Honorable mention: I think she should’ve gotten a Best Supporting Actress nom for 101 Dalmatians. I rewatched it a few years ago when Cruella came out and Glenn’s performance was fantastic - multilayered and memorable
Dangerous Liaisons and Fatal Attraction are just riveting performances from Glenn Close. She definitely deserved a win for at least one of them, in my humble opinion.
she and annette benning, should be awarded at least one oscar... i still remember even on "cheesy movie" like air force one, the way glenn close acted to show the character's confidence to conquer her fear to the hijackers by delivering this one line "this is the vice president of united states of america" still haunts me until now
Dangerous Liasons is Close's towering performance because she is finally given material of such high calibre, we can see what she is fully capable of. And as the film ends, ---that final magnificent scene before the mirror, when the make up comes off and the Marquise sees who she really is, we are in awe at what an actress can do! What a travesty she didn't win Best Actress in the best film of that year, and many.
I think it might have been because Jodie Foster had a much "showier" role, even though I remember Close being the favorite that year (she's familiar with that position).
@@oscarman42 I don't dispute the quality of Foster's performance, and it is showier, true. If raw is vying with intelligent emotion, we know where the Academy usually goes. But Close is so much better, he screamed :)))
I'll Never understand. The Academy - largest percentage is actors. You'd think they, of All, would get that a subdued, non showy performance is worlds harder to pull off and keep the audience engaged than an over-the-top crazy performance. Some contrary to that: Cotillard En Rose, Burstyn A Dream, DDL Be Blood But to me, the best performance I've Ever witnessed is Hopkins in The Remains of the Day. Such a boring story and character; who cares what he does But through his performance, I Sure F***ing Do! THANKS
My Ranking: 1) Dangerous Liaisons 1988 2) Fatal Attraction 1987 3) The World according to Garp 1982 4) The Wife 2018 5) Albert Nobbs 2011 6) Hillbillies Elegy 2020 7) The Big Chill 1983 8) The Natural 1984
Love Glenn Close and love this video! I'm glad to see that Hillbilly Elegy is not at the bottom. She was very good in it and didn't deserve that horrendous Razzie nomination. I would've probably swapped Elegy with the Wife in terms of ranking. But, I agree with your order. Looking at this list, I would say she's had 4 good chances to win that Oscar. I really hope she wins a competitive Academy Award one day. 🙏
Fatal attraction is her best performance, with dangerous liaisons in second place, but i think if she wins an oscar in the future it will always seem as a consolation oscar, no matter how good she is because fatal attraction and dangerous liaisons were when she was at her very best, fatal attraction was her career best.
It's amazing that we are discussing her loss for that film, when we all remember that it was the one for which she would finally win her long-overdue Oscar! The shock remains.
My favorite performance of hers is in Dangerous Liasons. She certainty should have won! She could/should have won also for Fatal Attraction, The Wife & Garp. I suppose those are my top choices.
Something no-one really talks about is that, as fine as her performance in Dangerous Liaisons is, she's just not beautiful enough to play Mme de Merteuil so she's essentially miscast in that too. Her acting is good enough to make us overlook this. Fatal Attraction is - and will no doubt remain - her finest hour.
@@oscarman42Just looking at the list of actresses who were considered for FA, I thought to myself I could see Debra Winger making something of that role. She may have been great but she still wouldn't have been better than Close.
"FATAL ATTRACTION" is a freak-out, off the rails, SCARY performance in a misguided and misdirected film. But "DANGEROUS LIAISONS"... now that's a different kind of evil... subtle evil and manipulation... far more scary and more believable than "FATAL ATTRACTION." I think she deserved Oscars for both "FATAL" & "DANGEROUS".
Fatal Attraction definitely should have netted her her first Oscar. She was far superior to Cher. Dangerous Liaisons is perhaps her best work. That final scene in the mirror is always captivating to watch...not a word said, but it's all there in her face. I definitely believe she deserved it for The Wife as well. What a full 180 from the other two performances. I really wish Colman had been put in supporting instead of Stone.
I can't rank her performances. I think everything is PERFECT. Glenn Close is my third favorite actress ( 1-Meryl , 2- Bette Davis). The truth is, she should have won back to back 87/88. Academy has decided "to wait" a bit and now they don't know what to do. Where is the goddamn "Sunset Boulevard" ??? Gosh ! I think I am most desperate than her ... I WANT AN OSCAR TO HER !!!
I cannot believe that they have still not started production on that film! There is an Oscar with her name on it just waiting for the movie to be made!
I haven't seen Hillbilly Elegy yet, but my rankings for the rest: 1 Dangerous Liaisons 2 Fatal Attraction 3 The World According to Garp 4 Albert Nobbs 5 The Wife 6 The Big Chill 7 The Natural This incredibly talented actress should be on her second Oscar by now, but she's always had the misfortune of being an unstoppable object against an immovable force in the year she's been nominated. I think Dangerous Liaisons was her best work, and although you hit the nail on the head, Oscarman, in saying Close's performance was just a bit too subtle and nuanced for a good proportion of Academy members to fully appreciate, who could deny Jodie Foster the Oscar for The Accused? Also, although Cher was good in Moonstruck, I feel she probably received the Oscar instead of Close for Fatal Attraction as a consolation prize for being terribly overlooked by the Academy for her work on Mask, released just a few years before.
I would've been happy with Glenn winning back to back Oscar's for Fatal Attraction and Dangerous Liaisons - her two BEST. I didn't see Hillbilly Elegey so can't speak about that, but I would move Albert Nobbs up to 3 or 4th position with her Jennie Fields 3 or 4 (they are so great). I agree with her assessment on her nomination for The Natural and I would've nominated Mary Kay Place from The Big Chill and not Glenn.
At this point it would have been nice if she won for ANYTHING lol. Interesting to see how several acknowledged her in Albert Nobbs, as so few actually saw the film. Loved her in Garp and thought she should easily have won for that performance.
She is simply one of the best and i'm miffed she has no oscar but they are not the total bellweather of talent. If they'd have just handed it to her in 88 all would be ok as Jodie won in 1991 plus if Weaver had won in 88 for supporting then 3 of my faves would have well deserved oscars. I'd rank them like this 8 Hillbilly Elegy 7 The Natural 6 Albert Nobbs 5 The Big Chill 4 The World According to Garp 3 Fatal Attraction 2 The Wife 1 Dangerous Liasons Her best unnominated performance is Reversal of Fortune. Wonderul video.
Wow - the highest The Wife has ranked so far! "If only" indeed...in retrospect, we wouldn't be having this discussion had things gone differently years ago. Thanks for sharing your list!
My Rankings 1. The World According to Garp 2. Fatal Attraction 3. Dangerous Liaisons 4. The Wife 5. Albert Nobbs 6. Hillbilly Elegy 7. The Big Chill 8. The Natural
I think you know what my answer is, I’m sure, OM2. Hey, I don’t even know your name. 1. Fatal Attraction 2. Dangerous Liaisons 3. The Wife 4. Garp 5. Nobbs 6.Big Chill 7. The Natural 8. Hillbilly She absolutely deserved back to back Oscar’s for 1987 and 8, and id’ve given her the win for The Wife. She expressed more emotions with her eyes alone than most actresses do all around in a film.
Glenn Close is one our finest actors working today, she always delivers a memorable performance with the movie either being good or bad. I always loved her and her work, let’s hope that her performance in Sunset Boulevard will win her the Oscar 🏆💛
For whatever it is worth, I can remember Kevin Costner as the corpse in THE BIG CHILL better than I can remember Ms. Close's performance. I forgot that she was in that film In liked her in THE NATURAL. I am surprised that the members of the Academy remembered her performance especially playing opposite Robert Redford. I remember John Lithgow's performance in GARP better than Ms. Close's. She was good, but the movie was a bit of a bore. I don't think ALBERTNNOBBS, THE WIFE or HILLBILLY ELE, GY got much play in theaters. I haven't seen any of the three in the theater, but from what I have seen of the first two on television, she deserved an Oscar. There is not much more that I can add about her performances in FATAL ATTRACTION or DANGEROUS LIASONS that hasn't been already commented. Someone mentioned that she deserved a Best Supporting Actress nomination for 101 DALMATIONS. I don't know if I would go that far, but she did enter the pantheon of great Disney bad guys (and gals). People who haven't seen it, please watch on RU-vid Ms. Close presenting an honorary Oscar to Deborah Kerr. Just watch it, please. I will admit that I have mixed feelings about honorary Oscars, but it is one of Oscars' better moments
Hillbilly Elegy was released on Netflix, preceded by a two-week stint in a limited number of theatres. Ioved her performance in Garp more than the film itself. I think most of us agree - NO honorary Oscar for Ms. Close!
Thanks for this wonderful video - It was a fantastic summary (and tribute) to Glenn’s career at the Oscars. First and foremost, just getting 8 nominations is outstanding - Yes, winning, of course, would be nicer, but there’s hardly anybody else with such a high number of performances nominated which shows consistency, longevity, and range. I agreed with almost all of your rankings although the only difference for me might be moving The Wife a bit lower. Compared to her other nominated performances, it seems very average. I know many people consider her loss of that Oscar to Olivia Colman (in The Favorite) to be an upset. If you look at only their two performances side-by-side, though, Olivia’s performance stands out more (a lot more). I remember the other nominees that year and even Lady Gaga (in A Star Is Born) and Melissa McCarthy (in Can You Ever Forgive Me) were better in my eyes. If Glenn had won that year, my guess is it would end up being viewed as another case of a career Oscar. Looking back, I think Glenn deserved a 9th nomination - As unlikely as it would be to actually get nominated, I love, love her in 101 Dalmatians since she deliciously nailed it as the iconic Cruella De Vil!
An excellent set of points - first, most (including myself) are overlooking the achievement of 8 nominations and focusing on 8 losses. Second, you're absolutely right - had she won for The Wife, it would have been considered a consolation prize and "Career" Oscar, which we all disdain. That said, my friend, I still wish she had won! Thanks for the support.
@@oscarman42 Thanks for your excellent reply with the thoughtful feedback. A few extra points. First, I looked at the 8 winners for each of Glenn’s nominations (pasted below) - Some of them truly did seem worthy of winning (like Yuh-Jung Youn for Minari), but there were a few of them which felt highly questionable (especially Jessica Lange for Tootsie). Jessica Lange for Tootsie Linda Hunt for The Year Of Living Dangerously Peggy Ashcroft for A Passage To India Cher for Moonstruck Meryl Streep for The Iron Lady Jodie Foster for The Accused Olivia Colman for The Favorite Yuh-Jung Youn for Minari Second, in trying to relate the Oscars to sports, I view getting 8 nominations as finishing 8 times in the top 5 which is simply amazing. Third, at least the Emmys and the Tonys were smart enough to award Glenn - Plus, she has Golden Globes and SAG Awards. Fourth, while losing 8 times certainly is no fun, she could’ve commiserated with Peter O’Toole (another fine actor with 8 losses) and both might think about Meryl Streep who has lost a whopping 18 times (although yes, she has 3 wins). Glenn is a true chameleon, disappearing into such a wide variety of roles (similar to Meryl, Cate Blanchett, and Scarlett Johannsen). She should take much solace in knowing the many, many fans always rooting for her as shown by the terrific video you made all about her.
@@AliGhozati1216 Wow! Talk about looking at the glass half full. And that is brilliant relating that Streep lost 18 times, which does - at least on paper - look much worse lol. You are a true film and Oscar scholar!
I would say that Fatal Attraction is the most talked about "shoulda won something for that" when it comes to Glenn Close. Dangerous Liaisons being a close second. The third, The Wife, is third to me. It's hard to describe someone's best work, because if you have the discipline of Glenn Close, you always deliver a good performance even if the film isn't good. I think the film being good and lack of box office is why the Academy has yet to pick her for an Oscar. But the thing is, she's an artist. I don't think of her having any particular vanity project. In the 80s and 90s, she was often mistaken for Meryl Streep, "except at the Oscars" she'd say jokingly. I know she is in her 70s, and the film industry in the United States isn't exactly looking for roles for her she can play, but I think her artistic integrity speaks for itself in every performance. I do know that it's coming, and it won't be an Honorary Oscar. It will be a competitive one. I just pray that she isn't in the same category as Viola Davis the year she wins Best Actress. Though, maybe she can portray Geraldine Page in a film and win one that way? It's easy to see how those two careers parallel each other. Glenn is her own artist, but one can see the parallels to Geraldine Page and Deborah Kerr easily.
What a great idea - a film with her portraying Page. Oftentimes I watched The Devil Wears Prada and thought to myself, "Glenn Close could have nailed that role."
@@oscarman42 To be fair, when I saw The Devil Wears Prada, I was wondering why Meryl Streep was channeling Glenn Close in 102 Dalmations with her cadence. Sure, Miranda Priestly wasn't chasing and doing anything illegal for a puppy coat, but she was dog walking Andy. I also felt Meryl made Miranda too one note.
@@oscarman42 I also read that Glenn Close was almost cast but rejected it because of being typecasted. Understandable. I don't know if she was cast she would have gotten an Oscar nomination. But, yes, on the Page project. Hollywood screenwriters, do you work!
I'm not a big fan of her supporting nominations except for The World According to Garp . I would have probably given it to her for that. I think her best roles that she was nominated for along with Garp are Fatal Attraction and Dangerous Liasons but they are not always they types of roles that win for lead actress.
I though Glenn was terrific in The Wife. Masterful subtle acting... she conveyed a whole world of emotion with the most nuanced expressions and glances.
Totally agree that FA and DL are top 2, I just don't know which order. I think, unfortunately, that the stink of HE rubbed off onto Close. I haven't seen TBC since it was released, but I remember being more impressed by Close than anyone else in the cast.
The top 3 are the right choices! I might rank Dangerous Liaisons as #2 and Garp as #3 but they are all incredible - and Fatal Attraction is definitely the best performance. Honestly, I truly believe she should have WON 3 Oscars by now - for Fatal Attraction, Dangerous Liaisons, and World According to Garp. The fact that she has none is beyond absurd.
@@oscarman42 Yes - and Glenn not winning by now makes the Oscars seem a bit of a joke, no? But I'd take away some (at least for the roles for which they won)...Sandra Bullock...Gwyneth Paltrow...Rami Malek...Kim Basinger....Helen Hunt perhaps...Laura Dern...Grace Kelly (Judy deserved it that year)...Anne Hathaway (did not need an Oscar for Les Miz)...and Frances McDormand and her 3 Oscars feel excessive.
Glenn should've won for Fatal Attraction. Evey straight married man over 40 I know considers it to be scariest film ever. It did change how people think about one night stands.
Fatal Attraction definitely should've been her Oscar winning performance. Sadly she'll probably win for a Scent Of A Woman/Color Of Money type performance.
If I may make a suggestion. Instead of using comment title cards, pull up a microphone and speak what you’re writing. Stop the fade to black and just talk us through your transitions. SHOW the transitions. Example, when you state the other actresses who were considered for “Fatal Attraction”, SHOW THEM
Fatal attraction and dangerous liaisons Probably tie for me. If I had to choose I would like to say DL was her "best" while FA was her "most deserving." I really really really hate Cher won over Close, and its one that always peeves me to this day. I think both roles didn't win her more awards because they were "villian" type roles. I did just watch The Accused again, and while I think it was a "good" win and an important film and portrayal at the time, I definitely would've vote for Close. I would rank The Wife higher as well. While I can't fault Olivia Coleman's win, other her career and that role have always been insanely award deserving, I do wish Close had finally won for The Wife. I hate to think she will only get an honorary Oscar if she doesn't win soon...
While Glenn Close could have/should have won for several roles, in my opinion, her best performance was as "Albert Nobbs." But the film's subject matter did not have mass appeal and was not seen by many. It was Close's pet project. And she lost the Oscar to Streep in "The Iron Lady, which is understandable.
Wait a second ... Let me recap to whom she lost for "Albert Nobbs".... 😂😂😂😂 Holy fu_k !!! Mary Louise 😂😂😂😂 Okay ... Maybe a TIE ??? 😂😂😂 I was about to say that "She was robbed" 😂😂😂 and then ... HER !!!😂😂😂 But, I have to say that's why I think Academy has something personal against her; ANY OTHER ACTRESS would have won with that performance in "Albert Nobbs" !!! If it were Frances McDormand they would give her the Oscar during the filming !!!
Very true, my thoughts entirely. There is some bias towards Close in the Academy. She should certainly have won at least three Oscars already....for Dangerous Liaisons, The Good Wife and Albert Nobbs.
Im one of those people that doesnt like fatal attraction. I dont deny that Close gives one hell of a performance, but i dont like the film. On the other hand i do like Albert Nobbs and think she is great in it. My favorites of hers are dangerous liaisons and garp.
Having watched all of the films the actresses that were considered for the role I can say first and foremost none of them would’ve done the same way Glenn close did, sorry not sorry lol I noticed Meryl went through similar problems of not having sex appeal for certain roles even when directors would say she was pitch perfect for the role but karma is a bush bc both Glenn and Meryl end up such longevity and legendary status despite what those weirdo critics and directors/producers said
Thank you. The Razzies try to make a statement. Very few of the nominated actors are the ultimate worst for the year. Choosing and their interpretations of the roles are just mistakes. Both Amy Irving in Yentl and James Coco in Only When I Laughed were also Oscar and Razzie nominated for the same role.
One of the first-time I completely disagree with you. Hillbilly WAY LOWER, LOWEST. Dangerous her best BY FAR!!! They gave it to Foster for the pinball scene and that alone.
I think there may have been several factors that propelled Jodie Foster to the win. Of course, we'll never know how "close" the final vote tally was, but I think her Oscar was well-deserved. As for HE, not a good film by any means, but I thought Close was able to rise above it.
I know a lot of people hated that film (which had its share of problems). I was one of the few who actually thought she did a good job with what she was given.
ALL of The Big Chill was underwritten...what a boring movie we all loved when it came out...Boring white people spending the weekend drinking, eating, smoking and dancing...barf...Bring a book...Watching this, I must say, I still have no great opinion of Close...But sadly, she was probably best in Fatal Attraction...Although, she should have gotten it for Garp. The 80s were difficult..
@@oscarman42 Yes, I think her career would have been somewhat different had she won for that..I didn't mean to say I don't like Close, but when I see her in something, I think "that's Glenn Close!" She obviously talented and great and really, we're all thinking "Maxie" is her best film...
Good morning friends Dear Cher: Please return the 1987 Best Actress Award to its rightful owner, Ms. Glenn Close. Cher, you do deserve a Razzie for MOONSTRUCK
LOL - not sure about a Razzie, but I do agree that it is not an Oscar-worthy performance (as we all know, this was a make up award for not being nominated previously for Mask).
Her performance in fatal attraction is just chilling. And I love the movie overall, even though people nowadays just praise close’s performance while they bash the movie itself
The film was controversial at the time because of its themes, though the "revenge" aspect did resonate with some women. It's interesting because this remains Close's iconic performance to date.
I'm not a big fan of her supporting nominations except for The World According to Garp . I would have probably given it to her for that. I think her best roles that she was nominated for along with Garp are Fatal Attraction and Dangerous Liasons but they are not always they types of roles that win for lead actress.
@@oscarman42 . Of course, I am exagerating ( you know me); Foster is fantastic in the film and she's made MUCH MORE than scream, BUT ... not even CLOSE to CLOSE. Meryl Streep is also incredible in "The dingo stole my baby" (😂😂) but as well not even close to Glenn. But, I know your favorite was Melanie, wasn't she ? 😂😂😂😂
