Might be the most forgotten and under appreciated of the all-time top ten American horses. He was a great 2 yo, 3yo & 4yo. Probably the best 2 yo thru 4 yo of all-time. The only horse to win the triple crown and the Travers. Won 7 stakes races under 130+ including the Travers (SEC never won under more than 126). Won 4 stakes requiring less then 100% effort (SEC never won a stakes race at less then 100% effort). Whirlaway also won stakes races under 6 different jockeys.

Thank you for posting this. It's so nice (and hard to find) seeing the greats of long ago. ABC (?) research made a little mistake, in saying that Whirlaway's time stood until Secretariat broke it. Decidedly (1962) was actually the one to break Whirlaway's mark, running 2:00.4 in 1962. Two years later, Northern Dancer broke that record, running 2 minutes flat. Secretariat broke Northern Dancer's record. Whirlaway held the record for an impressive 21 years. Whirlaway is one of just 25 victors in the history of the KD to break 2:02 for ten furlongs, and he was just the second one after Twenty Grand (1931) to do so. The first three horses to break 2:02 were all tail male to Swynford.

Tom Yes, Whirly was quite a horse.....and quite beloved at Calument. He was a one run horse, but when he turned it on, no one could catch him!!! The Fleet is one of my favorites....unfortunately was hurt after the Belmont, and we did not see him race as much as we would have liked. Johnny Longdon says he was the best horse he ever rode....

Whirlaway was just part of an especally famous year-1941: Citizen Kane, Louis vs. Conn, the 56 game hitting streak, Ted Williams'.406, Mickey Owens, and of course, Pearl Harbor. What a year!
@johntucker7063
@johntucker7063 Год назад
In 1941, more than 3 million cars were manufactured in the U.S. Only 139 more were made for the duration of WWII. Life expectancy for males was 63.1 and 66.8 for females. The price of a movie ticket was 25 cents. The book "Curious George" was published. The movie the "Maltese Falcon" was also released. Mickey Rooney, Bob Hope and Bing Crosby were big stars. Thank you for recognizing the big events that took place during 1941. PS - I think Whirlaway was much more intelligent than he is given credit for.

Year, Ta'Kara is the extreme. But you'd be surprised, if you look at world record holders, at the number of horses you never heard of. Some just have a great day once in their lives. Ta'Kara ran a smart race, taking the lead from the start and setting a slow pace. Like to know what happended to Big Brown: the NYC humidity? didn't like the Belmont track?

Right, Monarchos broke 2:00 min. in 2001(?), 1:59 4/5, same as beloved Sham, who would have won Triple Crown if it just hadn't been for that "other horse," everyone keeps referring to.

@@johntucker7063 In 1973, I was a huge fan of Sham and rooted for him against Secretariat every time they raced. However, as time has passed and I have studied his record, I have to say that Sham's reputation has been way overdone because he had those races with Secretariat. He had two great races, the Derby and the Preakness. But in a short career of only 13 races, Sham only won five of those. He was a good, gutsy horse, but not great and even the triple crown wouldn't have been a foregone conclusion if Secretariat wasn't in them.

The second greatest race horse in history. Obviously, Secretariat is my pick for #1. Whirlaway was simply amazing in the way that he would just noodle around at the back of the pack, and then explode past the rest of the field. It was almost as if he was saying "Ok Guys, I'm gonna spot you all 20 lengths, and then I'm gonna blow you off of the track."

I know.. even though I love Secretariat and want him to remain invincible, so to speak, that's such a silly human trait. The horses aren't bothered that much. What does it mean, that therefore Man O'War, or Secretariat or any other champion is to be dismissed as meaningless if record is broken? They're all beloved !
@WhiteCamry
@WhiteCamry 18 лет назад
Jim McKay gets one detail wrong. Whirlaway indeed set the record for the 1-1/4 mile Kentucky Derby at 2:01 4/5 in 1941 but it was beaten well before Secretariat. In 1962 Decidedly lowered the record to 2:00 4/5, and in 1964 Northern Dancer lowered it furher to 2:00 even. Secretariat lowered it to a then-world record 1:59 2/5 in 1973, and that's still the race record to this day.
@johntucker7063
@johntucker7063 Год назад
And Sham also broke 2 minutes placing second to Secretariat. Monarchos ran 1:59:97 on a very fast track.

@benthekeeshond545

Rainy Moon Really? I think it is no accident that some of Whirlaway 's descendants are hard to work with, just like Whirlaway. Of course, I watched Whirlaway through RU-vid. But Whirlaway became my favorite Champion. I am no expert, but would Whirlaway set many speed records if he could start normally like other horses? I mean, Whirlaway was like 15 lengths behind at the quarter turn and won by a Preakness track record time. Wow! If Whirlaway sprint out of the gate, that record may not be broken even by the great Secretariat.

Don't you realize what S did in 5 wks. not just Hawkster at Santa Anita 1989 at 2:22.8. I like others. Arcaro said Kelso could beat the s--t out of Citation when Nack asked him. Arcaro told Turcotte he road the best. Hollie Hughes was most renowned trainer in U.S. at time. He and Hatton (Daily Racing Form for years) both saw ManOWar.I'm just reporting.

Chill out, people. Horse racing is conditional. Secretariat was a really good horse with good times, he couldn't help his stablemate was hurt or didn't like the track or whatever. Sham and Sec were both darned good, but Sec won the TC, end of story. If he'd gotten a beat off and Sham beat him the same story would be told. Some people loved how he ran, others didn't. Racing is conditional.
@bon1042
@bon1042 17 лет назад
I Why would Charles Hatton who saw them all including MOW say S was the best, he could do it all. Hollie Hughes who saddled 1916 Derby or Belmont(?) winner knew it all and after Belmont said S was the best. I don't need BEST I'm quoting experts. There weren't plenty of horses better, maybe as or almost as good but not PLENTY BETTER. Read the facts. cont.
