The 8-bit Famicom entry is also worth seeing. The level where you go into a church and find a ritual where a goat demon is the boss is unexpected for such a chibi-style game.

Worth noting: All three games (no Wanpaku Graffiti unfortunately), including an actual port of the arcade game, are included with the 2010 game. It's worth picking up just for that as the game itself is love it or hate it. 1 is a little more classic but 2 is probably my favorite. The closest you could get to playing an 80's horror movie in the 16-bit era.

I will say the 2010 remake is definitely worth checking out. It's a cross between a 3D and 2D brawler, in a similar vein to God of War. The combat's nowhere near as deep as that, but it still has some surprising depth to it, and the story and writing's really good. You can also unlock the original 3 games as bonuses, which has the completely uncensored Arcade original of the first game instead of the Turbo port.

The Xbox360/PS3 remake has some flaws, but overall, a pretty decent game. And it has all three old games, as unlockable extra.

The arcade version of the original is arguably the best game in the series. There’s way more gore and the soundtrack is awesome.

The 2010 game is a decent with mid-upper difficulty. It doesn't reinvent the wheel, but it combines modern 3D beat 'em up with 2D throwback style. Also, it includes all the original games (except wanpaku graffiti, unfortunately)

I regret that I had to wait until my 20's to play the Splatterhouse games. I still enjoy the heck out of them, but I can only imagine how I would've reacted playing them as a child when they first came out. Nothing quite like the Splatterhouse games. I haven't played the remake, but most people tell me it's good, just not great or similar enough to the originals.

Cronenberg parallel is spot on, but there is little of Lovecraft in the series. Just shows how popular culture absolutely twists whatever phenomenon that becomes trendy. Lovecraft was never about straight up gore and his wierd in not visceral but fantastical. Splatterhouse is splatterpunk to the bone, relying on sharp gruesome visuals, while Lovecraft is often abstract. The Mask is probably the only relatively lovecraftian thing in those games, being an evil artifact with its own pocket dimension.

Easy way for people to play the original 3 games as follows: Beat the following Phases on any difficulty to unlock the original Splatterhouse trilogy. I think just presenting the first two games as "beat em up strictly on a 2d plane" because it plays like something, you gotta take your time with, learn patterns, be cautious, have quick reflexes. I mean its one of those games where touching the enemy hurts you, so fighting the enemies is closer to castlevania than to Final Fight. I'm just saying, there is really more to the gameplay, if you wanna advance, than "beat the crap out of everything". You really gotta pick well when to punch and when not.

Play the 360 version. Crazy as hell, more than just a beat them up, an arena mode, and you can save it. Plus ripping enemies in half and tearing their heads off is great.

First heard about this series from Derek Alexander (Happy Video Game Nerd/Stop Skeletons From Fighting) and Ben Hall (Video Game Take-Out) years back. Since then, I've gotten my own physical copy of Splatterhouse 2 and have unlocked the first and third games in the Splatterhouse remake. I haven't had the time to dive into the third game too much and I've never even touched Wanpaku Graffiti or however you spell that but the rest of the series (including the remake) are must own games for definite! My favorite is SH2 and I make sure to make it one of the three games I play through every Halloween. For anyone interested in playing these classics, I strongly suggest buying the Xbox 360 and PS3 remake. You have to unlock the classic games as you go along but the remake is also a blast to play (save for those awful load times) and it's a hell of a lot cheaper than paying $40+ for each individual cartridge.

My introduction to the series was actually through the remake. It's a fun game and pretty over the top with the gore and the humor. As others have pointed out it does have it's flaws and could be a little glitchy sometimes but it was great fun. I've played the originals some but need to give them more attention soon! Great video!

I played the last 2 from memory on Mega Drive or Genesis as it's called in other places. Very fun game, the visuals and overall style of the game is distracting enough to not worry too much about 'substance', too busy splattering shit to care.

2 is my personal favorite, despite the difficulty, but I like all of the games in the series (including the two you didn't mention, Wanpaku Graffiti and the 2010 remake). The time limit in 3 is a bit too frustrating for it to be truly great, though.

Splatterhouse was one of the first Sega games I played, and man did it disturb me in my youth. Not really so much the monsters or gore, but the story and it's presentation... yes, for a simple Sega game. 2 was the main game I remember (I played all 4 later), and in that chapter Jennifer was a trapped soul constantly saying "help me" and screaming in a digitized voice while getting grabbed and dragged through demonic portals... whole thing was fugged. 😁👍

I love the entire series. I own the remake for the Xbox 360 and I enjoyed it. I felt like instead of trying to change the series, they embraced it. I couldn't believe it when they had a finishing move where you pull the spine out of a monster's asshole. It's unfortunate that the remake ended on a cliff hanger and they haven't made another.

It's amazing how well the mood and atmosphere of the Splatterhouse games hold up. I'm a big horror fan, but I find most horror impossible to take seriously. It just lacks that kind of impact... the kind that the Splatterhouse games have. There's something about the foggy, decaying, slime and organ drenched environments... the deformed monsters that are all tumors and fangs... and a mask that's simultaneously untrustworthy, evil, and your only guide through this hellscape to save a loved one who is probably going to end up possessed, tortured, and mutilated anyway. It's just such a profoundly nihilistic game. It doesn't let up. That design direction just pervades every aspect of the game in a way that you rarely see anywhere else.

I'm not too big a fan of the 3rd game...2nd game is hard but I believe the 3rd one pushes it too far. However the 2010 Splatterhouse game is worth it, it has its problems but the core of the game is fantastic. It also has all 3 original Splatterhouse games as unlockables
@yostoyou
@yostoyou 6 лет назад
RosySquiggle Yeah, you should absolutely not write off the "reboot" despite the negative reception. As mentioned in this video, don't expect anything amazing gameplay-wise, but it is really enjoyable as a god of war like game. However having played through the game I gotta caution that there are some parts that are insanely frustrating. Luckily the presentation and story is super entertaining so it is worth getting through some of the shitty parts. But even if you don't enjoy the main game you still get all of the previous games (the first game is the better arcade version and not the gimped tg16 version).

Aside from the Evil Dead movies (especially Evil Dead 2), the original Splatterhouse trilogy also draws inspirado from 'House' from 1986, possibly also 'House' from 1977 (aka 'Hausu'), definitely 'The Deadly Spawn', possibly also 'The Kindred', and lots of others. It wears its inspirado on its sleeve just like the original Flashback. 2:51 Probably inspired by Ash *APPEARING* to return to the cabin in Evil Dead 2. Of course, anyone who's not a complete idiot can see that Evil Dead is *NOT* a remake of 'The Evil Dead'. Ash didn't "return" to the cabin. Sam Raimi and company just had to cobble together a quick prologue because they couldn't get the rights to their own movie. 3:37 Here's something I've never understood about video game logic. If your character is wielding a melee weapon, then why should they bother to kick? Standing or crouching doesn't matter. If you've got a melee weapon, then that's what you use. Maybe if your enemy is close enough to you to grapple your weapon in an attempt to take it from you, then you could kick them or plant your foot in their torso and try to push them away. But that's not applicable to games from this era. Or maybe it is. I don't know. Just because I never played a beat-em-up that was that complex doesn't mean at least one didn't exist. It wouldn't be too farfetched either. After all, plenty of beat-em-ups have enemies that can latch onto you and slow you down until you shake them off. In the NES version of Trojan, your character had a functional shield that you could actively use to block attacks. He could even lose his sword and shield, and scrounge up new ones, resorting to martial arts while disarmed. 4:57 I've always hated time limits! Time limits are for speedrunners. Some of us prefer to take our time to enjoy freeform exploration.
