Whirlpool At Mutton Cove

We took the dogs out to a place called "Mutton Cove" next to the ASC site at Outer harbour when we noticed this. A large whirlpool that is caused when the tide goes out to sea, this seems to be the only point where it can drain in and out and it causes an anti-clockwise whirlpool effect just like when the bath drains but much larger, the diameter of this whirlpool at the opening being about 1.5 metre's . Thought it was quite interesting so got into the water to do some underwater filming of the tube, I haven't seen anything like this before and I was quite mesmerised watching it. Have also included some stills of the Mutton Cove Conservation Reserve highlights, quite a nice place.

Obviously it is a natural dammed area with a leak in it. The dammed area store water at high tide and lose it at low tide, This is an excellent position to put a water turbine to generate electricity, both when the lake is being filled and the lake is being drained.

So it is draining into some sort of underground cavern under the water? Yet isn't that already filled with water since it is still covered?
@painJm1
@painJm1 11 лет назад
Is just an area that is segregated from the ocean, you can see it draining out at 1:50 so when the tide goes out the water drains from what is a essentially a large pool of sea water.

How Do Whirl Pools Form
@gijstubben2044
@gijstubben2044 9 лет назад
Robbie Hall When to opposite currents meet, they will twist around eachother with great speed. Depending on the force of the current, a whirlpool will grow size and, in extreme cases like the one near Norwegian coasts, will be able to destroy smaller vessels.
