Its a defined emotional experience. I think the camera is less clinical feeling than most camera systems. Ive recently purchased the New Limited Edition model with the 55 lense. Im waiting for Adorama to get them in stock then i will get mine sent. Im 61 and -had many different cameras in my day. The Hasselblad has always eluded my budget....but not this time. Im like a kid in a candy shop waiting for Christmas to arrive. I too will be printing my images on my Epson printer. Living in cyberspace is no place to leave your beautiful works. Great video with intelligence and feeling.
A good introduction to the Hasselblad X2D Oli. Thank you! I am not its target audience. I shoot on a Nikon Nikomat film camera and the Hasselblad 503cx (again, film). All I want next is a fast action type camera, with a long lens to shoot Eider Ducks and Puffins. Perhaps, that Nikon Z9, with the Nikkor 400mm f/2.8 TC lens. Of course, I have to be cautious, as I don't want the G.A.S to get me. Muahahahahaha! Commenting to boost the Al(Gore)Rhythm.
GAS.... I tell you, the number of decisions I've made because of it. If you could bottle an antidote... I'd have a stock of it in the fridge. I've shot Nikon before and have Nikon glass but all of it film... never digital. What makes you go for the Nikon instead say Sony or Canon?
@@oliscurra I had a bad experience with Sony Japan. I won't be buying any of their products. That said, they make soooo many components, it'll be hard to completely cross them off my list (sensors for example). I've looked into the canon lenses and don't like them, and they are more expensive, compared to the Nikon equivalent, on average.
Mate, you're probably not wrong. In fact, I would say you could replace "X2D owners" with "Camera owners", increase the % from 90% to 97% and safely put your camera, car & chequing account up grabs with almost zero risk. What lenses are you sporting on the X1D and is it your main camera?
@@oliscurra I have the 45p and 28p currently, and I'm going to pick up the 90 f3.2 which will do me for both portrait and landscape soon. This is my main camera for personal work, travel and printmaking. I do have a full frame and telephoto lens for paid work shooting portraits, headshots and events, but those images end up on websites.
Both. If it’s up to A3 size I print myself. But if it’s larger or I want a different medium to gloss or matte archival (generally also large) then I outsource. You?
@@oliscurra I do print smaller stuff but not the bigger ones because I have not much space to display at home. Although, the biggest I’ve printed is 1.0x0.8 meters encased in acrylic.
I hear you. I have a similar problem. So I have quite a few prints which are sitting around and what I do is I swap them out every few months or weeks or so. It’s nice though to see your printed work on a wall.
Definitely for me. If you can fall in love with a camera and marry it, that would be my soul mate. Beautifully executed video. And your voice is amazing.
I own the X2D and it is a slow me down camera which I have completely feel in love with. Just holding it sends shivers down my spine. Great review and some awesome photographs Oliver.
Thank you so much for this profound review of this outstanding camera! The most conclusive and appealing video I found on the internet, chapeau, well done! Yes, I think I am the type of photographer able to appreciate the qualities of the Hasselblad, and to take images which justify the high investment. It will reward me with an almost spiritual user experience: Landscapes, forests, trees, plants, flowers, still life, cats, portraits, farm houses etc. However for the near future I see no opportunity to finance it together with 2-3 lenses. So I am continuing shooting with my very versatile Canon R6 MkII, which for it's price point is an excellent camera too delivering close-to-nature colors as well.
I'm considering selling my Leica M11 system and moving to this. It's bigger and less subtle than the M11 but the colours from the X2D and the detail are on another planet compared to the Leica. I had the GFX 100 for a while and loved the colour but it was a bit much. The X2D is lighter and generally more modern.
I have the X1D and love it and not sure what benefits the X1DII would bring. Would I leap over to an X2D - probably not - it's the same size sensor with more and hence smaller pixels on it - not necessarily a good thing, However, the main factor is the lack of continuous focus - for location even studio work models/dancers do move and so you're reliant on zone focussing. Continuous focussing has been around for decades on digital cameras it's a surprising absence on these cameras.
I own the Hx2d since it get on the market and was using the x1d2 also. Since i got my Leica M11P with 3 of the best Leica lenses. I dont use my Hasselblad anymore. I can print very large size with 60 MP files as good as the 100mp including 16 bits colours.
That's fantastic mate. Truth be told I was very happy printing up to A3 with a 12MP crop sensor camera back in 2006. Most of my printed work comes from my M10-P, SL2-S and my former GFX-50r. The one thing I've always noticed about the larger sensor, through the board is the bigger the sensor the clearer the details in prints A3 and above. And it must be said... you're not printing photos shot on a potato. Leica glass on a Leica sensor... that's the king class. 👑 I think it's awesome you do prints. 👍🏽 It's done too little nowadays. What size do you tend to print at generally? Cheers!
talk a lot of sense and yes do intend to hire first on such an expensive purchase, as well as I take photographs sometime in low light with fast glass (on FF iso 4000 f2) so it definitely is can the X2D cope with this environment
Your style is unique compared to others and calming. I enjoy watching your content. Hope to see you grow, you deserve it! By the way may i ask what do you think when hasselblad is going to release the x3d?
@@Keyboardwarrior42 Thank you mate. I appreciate it. I think it will be a while. I suppose the X2D II would be sometime in 2025 and an X3D maybe 2 to 3 years after that... if we base it on the release cycle of the x1d, x1dii & the x2d.
I am in the same decision process, right now almost decided, it is a SL3 given number of Leica L and M mount lenses and style photography that I like to do.
@user-jo8kc9lz7s - I haven't had a chance to try it yet. I will though in the next few weeks. What is your current camera and what do you want from your new one?
@@janfrosty3392 I feel like going with an X2D you are not doing yourself a favour if you don't buy in to their lens system. If you are really about adapting your m lenses... then an SL3 or even a Fuji GFX will serve you better. In two weeks I am dropping a video on adapting lenses to the X2D. Might be worth a watch for you.
@@oliscurra My current camera is SL2-S, I will be keeping it, what I want from SL3 is a higher mp rate to allow me more cropping at times. Having said that photography is a pastime interest, mainly nature, landscape and travel. Love your model photography Olivier.
@@janfrosty3392 Thanks mate. My favourite to photograph are human beings, but I also enjoy travel. I have to be honest... I'm not terribly moved by the SL3... but yes after handling the bigger sensor 100MP files of the X2D, the SL2-S files seem kinda small-ish so I can understand the benefit of a higher megapixel count. But the one thing I am most interested in about the SL3 (anti-purist alert 😉 ), is the articulating screen. Ever since I bought the Hasselblad 500 CM over a decade ago... it's my favourite way to shoot. If I had that on my SL2-S... I'd be pretty happy actually.
That was really enjoyable. One other suggestion - an X1Dii offers an awful lot of what you mention as X2D highlights. And these days you can pick them up secondhand for an almost affordable price…
YOu absolutely are. You have quite a bit of vignetting. Wide open it's okay-ish with some compromise but in stopping down you have hard vignetting. I speak about it here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LgfN5rHS_Rk.html
Oli. you covered all category of what type of photographer I am. You articulated every topic so well that I want to go out and purchase one this very minute (of course I can't afford it) but I am working towards it. I am an artist, Jewelry designer and a photographer. It was like you are talking to me directly. I would love to shoot jewelry & gemstones to test the camera and the lenses further to check its limit. Fantastik job! Very impressed.
Thank you for the kind words Shrikanth. I appreciate it. If one can afford it with two good focal lengths it’s a lovely camera. Of course it doesn’t replace skill, but it sure does reward it.
Hass - Colours as you see them Fuji - Any colour but as you see them Leica - Any colour so long as it is Black And White Canon - I dunno, we'll make it warm, then warm it up Sony - Yeah I agree make it warm, no warmer than that Nikon - Cold man, like dead cold ,so cold you will die from hypothermia All the others What is colour'. What is Black and white? What is a camera? Who is buying this stuff?
I shoot with a Canon 1d Mark IV. Yeah, it's old, but current finances don't allow for an upgrade. I will say that I still love shooting with it. I submitted a 36x48 inch print to a show and.... wow.
@The_Jen_Reilly Hey Jen, that’s a kick ass camera and like most digital cameras from the past decade and change enough to last for a while. I think the biggest difference in image making between now and then is the ease of making the image as opposed to the quality of it (in most cases). I’d love to see some of your photography. Do you have it online anywhere? Cheers, Oli
EVFs for large sensors aren’t fit for purpose. An optical viewfinder would eliminate that EVF lag nonsense that some confuse with a ‘purposeful shooting approach,’ which could be avoided by keeping the optical one.
I found out I was a dynamic range buff when I started shooting with the A7R V and it let me get photos I had only dreamt of before. Getting even more DR and better color is what tempts me about the X2D (besides the beautiful build and feel), but since there are things I can do with my A7R V I *can't* do with the X2D, it wouldn't be an upgrade, but a goal for a day I can drop money on a second system.
haha, now i have a name ''Im a Sharpness colour Peeper'' ,x2d100 . love my 21 65, 80 and 90 , get exiting of it .its magic every time ......especially that 80.regards.
I have owned Nikon cameras for many decades. I currently have a D800, D810, three D850s, and a lot of Zeiss and Nikon 'gold ring' lenses. I use these Nikons for more fast pace photography. However, when I really want to elevate my enjoyment and feel more connected with the photography experience, I grab my Hasselblad camera and lenses, my RRS tripod, slow down, use manual mode, become more methodical and intention, and carefully composed each shot. For me, this results in a greater connection to, and pride in, the gorgeous final Hasselblad images.
Great review and insights!!! I personally own x1dii and noticed that the images from this system look very “low strung” or relaxed compared to smaller formats that cram megapixels into their sensors. There’s just so much more nuance and ease in hassle tonal range world.
Thanks!!! You have hit my nail on it head. And knowing what I’m striving for in my photography and in my images. Is how I will always make my choices in cameras. Comparing one camera vs another does not really work for me. It sometimes confuses the my decision. But knowing myself and my needs as you have stated them here. Get me to see clearly what is my right way to go.
Well..there is a lot of people this camera is not suited for. Me, on the other hand, it is. Looking for the best quality images out there, and just looking at the cameras esthetiques..oh man..Just bought into Sony again but this Hasselblad is probably the kind of camera I want to retire myself with. Just for the joy, the passion of photography, how it makes you feel and the way of life.
Funny you say that actually... it's definitely not a selfie camera but... it was the easiest camera I've had to make a self portrait with because the app simply works.
@@oliscurra sorry to be so brief: the review is both thorough and detailed, but also down to earth with a human touch. Not an easy balance to maintain but you’ve done it well. Not often seen!
@@oliscurra mate, u know i been shooting M my whole life, if there’s anything that makes my head turn, it is the x2d, still keeping my M but it’s for nostalgic purposes, and used my 500 series film even more alongside the x2d… i got the cfv100c too now.. im just amazed and makes life easier, cant say enough… im holding a 90 legacy 3.2 and see if i can at least replace my noctilux, may b pushing my luck, but love this system every bit of it
@@riswanc Yeah mate. I am enjoying the X2D as well... but I am not sure I could ever fully replace my Leica system. There are some aspects which are irreplaceable for me. Sometimes I am not sure if I should have gone for the cfv 100c instead of the X2D to be honest.
@@oliscurra dont think can replace, sure im keeping my M films, but not so sure with the digital anymore.. x2D is the way, it’s a workhorse, and the ibis is a surreal! 907 just because i shoot sparingly with 500 series, and small size fits me to take on street, this how i might replace the M digital… but one to each own, i hope you will make additional x2d video, really love ur share mate!
@webersteve1547 3:2 is definitely my favourite but I owned the GFX - 50 R for a long time so I’m relatively used to 4:3. For me the most limiting thing about the Camera is the inability to have the image preview in black-and-white.
