The best fictional villains in history are given understandable motivations, so that we almost sympathize with their causes... before our moral outrage kicks in. Thanos, the Marvel big bad from Infinity War and Endgame, falls into that category, as a dogmatic ecoterrorist trying to "save" the universe by killing half of it, an extremist view that some devil's advocates have debated as, at the very least, well intentioned. Similarly, villains like Heath Ledger's Joker in The Dark Knight and Killmonger in Black Panther have been reexamined over the years as populists speaking for the forgotten and the oppressed. In this episode of #BigQuestion, Erik Voss and special guest Joven explore which supervillains are the most noble in their causes. Which of the movie supervillains that we've seen actually made the best arguments -- and in which ways are they all, proven by the broader message of their stories, flawed in their missions? I dont expect you to make a video about this or shout it out, but this is an endgame detail. So when smart hulk snapped his fingers he was yelling and in a lot of pain and thor was saying to take it off but, captain america said no, "are you ok" and I think that this is a reference to in the first avenger when he was in the machine for the super soldier serum and he was yelling in pain and everyone wanted to get him out but he said "no I'm ok". If this is true then it is a really cool detail.

@@distantignition he was pissed that humans were treating mutants poorly, and experimenting on them. That’s one reason he wanted to kill Trask. He didn’t think mutants were better than normal people, or superior like Apocalypse, but he though mutants should band together to get away/ get back at normal people.

Well you can’t create matter nor destroy it, that’s why Thanos “Used the stones to destroy the stones” but he didn’t destroy them. He “reduced them to atoms” so for those saying “he should have doubled the resources instead of doing what he did” well that wouldn’t have worked.

I really love this video, i was surprised you guys didnt mention Jigsaw from the Saw series, i think he'd be a good fit for the video because his motive is very just, same with the Jigsaw from Saw 8 and Saw 9 (even though the killer from Saw 9 wasnt out by the time this video came out), im not sure wether he would be right or wrong, since he doesnt kill, he sorta teaches a lesson to the crooked so they dont make the same mistake that caused his cancer and eventual death, but its still a very interesting topic to go over!

My problem with Thanos' plan was that not only was it a temporary measure, it also was stupid. If you wipe out half of all living things, you wipe out half of all the living resources, too. You haven't solved the food problem, because you just killed half the food supply.

Take lives to save lives is essentially just the trolley problem in which your inaction only results in the death of more people. In this case I kind of think it is morally better to take the route which optimizes the number of lives saved.

the trolley dilemma doesnt entirely fit with the thanos argument in particular. in the trolley dilemma, one group is going to die regardless of action or inaction. steve intended to save everyone by stopping the trolley before it had a chance to hit anyone.

@@endless_del yes but thanos's argument is that all life will eventually wipe itself out without correction and so this inaction is the larger sacrifice. As such the avengers could technically be seen as complacent in the greater act of evil as not only did they not act but they actively fought to sacrifice the greater number of lives.

I would agree that Thanos was fair in his selection except for one detail: His army is untouched. If it was truly random, everyone including his army and family and even himself, should've potentially been dusted. But he excluded himself and his posse. Also, he planned a retirement after it was over, so he knew he wasn't gonna die but he shouldn't have known if he would or not. So it wasn't 'fair' because he DID have priorities of who NOT to kill.

Also if everyone had unlimited resources, it might ruin society as any thing would be free unless someone takes it all and then they could raise prices. Then the government could change it but then theybwouldnt have control if there business. So I guess having less children would be better. But that would take freedoms away and things aren't going to be balanced anyway.

My main problem with people is that when they compare between Marvel and DC , they just compare the movie side , i.e , only the MCU vs DCEU and not the other awesome movies of DC that came before the MCU . Marvel also made many bad movies in the past but no one talks about them . But people talk about the bad DC movies . Why??? People should see all the sections before comparing . DC is way ahead of Marvel in the TV side , animation side and arguably the comics side is also little bit on DC's side. People think Thanos is the greatest villain . Lets wait till Darkseid comes.
