We mostly travel in our van and pop up so we have a little more space. I managed to get all of it into an REI toiletries roll up. The Tier one stuff fits in the little bottom removable pouch.

Good list. Salt and pepper will be all I keep in my pack though. When I know im gonna catch and cook some trout I'll throw a lemon or two just to get a little bit fancy.

Years ago I ordered a bulk of little 2x3” ziplocks. I organize each meal in its own bag and use the tiny ziplocks for whatever spices/powders each meal requires. Also use these for packing powdered milk, small #s of medications, little things like safety pins, needle and thread. Very light. My longest trips are about 3-4 nights though so might be better to have a spice kit for longer treks. Love the NUUN bottle idea.

I save tic-tac containers for my trail seasoning. My kids will gladly help me empty them when I need another.

Back in the 80’s army I used to take film cans of spices out in the field with me to give the MREs some flavor. Old Bay went well with many menus,

Some aditions I would suggest: -Miso paste -tomato paste -powdered seaweed (you can buy two types of dried seaweed and blend them at home till it forms a powder/flakes) -nut butters, specially cashew for a cheesy flavor -speaking of cheesy, nutritional yeast Been thinking about using those meds containers (the ones that have multiple chambers with the days of the week) to bring my spices. At least the ones who are solid.

Excellent breakdown of both logic and realism! Especially like the tiered breakdown. As others here have pointed out, airplane liquor bottles work well for dry seasonings or small amounts. You can get a bunch of plastic ones online for pretty cheap.

Tic-Tac containers work great as do mini glitter tubes. I believe 5 tubes will fit in an Altoid tin.. Mini single serve liquor bottles work great for carrying oils and seasonings as well

I've been using old mini spice containers or mini paint cups. Mini glitter tubes are a great idea! I'm going to give that a try!

Thanks for sharing. The tier approach seem to be very practical. Not buying spices in the grocery store is a very good tip. In some of the stores I saw spices displayed in a hot, sunny spot and the front layers bleached by UV light. I wonder if those items have any flavour left in them. Where I buy chilli powder or curry powder salt is not even in the ingriedient list. I like that as gives me control over the amount of salt I use.

Inspired by this video bought my first juice shots, Kor brand. I bought them from Whole Foods and used my Prime member discount. Then I found out that the bottles were SO environmentally friendly! Free spice jars!

Your channel has become one of three i look for every day. You have a great personality! It’s refreshing to see real trail food. This is how i’ve been eating while backpacking for forty five years. My wife thinks i am insane. Now i can show her that if i am indeed insane, i am not alone for my love of real and healthy food. You use an assortment of stoves and pots. I am curious, which ones are your favorites? My “aaahhh moment” was the twinkie and strawberries. Definitely trying that on a trip next week! I haven’t had a twinkie for fifty years. Thanks and keep up the great work!

Cheers DW! All due respect to your wife, but I think it's insane to eat dehydrated food out a bag and not have tasty meals after a long day on the trail. Happy to have you aboard. Re stoves: I consistently like MSRs burners but all brands have their pros and cons.

Have taken some of those on trips, mostly tier 1 and some tier 2 - something I'm going to try next is some mushroom powder I made from blitzing some mushrooms I dehydrated in a coffee grinder! I always take virgin olive oil - mostly cos the virgin kind here tends to be available in little bottles - pepper and salt sachets stolen from cafes and McDonalds ;-) and parmesan/hard Italian powdered cheese - although the flakes are better. I did take ground black pepper once but oddly found I never used it. Also took some japanese paste, again never used it .Will definitely try garlic powder though and italian herbs, lemon, and balsamic cos that makes sandwiches way better.

A company called lofthouse makes freeze-dried garlic, it is delicious. Cayenne and some curry powder mix is a staple for me. I was thinking of making kitchen pepper that is hiking specific.

I need to start saving more small bottles and tins! If you have any film photography friends in you life, the old 35mm film canisters also work really well. Have you done anything covering campsite adult beverages?

film canisters are my go-to for storing all kinds of camping/trail gear. I always bring one filled with my own "house seasoning" (salt, pepper, granulated garlic and onion and a bit of chipotle powder) and use them to make my own "trail k-cups" (4 teaspoons Cafe Bustelo or Medaglio D'oro instant espresso, 1 teaspoon sugar and a pinch of salt - perfect for a 12 ounce cup of coffee).

What is your protocol for keeping bears away with such a good smelling backpack lol? Do you hang it up or bring a bear canister for those backpacking trips?

If I want to store oil in my car For future camping trips which is the best long term oil storage that wont go rancid ?
@maxlutz3674
@maxlutz3674 2 года назад
Canola oil and olive oil keep fairly well. I would only store the oil - or spices - in a car during the camping trip. The heat in the summer can be very hard on any food item stored there.
@ChefCorso
@ChefCorso 2 года назад
@@maxlutz3674 ditto ML. Most neutral oils are fine for a moderate amount of time, but there's no getting around heat of the car breaking down the oil

UV is also your enemy… use opaque bottles whenever possible (but label them).
