all make good sound, none is really that much worse than the other, just different. The only way you could ever know if there's something that you like better than what you have is by performing comparisons in your room. If I told you that three different brands of sparkling water all tasted a little different you might not believe me until I pour three different glasses of water for you. Then you might be able to describe the subtle differences in carbonation and minerality and pick a favorite. However, they will all quench your thirst and if only one was available you would probably be fine. As for descriptors, it really is subjective. but rolled off refers to a frequency response. If something rolls off it attenuates (can roll off low or high freqs) and it usually refers to the high frequencies rolling off at the extremities, ie less treble. warm usually means a little bit of a fatter, richer sound, probably due to some combination of a subtle accentuation of the upper bass frequencies and attenuation of the upper mid frequencies. Bright means more treble information, dark means less treble information. these are very general explanations but try messing around with the eq on your system or in your car with these words in mind and see if it makes any sense. Good luck.

I can see both sides. Yes, there are so many more choices than there use to be and because of that lots of us have to rely on reviewers for info vs being able to audition systems. Most of us start w/ stats and measurements and piece together a system they’re happy with. Then there is some of us, me included, who start tinkering and learn more about how speaker placement, setup and how room treatment can really effect sound quality along with a bunch of other factors like equipment matching for your preferred sound. What Jay excels at is people going to the next level and he speaks at a more advance level, imo, in terms of discussing his journey into sound. What’s great is you can pause, look up, rewatch anything that you don’t understand. I think it’s worth it because Jay is probably one of the best, most informative RU-vidrs out there right now in audio. I wish Jay would get into Home Theaters which is where most of my audio budget/time goes into, however, 2ch audio is the foundation and the best place to start IMO.

If you refer to amps, you can buy a neutral amp with a flat frequency response for not much money. However, some manufacturers deliberately voice their amps. Personally I want a neutral amp, and not a sound dictated by the maker. As for speakers, there is no perfect speaker, so choice has to be subjective, and dependent on your room acoustics. There is no point accepting someone else’s opinion. Some people hate my speakers, some love them. However, you can get acceptable speakers for not that much money. Try them yourself, many shops allow demos.

my god you did a good review. you were so articulate in describing these. i also have used both and am a big dynaudio fan, BUT, it's for all the reasons you outlined. if you play metal. if you play EDM and you like to really put the power down. they are just a lot less fatiguing. i like how they reproduce the 1-2khz range. deeper sound. many speakers like the LS50 which i don't mind at lower volume levels just reveal their flaws when you play them near their limit. the imaging and detail they are very good at quickly becomes something i notice, it's more forward, more in your face, not disappearing in the music like i do with dynaudio. this review you have given is to date the best one i have watched comparing these two. you articulate exactly what they are better than i ever could.
