In this video, I talk about a new way I am testing the suction on vacuum cleaners. It's called an unsealed suction test, or a "usable suction" test, and I put about 46 of my vacuums and cordless vacuums through it.

Cancelled cable back in 2008. There was times that I kinda wanted it back. But when you pay $100 a month and only watch 10 of those 140 channels...it's frustrating. If they could give me just that channel tier we watched, that would be different. I've heard half the price of cable is to provide sports channels, which my family never watches.

This is great, thank you. I’m done with Shark. We’ve just had our third one die in under two years. Our previous model, the Apex, had the head die inexplicably one day, and we replaced it with the Vertex. We’ve had the Vertex for about three months now. We use our vacuum almost every day, granted, but this has gotten ridiculous. Gonna go with a Dyson V11 Outsize. This video really helped me make up my mind.

Maybe you should add a cost per point into the equation, since Lupe is massively more expensive.
@Xarosai
@Xarosai 3 года назад
The Lupe would still crush all the competition if you make them comparable in usefulness (so debris holes not closed on Dyson and Sanitaire Tradition not dropped so low that it can't pick up bigger debris). That leaves the LG CordZero A9 Soft in 2nd position with less than half the useful suction and only about 25% cheaper... Stats don't lie! :P
@OnyxCat681
@OnyxCat681 2 года назад
It is not massively expensive for example is the same price with Dyson top cordless vacuum, even Dyson newer models are more expensive, we have looked for a new vacuum cleaner for some time now and find that Lupe has all that the other cordless have combined in one vacuum cleaner and in addition (you might think design does not matter) upright design is better. Doesn't put to much weight on your hand, better to reach difficult to reach pleases. We all ready try it in action as our friends have it and is amazing, it blows Dyson away. I hope that's helps.
@nissan_skyline
@nissan_skyline Год назад
It's actually not. The most expensive cordless vacuum model from Dyson is $970, the cheapest model is $400 and the average price is $600, which is equivalent to the cost of a Lupe. Since the Lupe is much more powerful than all of Dyson's cordless models, $600 is a pretty good deal, especially when you take into consideration the battery life, dual cleaning head, size of the debris canister, and the fact that you can purchase replacement parts individually as opposed to buying a brand new unit since it's design for longevity. Traditional cordless vacuums are not that great, especially the non-premium models from major brands that you can find in regular department stores. In my opinion, it's kind of pointless to get a cordless vacuum unless you purchase a premium model that's at least $300+.

Had the Lupe vacuum for a little over a month now (was sold on it from a previous video on this channel). The suction is very strong on normal mode and creates a noticeable amount of resistance when you try to push along on carpet. Build quality is amazing and the front "soft" roller is amazing at pulling in larger debris. Customer service is excellent as well. I had some weird issues with my battery and they sent me out a new one free of charge.

I wonder where the best tradeoff between suction and airflow is? After all, suction is inverse to how much air you're actually moving and you do need air moving through your vacuum or heavy particles like sand just won't get lifted up the hose and there's even a chance the motor might overheat.

This is why I love this channel, good testing like this. 1 thing to note too with this test is I think the size of the cleaner head will effect the results. For example the Sharks with Duo Cleans would be worse because they have a bigger head area. Its basically a bigger area to maintain suction in.
@VacuumWars
@VacuumWars 3 года назад
I didn't really notice that being a concern. It is true that the suction was much weaker the further from the place in the head where the hose was, but as long as you were on the hose it didn't matter. Many Dyson cordless heads are smaller than the LUPE for example.

Good job, some of the best performing vacuums on the deep clean test come up short. The Sanitaire traditional is the outlier but it has some advantages of simplicity and consistency by not having complications like wiper seals, flow passages, or variable area flow passages. To explain really what is going on, it appears the more than vacuum depression of atmospheric pressure is not likely that important to performance, in fact has very little to do with it by itself. It appears total airflow over and through the fibers of the carpet makes a larger difference. But vibration and agitation of the carpet fibers would likely be important, too. The challenge is to know whether flow over is more important than flow through the fibers. And, let's not forget maintaining a enough flow velocity after the cleaning chamber through the hoses to transport the dirt to the dirtbag or dirt chamber. Importantly, this test should be on a carpeted surface, possibly with replacement types of carpets to really get an idea. Probably to get a baseline the Sanitaire, besides being inexpensive, has some advantages in baselining the effect. In a beater bar vacuum like the Sanitaire one can remove the brushes strip(s) or get a bar without beaters and only brushes: this would give an idea as to the effect of vacuum vs. agitation at lifting dirt (or test media like sand or dust), and whether agitation by combing effect or by vibration effect things more. I think they use on the composite plastic bars a beater strip which might work in the metal bar instead of the brushes for beater only action. Further the Sanitaire having no holes, gaps or flexible partitions to airflow where it contacts the work surface probably gives the best baseline for these tests, by eliminating such complications for now, besides it is the only one with multiple beater heads available; brushes, brushes and beaters, or removing brushes and having only beaters. I suppose adapting a secondary vacuum in place of the bag inlet would allow adjustment of airflow and vacuum for a given height setting: either using a variac variable transformer to adjust speed or a leak orifice or an inline orifice to adjust vacuum depression and flow. My thoughts: Likely this stationary fixed oriface has little value to actual cleaning performance. But a pitot tube extending to the brush cleaning chamber area with a manometer mounted on the vacuum would have more value... actually this could be connected to a computer to give a read out as you vacuumed the test carpet. Likely: First, vacuum depression alone over the carpet would have little differential effect on effectivity of cleaning. Second, agitation would have less effect than vibrations on effectivity of cleaning. Third, increased airflow would have higher power consumption with less effectivity of cleaning; increased vacuum depression would have less power consumption but less effectivity of cleaning; agitation for a given air flow and vacuum depression would not be as efficient as vibration for having the least power consumption for a given effectivity of cleaning - at a similar airflow and vacuum depression.

I one hundred percent agree. I have two sharks right now. Both duo clean. My only issue with them is that I’ve had to replace the plastic cover over the drive side of the front roller several times. Being a K9 handler and vacuuming all kinds of rooms has definitely revealed the weaknesses of the vacuums I use. I just suck it up and keep buying parts when I need them because the duo clean heads clean my kennels better than any other.

Got the Shark Vertex Zero M a couple weeks ago after sending back my Dyson V11 Animal and deciding stick vacuums aren’t worth it for my mostly-carpet 3000sqft house. Very very pleased with it. It’s heavier, but I also feel like they substantially improved the quality of their vacuums in the last several years. It’s leaps better than my parents’ new-ish Navigator they bought in 2017, after I recommended it because I liked my Navigator from probably 2009-2011 (hand-me-down from a relative so I’m not entirely sure of it’s age). It truly does not struggle with hair. My son ripping elastic out of his socks to use as makeshift spiderwebs for his Spider-Man action figures to swing on, however, are another story 🤣 those wrapped around the front brush head so badly I had to use a pointy knife to dig them out. But it only took a few minutes and I loved that I could pop that front roller out of the head to clean just the roller and not have the entire vacuum head in my lap, so I still love this thing very much. Thanks for nerding out to help people make informed decisions on expensive appliances.

Vacuum science man, this is good stuff! Suction is only one part of the equation though I would argue airflow is even MORE important when it comes to carpet deep cleaning performance that’s why direct air machines like Kirby and Riccar tout their deep cleaning ability, it’s a factor of finding the right balance of airflow, suction, and agitation. Too much of one thing is bad, too much suction and it just sucks itself to the floor impossible to push, too much agitation and you shred your carpet to bits. Proper design engineering is crucial for the best efficiency as you’ve already proven in cordless stick vacs.

I have a Bagged Hoover Wind Tunnel for over a decade now. I use it twice a month and could ask no more from it. They advertised it's loudness as a good thing for reasons of efficiency and cost. They advise to put on some headphones or ear pods and enjoy the best suction and they were right. I've had both deep carpet and now I have a very expensive hotel low cut but dense carpet that was one giant remnant from the Intercontinal Hotel when it went up a few years ago. People comment on it all the time. It inspired me to upgrade my kitchen. Back to my H. vac. Since my vac rides on top the carpet I keep it on it's lowest setting. It uses some kind of baffling that ensures equal airflow across the length of the brush instead of all of it going through the middle like my earlier Dirt Devil did. I was told that keep it at 100% efficiency I would have to change the bag when it's 1/3rd full. Last week, I asked myself, when did I look at that bag last. It had to be at least a year. So I opened it and it was about 80% full. Wow I thought to myself because it was working so well. Though it did seem to be warmer as did the power cord. However, I got my vac for $75 when Sears was going belly up and I would bet all my lucky stars that even the best vacuums out there could only be about 10 to 15% better than my Hoover. But senior Hoover cost 85% less than some of those other vacs.

Would you be able to add a suction/flow/ overall performance test on these vacuums, after they have picked up a measured amount of dirt/dust to see how quickly, and to what extent their performance degrades as the bags fill and thus clog the "filtering" of the bags, which decreases flow. Or in the case of bagless, as the filters begin to clog. I've noticed that my bagged vacuum's (pro team proforce 1500xp) performance degrades very quickly and significantly from when it has a fresh bag in it. (has a smaller bag) After vacuuming for 20 minutes, the pickup power is much less, almost to the point of not being able to pick up small pebbles on the carpet. I think this would be a nice factor to also consider when deciding on buying a vacuum. Thanks for the great reviews and your time!

The company, like many overseas companies, seems more reliant on retailers to provide info on their products...struggling to find anything on finding out what the differences are between them. Looks like K24 is an upgraded version of K17, but have no idea why.

That's unfortunate because the shark vertex is amazing and has so much suction that it's almost scary at times. This test is Hokie in my opinion... something real specific about it to make a Lupe amazing and everybody else not. I would disregard it if I was you and just get a Vertex, you will be very happy... send it back if you don't like it. I think the suction will stun you... If you don't like the vertex it won't be because it lacks suction. Go watch his vertex video again and then wonder why it would do so poorly on this very specific test after he said he loved how powerful it was in the review.... this video actually gave me bad vibes because I know how good the vertex is... something not right with this test.

@@snauspockets9924 the suction on Lupe is better than anything I’ve used and I used to have the old Henry corded vacuum that would lift up the carpet. I got it the same day that I had my house professionally cleaned and vacuumed after they had left, it managed to pick up very fine dust and the 1L bin was almost full.

Thanks for the video! I’m trying to do my own testing for my OCD. I clean the several bag less vacuums every couple months. There’s always a fine dust all through the cyclone area. I blow out the filters with an air compressor most times and then replace them once in a while. Love to be able to test a new machine versus one before I clean it versus after I clean it to see how much of a drop there was after a month or two. Any thoughts on all the fine dust that doesn’t get cycloned? And have you done anything to teach about actual testing or selves? What tools to use, etc. You show clips of testing airflow and you can use a lot of duct tape but it looks like :-) Unavoidable I guess

More important for ease of use sake..... The Lupe DOES NOT keep hair off the roller like the Vertex. Tangled hair is bar-none the hardest thing to clean off your vacuum.
@redcherry71
@redcherry71 3 года назад
True but in my experience- in our household - long haired wife, short haired husband, baby and Labrador I have no trouble with hair wrap. The only time the roller gets tangled and I have to untangle it is with one wool rug which sheds a lot and even the amount that’s shedding has reduced significantly as I guess the vacuum is grooming it. The wool fibres come off the brush really easily too.

@mattm2024
@mattm2024 3 года назад
As you note in the video, this new metric best measures the seal around the vacuum head. What still seems to be THE question of the hour is what metric of the ones we see really does the best at indicating cleaning power and I suspect the answer is "it depends". The act of cleaning a floor involves several things happening in concert with one another - air flow (both pressure AND volume), brushes "throwing" the debris into the airflow and some form of a seal to increase the speed of the airflow into which the debris is caught and ultimately vacuumed up. This is similar to things like a pressure washer or leaf blower where just having high speed or high pressure isn't enough to clean. You need volume of movement as well. It would be interesting to test the POST head air movement speed and volume of these devices to see how much movement is happening in the column of air that has debris in it...
@a111z
@a111z 3 года назад
Look at a video demonstration of a “working vacuum gauge”. That is probably the best instrument to predict cleaning ability. Basically it’s a Y shaped pipe, one end is attached to the vacuum hose, one end is attached to a vacuum gauge, the third end has a restricted orifice (I think most are 3/4 inch diameter) . Initially the orifice is sealed and the maximum sealed vacuum pressure is notated, then the orifice is unsealed, whatever vacuum pressure is maintained when the gauge is unsealed is notated. This second measurement is what’s referred to as “working vacuum”. A vacuum cleaner must have strong suction and strong airflow to maintain strong “working vacuum”. Even this can’t account for cleaner head and brush roll design and performance though.

First time on this channel, and all I can say is holy crap this guy vacuums 0:22 Btw, how about a vacuum head which normally remains sealed, but detects through a proximity sensor whether there's a buildup of debris (snowpiling) every few seconds, and briefly opens the seal to let it in.

After thinking for a while, I figure the biggest problem with adapting this test for robot vacuums is going to be figuring out how to convince a smart vacuum to roll over the same spot many times. A "dumb" bot can simply be told to run out its whole battery in a small pen, and you can come back later with confidence that the recorded max reading on your anemometer represents the best-case scenario since the vacuum will have gone back and forth many times from different angles. A "smart" robot vacuum only wants to do the same spot once or twice, so it could get tedious telling them to spot clean over and over again from slightly different starting points... Perhaps what you need for a repeatable test is to take advantage of the wall-following action that *all* robot vacuums employ, by using an adjustable rail to force them to go over that spot with different offsets (one run with the suction point 3in from the wall, next run with the suction point 3.25in from the wall, etc)?
