When Min.of state for International Trade said she’d secured “Billions in trade deals” by circumventing US Congress and dealing with individual U.S. States - Conveniently -this was at the time she had thrown her hat in the ring to be PM. If I was feeling generous ,had a lifetime of eating lead paint and liked her..I’d say she was being “economical with the actualité” but I’m not. The only body that can make US trade deals is the US Congress and all she’d done was procure MOA’s I.e Memoranda of Understanding- they’re not legally binding .So basically she’s a deceitful liar ,something of a leitmotif with this govt

All of them hopefully. Unfortunately many of us live in parts of the UK where a sizeable number of people will vote conservative in order to avoid having a Labour government. So-called ‘tactical’ voting is proof democracy is failing, ‘first past the post’, without proportional voting, has been shown for decades now to be a failure democratically. As so many talent shows and TV programmes have shown being the most popular is rarely any indication of being the best. Democracy and meritocracy need to work together.

Labour has never won a seat in Somerset. The progressive urbanisation of the Bristol area has spread north and eastward to include places like Bradley Stoke, Yate and Mangotsfield. To the south it has not spread beyond Whitchurch because Dundry Hill is in the way. I am not sure of the northern boundary of Mogg's current seat but I guess the sudden transition from city to rural county at Whitchurch has helped him so far. However I believe his new seat extends north-eastwards and includes the former mining towns of Midsomer Norton and Radstock and possibly even Peasedown. Mogg will not find that many supporters there and I think the Liberal Democrats, rather than Labour, have a real chance of winning the seat. Mogg is not popular in the area because he is rarely seen out and about in public and is seen as distant and remote, and I rarely hear anybody have a good word for him. If the Lib Dems win the by-election in Frome it could precipitate a domino effect and ensure that they go on to take North East Somerset and Wells at the General Election.

The constituency of Wansdyke, pre 2010, incorporated a significant part of the current NE Somerset, and was held by Labour’s Dan Norris from 1997 to 2010. Labour is still (just) in second place in Mogg’s patch. But I agree that the LibDems probably have the better chance of winning, because they are better placed to peel off reasonable Tories, and have amassed substantial local council strength. Mogg ought to be an easy enough target - just circulate photos of him lounging unconcerned on the HoC benches!

Some graphics would help to visualize where the different constituencies are. There was no mention of _safe_ seats where even an Orang Outang would win if nominated. Do they not exist anymore?

If we had sensible , non partisan opposition parties who would just act in the best interests of the country and stand down from seats where they had no chance. thats why we seem to nearly always have a Tory government, there's only one right wing party, but several centre left that always split the vote.
@thetragicyouth
@thetragicyouth 11 месяцев назад
I would say we have one hard right and two centre-right parties at present. There's nothing centre-left about Starmer's crew.

So long as a party can receive 38% of the popular vote and that delivers a sizeable majority in Parliament, there'll never be true democracy or any kind of consensus politics. We need to replace FPTP with proportional representation. FPTP has and will always ensure that the Tories form the majority of governments. It guarantees they can undermine any radical policies put in place whilst the Tories are out of office. If Labour builds social housing to tackle homelessness, the Tories will just sell it off after the next election.

Great, but that’s any opposition to the tories split 3 ways now that the Greens get 5-8% in the polls. For gods sake, the first priority is to get rid of this horrible terrible government. This is how they squeak through again.

@ColinBarrett001 11 месяцев назад
It's a good point. We don't so much have a genuine opposition as three or four anti-Tory parties, Labour, Libdem, SNP and Green, between which the anti-Tory vote is split. So vote tactically people. Vote for whoever has the best chance of ousting your Tory MP.

All of them - in an ideal world! But seeing as it's not, at least 50% of them should lose their seat. The Tories are due a real drubbing. It's been more than a quarter of a century since their last one. Every political party needs a big crash every 30 years or so. That's what democracy is all about.

It is a bit odd to throw Penny Mordaunt in with ERG crowd of Johnson, Mogg, Truss etc. Mordaunt was made a minisiter by May and then removed by Johnson, while a brexiteer Mordaunt has always been outside the ERG crowd and distanced herself from them. In the Tory election she stood as the alternative to those ERG candidates. This seems to brand her as one of them. Portsmouth always was a Labour stroghold and she worked hard to win the seat. She is liked in the city. When (rather than if) the Rishi bubble bursts and all the Tories high on the drug of Johnson's majority come down to earth, Mordaunt is the only one they have who would be able to re-brand the party.

Guys, Guys the Tories won't lose 150-200 seats - come back down to earth. Remember the Thatcher era when people were too embarrassed to say they supported her and look what happened.I hope I'm wrong but those chickens haven't yet hatched.

AFTER the Liar BoJo the Clown and people are forgetting about Jeremy Corbyn. If Labour KICKS OUT Corbynites and Starmer then seats will return and a NEW Lib-Lab Pact will be a possibility. NOT a Good Possibility, but it will help UK sink as fast as the Conservatives are making the country go. ONLY Good news is the Scottish Necrosis Party will be SMALL and NO Scottish Greens thanks to Lorna Slater and her lies.

@@arandmorgan As an anyone but the Tories voter, I'm stuck in a strong Conservative seat, so my vote will be meaningless again. I do though have a grudging respect for Tom Tugendhat, partly because he does respond to emails, gets involved in local issues and seems to have a genuine affection for non-English culture and language. I think he is studying Arabic and getting feedback from constituents on face book. I'll never vote for him, but perhaps along with Rory Stewart, he's not so bad ( as long as I don't check his voting record ).
