How to fix a dishwasher that wont drain. The most common problem I run into. Model # WDF320PADS2 although this dishwasher repair works the same with many models.
I followed the video and checked everything including the pump. Narrowed it down to the tubing being clogged so disconnected, let out all the drainage that was backed up and ran a snake through the hole in the sink drain to the end of the tube to clear out. Put everything back together and the dishwasher started draining properly again. Thanks to this video I was able to see what I was looking for in the sink drain, eliminate any other possibilities, and clear all connecting hoses to make sure any clogs were cleared. HELPFUL VIDEO!!!
Worked like a charm! If you can't twist the pump off, there may be a little button on the top left you need to press to deploy. Feel around for it and you'll find it eventually.
Yes! I had the same challenge getting the pump off without depressing the release. I found another video that shows it clearly ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PC1tmlmpTM0.html. Thanks for everyone's help. My issue was pieces of glass had lodged in the pump impeller where it couldn't discharge the water.
@@billg00001 This is exactly what I needed to get that the pump to turn so I could remove it! But how to test that the pump fan will turn. He mentions in the video about "turning the power back on". We have a wall switch that turns on/off the power to the appliance, but simply turning that back on doesn't seem to have any effect on making those blades turn. Is there some other power switch internally that he's referring to?
@PongGod if you turn power on but don't start the cycle, close the door, and the pump should come back on and spin. I did that for mine and the motor starting spinning. This troubleshooting cleared that step, but didn't solve my problem. Happy fixing!
@@CN-bg1fy OK, but if I close the door, how can I tell if the pump motor starts spinning? Quickly open the door back up and see that it's still spinning?
Thank you so much for this video!!! Our Whirlpool dishwasher had a lot of water left inside the bottom of the washer this weekend. I thought we would have to purchase a new washer. But before we did, I found your video and showed it to my husband. He went through the same steps as you did, and sure enough, we had some debris that had gotten past the filter. He cleared the line and we started the washer back up and then sent it through the drain cycle - SUCCESS. All taking just a few minutes. Your video saved us HUNDREDS of dollars!! THANK YOU!!!
So many times you get on a fixit video and you get a video that is 30 minutes long, and it doesn’t help. This was the most helpfully succinct video I have watched since the beginning of me watching videos for help. Great Job!
My dishwasher wasn’t draining and I found this video. 5 minutes later, I pulled out 2 pieces of glass and reattached the pump. Ran the dishwasher for a minute and hit the Drain button and it worked. Never would have fixed it on my own without watching this video. Thank you!
All instructional videos on RU-vid should be this good and concise. Thank you for sharing, I can see from the comments that you have helped a lot of people out.
That same piece of glass must be making it's way across the country because I found an identical one in the exact same place when my dishwasher wouldn't drain properly. Thank you for this great video. Saved me some cash.
I haven't tried this on my dishwasher yet but the video was short, right to the point, clear, simple to understand, and with clear video of exactly what needed to happen. Excellent job and I'm very hopeful that I'll be able to either fix or pinpoint the problem with my dishwasher now. Thank you!
My Whirlpool diswasher wouldn't drain. I followed the instructions on this video and found a small peice of glass clogging the pump - just like in the video. I reinstalled the pump and it works perfectly. Thanks for making this job easy!
I'm going to add something to your troubleshooting process. My Frigidare was sporadic on draining. Sometimes it would drain it all, sometimes the whole bottom would have an inch, sometimes, just the center would have water. Sometimes the water was clean, sometimes still cloudy. So, I figured the drain pump was going bad. Ordered one from Amazon at 1/3 cost of OEM and replaced it. Worked great right out of the box. Next day, once again, water standing in the bottom. Kept researching and found someone suggesting to make sure the hose was clear where it entered the P-Trap. Took that hose loose, poked around with a screw driver, nothing there. Put it back together, sometimes worked, sometimes didn't. Today, took off P-trap and found debris in here. In fact, found a metal elbow fitting, like would be on the input side of the dishwasher. This had to have been there for 30 years! Removed it but wasn't satisfied that that was the issue. I am sure this was causing some issues with slow draining but couldn't be the whole problem. My dishwasher draining issue had really become a problem in the past 2 weeks. Went back to the drain connection at the dishwasher, removed the hose and this little black rubber piece fell out, all deformed. Started looking into this and discovered it is a back flow prevention flapper. Cost about $10 on Amazon. It's purpose is to what? Block water that is in the discharge hose from entering back into the dishwasher! I've got one on order, should be here in a couple of days, but I'm betting this makes my problem totally go away.
what are the odds, not only do you have the same exact model as I do, but I also had a piece of glass stuck up against the impeller. Thanks for the quick/well explained video, saved us a bunch of time and money!
Simply incredible. This tutorial was on point. No wasted speaking or video. I am so happy with this. This was my exact problem and I was able to quickly tackle it and get it resolved. Thank you!
Excellent video. While this wasn't my problem, it gave me confidence to keep working on it to figure it out. Turns out I had a completely clogged drain hose under the sink into the garbage disposal. Saved me a service call!
This video sure helped. A month ago my Whirlpool dishwasher started to make a light grinding/ rattling noise but then the noise went away again so I thought whatever it was had self resolved itself. Fast forward to yesterday and it stopped draining completely so I followed the steps in this video to remove the pump, nothing was lodged in the housing and the pump vanes looked fine and spun with the power on. I then tried blowing through the drain hose and found it was plugged solid. Upon investigating I found a little piece of grey plastic had broken off from somewhere in the dishwasher, worked it’s way through the pump and then eventually lodged in the drain hose. It had caused enough small debris to build up over time that it blocked the hose. Easy fix and good to go again however I don’t know where the piece of broken plastic is from but knock on wood it seems to work without it.
Thank you so much for this help. I am living in France and had a similar problem with another Whirlpool dishwasher. In my case it was a little cable tie!! Both the idea that something could get stuck and stop the impellers and the way to detach the pump were invaluable pieces of information. You saved me a new dishwasher! Best regards, Barry
THANK YOU but anyone else who couldn't easily twist the pump off - there's actually a little notch you have to depress to release it, then it pops right off! I can't believe I just did this by myself. I feel so empowered and I definitely saved money on a new dishwasher!!!
Mine had a piece of glass stuck in there too. I can't thank you enough. My husband can fix anything, but he is on bedrest with a back injury and I was able to fix this myself before he woke up. Thank you so much.
I have never commented on a RU-vid video before but this was the exact problem that I had and the exact resolution that I needed. I had to read the comments to see that my particular model (wdf750sayw2) did indeed had a latch that I had to depress on the far (left) side to remove the pump. Once I did that, the pump was easily removed turning it counter clockwise and I was able to remove a decent sized shard of glass that got passed the filter. Thank you for making and posting this video!
I fixed it, thanks to you. My first big repair! Several hours of researching dishwashers won't drain articles, then progressing to youtube videos and wrassling with the dishwasher on its side. Yep, broken glass within the drain pump somehow. 5 minutes to fix. PLus 2 days investigating new dishwashers then giving youtube videos one more shot.
Just followed this guide, got a lot of gunk out but still would not drain. Checked the Air Gap next to gossip, that was plugged up. Cleaned it out and drained just fine. Great video on cleaning everything and what to check, thank you.
RAS. I owe you a big thanks. I followed your lead and was successful in removing several pieces of glass in the pump. I couldn't get the pump off so I used a shop vac to suck the debris from the hose connection to the pump. After a few tries I was able to clear the impeller. Works great now. Thanks
Good video. That pump was tough to turn and get off the first time.Being not strong, i would have never gone for it and turned with all my strength to loosen with out your video. I have cleaned many slow draining dwashers but never took the pump out like the whirlpool requires. No luck with finding glass or a label. Moved on to checking the drain hose and found the problem there. Thanks for taking tome to make this. Girl with houses.
Your video was spot on, I found what appears to be either a piece of uncooked pasta or a small sea shell in my pump. I didn't see it at first, but then I heard something hit the floor. You saved me from buying a new pump. Thank you
Fixed our dishwasher in 5 minutes with this video. There's definitely a button on the top left side that releases the pump. Keep up the great work and thank you!
Solid information! I had a random piece of plastic in mine. Up and running in under 5 min. I used a sheet pan to catch the water when pulling off the pump. Thanks soo much!
Great video, mine had a piece of glass just like yours. Fixed it right up. I would have been scared of breaking that pump, thanks for showing how you got it off. Thanks again, you're a good man.
You sir are a legend. I’m an electrician who works in camp while being man of the house, well the wife thinks I’m super man now so it’s going to be a merry Christmas thanks to you. So merry Christmas and thanks for the gift that is this video
I did break a glass inside dishwasher. It worked fine for about a month. Found glass in the filter area and by the pump. Drains perfect now. Your video was spot. Thanks
Thank you so much for this video, this was the exact issue my dishwasher pump had, followed your instructions and had the drain pump up and running in 5 minutes !!
Thanks for the video - had to put some force into the twist to remove the pump but my situation was exactly like the video - a piece of glass got down there and after removing it worked like a champ!
Awesome video, helped me resolve the drain issue on my Kitchenaid KDPE234GPSO dishwasher. My drain hose was mostly clogged, used compressor and had a few chopped nuts come out. Likely from washing the Pampered Chef nut chopper, where it's easy to leave a few small pieces in the corners of the blades. I removed the pump to check for anything else, but it was fine. The 11 in. Long-Reach Needle Nose Pliers from HarborFreight made it easy to release the outlet hose clamp. Thank you for the help!
You da man! Your video was exactly our issue, two things we found #1 the flat screen was/is warped, that didn't help with the debris problem and #2 other videos say you have to remove the whole unit to change the pump!...Nien Fraulein! That was the best 5mins and 2 seconds I've spent. Thank you Robin
Thank you for sharing this hack. I found piece of glass before watching the video but it wasn’t working. Then I unplugged it, removed pump and spinned with hand and plugged back, worked perfectly! God Bless🙏🏽
Good video. Mine would not drain so I followed your instructions and found my drain motor worked so I found that the drain hose was somehow clogged. Cleared that and works great. Now I need to figure out why it is not drying.
This is why I love RU-vid. I too had the exact same problem. Only I had to buy a little "mirror on a stick" at Harbor Freight to see the little release tab I had to push down. This video was a "life saver" for me. If you're anywhere near Ann Arbor Mi I owe you a beer.
Thank you for posting this video! Had a similar issue with mine, however when taking the pump component out I found a tooth pick wedged in the fins of the pump! Have no idea how it got there but your video saved me an appliance repairman visit!
I had this exact problem. Cleaned the filter for the first time and after that a broken piece of glass worked its way down to the pump. Thanks so much!!
My problem was a piece of glass too. Thanks for posting such a great video. I'm sure my wife will be thrilled she can now use the dishwasher. Happy anniversary, here's your gift. 😂😂
Could not twist the pump. I had to loose 8 pounds before attempting to do this. I wasn't able to twist the pump more than 1/8th inch. Another comment mentions a button on the top left (of the pump, I assume) but i didn't find that. Then I noticed the little black rubber elbow connected to the semi-transparent plastic - the drain. So i used my pliers to open the clamp, detached the black hose from the outlet on the pump, then covered the openings (on both the pump AND the hose with my Shopvac. Flipped the breaker and filled the area where the filter goes into with 3 cups of water and hit the "Cancel/Drain" button. Works like a charm!
@@ApartmentMaintenancePro Thank you for all your help. I checked the outlet by blowing through it, I couldn't. The outlet from the dishwasher was jammed up with foul smelling junk that blocked the flow - completely. A length of 3' plastic unblocked it. So thanks again.
I had the exact same problem, and this was the fix. I would never have known how to remove the motor, which it turns out is much simpler than I expected. Thanks so much!
Thanks for the video. Mine had a dime blocking where the drain hose attatches. Father in-law came and looked at it while I was at work and said it needed a new pump. Thankful I found the video and it was a simple fix that cost nothing but some time.
Hurray l have just fixed my dishwasher thanks to you. It’s the little things that can set someone back a few quid. Vid was accurate, short and precise, brilliant🤗.
Thanks a lot..wife said dishwasher holding water..quick Google search and a prayer led me here done in a quick manner...kids didnt clean out all the macaroni 😇..got it to drain correctly..back to relaxing..blessings to ya for your posting
Thanks for the video. I had the same problem. Dishwasher would not drain. Turned out to be glass stuck in the pump. In 5 minutes, this video shows what other videos take up to 15 minutes to show.
thank you for this video! my situation was a bit weird. I followed your instructions to the T and did a test cycle. it made a weird noise so I cancelled it. I opened the door and there was a clump of the washing pod on at the bottom, it wasn't there when I scooped the water out from before. it kind of leads me to believe that the machine turned off mid cycle from the previous load; hence the washing pod clump and the undrained water.
Oh my gosh! This was exactly our problem!! Thank you for putting this video together as it helped us solve our problem and SAVED us MONEY too!! Your video was easy to follow, easy to understand, was the perfect length of time, and quality too!!! Great job :-)
Excellent video. On mine, the water ejection hole in the garbage disposal was clogged with food gunk, maybe from letting the disposal get too full sometimes. If you hear the pump spinning, might not be a bad idea to check that first. (though removing and cleaning the filter is quick and easy and should probably be done anyways).
I actually disconnected the drain hose from the pump and blew compressed air into the hose, which forced the gunk out the the ejection hole... not sure that's advisable but it sure worked.
@@resarfekim - Funny thing is I found a piece of glass in mine when I took the pump off. I was all excited, put it all back together and ran the drain cycle. Nothing, followed by a bunch of swear words. Went back to this video and started scrolling through the comments and found yours. Got out the air compressor and after a few minutes, finally blew a 5" plug of crud out. Again, got all excited and put it all back together. Ran the drain cycle. Nothing but more swear words. Decided to run the drain cycle a 2nd time, and was about to get out the compressor again, but it finally blew out another 3" plug of crud with about 20 seconds left on the drain cycle! Filled it up again and drained it without a 3rd plug of nastiness. The whole thing drains like a charm now! Thanks AMP and Mike!
This is the video I've been hoping to find!!! I had a piece of glass almost the exact same size caught in mine! My wife has her dishwasher back, and I'm being called a hero now. Thanks, brother.
Thanks a million. Did it exactly how you showed. Had a similar piece of glass in mine. I do recall having a broken glass in there a few days ago. Took about 15 minutes thanks to your video.
Thank you so much. I saved myself $270 . Quite surprised to see a glass piece same as in the video. Very helpful video. Grateful that I found this on time.
Excellent tutorial. Mine was very similar and a very similar piece of glass or plastic. Thanks for the help as it made it very easy to locate everything and do the job.
Great video. Got mine out and a really thin rubber band was wrapped around the impeller. Couldn't get it out completely so it's fubar and will be replaced later today. Thanks for the step by step.
Great video. I went through the steps, didn't find anything lodged in the drain. How much water left is too much water ? Because I had about 1/4 of a cup. I had look for the push in button which was on the left side. I feel like it is side top left side.
Identical dishwasher and problem. My solution was to uncouple the drain pump hose and the piece of glass dropped to the floor. Also I noticed to be careful with the difficulty to fully lock in the filter. Thanks for your help.
Thanks dude! Just was at a work order for a whirpool washer not draining. I didn't have a turkey baister so when I took out the pump the standing water that was in the washer went EVERYWHERE. Hahaha. There was no glass but when I put it back in it just started working again! Thank you for the tips sir!
Could not find any blockage/obstructions and the pump spin was running well. I am not sure why it was not draining and gonna test it to see whether it is working now. Great video and thanks
Hi ,I have the same problem. It's not completely draining at all.. I loved this video but my 3 month old dishwasher isn't stuck with anything but it still leaves at least a quarter inch of water under the filter .. can you let me know how you fixed yours please?
Thank you! Even though my husband did the fixing, I was able to diagnose with the help of your video. There was a piece of melted plastic in the motor.
I have a whirlpool dishwasher that wasn’t draining. I tried all of these steps to troubleshoot but none fixed it. My issue was that the air gap (located on the top of the kitchen sink…it looks like a cap next to the faucet) was plugged with a broken piece of plastic. Something to try if none of these steps help. Great video!
Hell yeah quick and direct. This worked so well. Man I wish other informational videos were this good. One note. The pump has a latch on the face at about 2oclock.
Thanks man !! literally just pulled a piece of glass out of mine. I came on here to see how to remove the pump and I have the same damn issue as you did. Thanks for making this simple yet informative video.
Great video I was able to follow it step by step. It turned out to be a plugged drain hose at the garbage disposal but I learned how to take care of the machine if it was the pump. Thank you!!!
Thank you now I just need to get someone who can physically get down on the floor to check this for me. You probably just saved me a service call charge.
Thank you for this video. Probably saved me 150 dollars. It appears the screen was caked with calcium. Once I got that off I was good to go. I also checked the pump. Thanks again
