steve thepirate when woke up he started the day with a glass at 3:00pm. had another class at 3:50pm. refilled the glass with ice at 5:30pm and then after dinner like you said poured two jiggers over grated ice
Bought my dad Chivas regal cuz its his favorite budget whiskey and only wanted to get a review of it. Turns out you guys are hilarious and really knowledgeable about this stuff with a ton of charisma on top. Just wanted to say you two keep being awesome
Chivas Regal 12 is proof that budget blends can be perfectly drinkable, you don’t need to spend big money on a single malt to enjoy a dram. Bottom shelf matters!!
I agree. Dewars white label is a decent dram, and if you insist on single malt, auchentoshan american oak, deanston Virgin oak and oban little Bay were all under 40 dollars at my local liquor store
A great idea, another idea is they could sample spices, and possibly other flavors that are typically found in whiskies.... maybe one day they can do a flight of ports or sherries, even madieria etc and give the notes on those for science!
I was seriously so stoked hearing my comment in a video, haha! And Rex, I'm a big fan of the video nerdery, please do more. Basically it's the way the lighting is. It makes you guys stand out as hyper realistic up front, but it makes the background look flat and two dimensional. Gives you guys almost an outline that looks just like you'd see from someone using a green screen.
This video had perfect timing. I just got home from Costco where I got 2 bottles of this Chivas for tonight and this popped up in my feed. It was meant to be. Happy Aloha New Year's from Hawai'i. You guys should do a review out here. Much Aloha. 🤙🤙🤙
WAIT A SECOND, I'm 5 and a half minutes in and I don't think I've seen you guys actually review a whisky so much before, tasting notes and all that jazz
Ok so I never saw a comparison of the 12. Should it have been vs Japanese? The 12 was a basically hidden single glass behind a bottle. I guess I missed the part where u both drank it. Sorry.... Really wanted the same in depth review of the 12. Just a salty Chivas 12 fan lol. Love y'all.
Alright Rex and Daniel, needing a clarification on a debate with s fellow MB... We were admiring a bottle of of the 30 yr anniversary Booker's. The box is made out of reclaimed booker's warehouse wood. I loved the box as pretty fiddly bits. The other MB stipulates the box doesn't count as fiddly bits since it isn't attached to the bottle. I postulate that anything that comes with the bottle counts as fiddly. What say you???
While the question wasn't posed to me, I would think that any object attached to the purchase of whiskey meant to entice you into purchasing said whiskey counts as a fiddly bit.
Chivas XV is my new favourite addition to the brand lineup. A 15yr old blend finished in cognac & champagne casks. The finish has a noteworthy velvety complexity. Highly recommended.
Daniel: I support your effort to keep the “secret stash” a secret, especially from any and all mooches, for obvious potential break ins. Some things should be kept sacred and secret. Rex, I recommend you procure your own secret stash for the purpose of “bargaining power”. Cheers and happy new year to both of you.
Rex's mooching skills are greatly improved he disagreed with Daniel to get another pour of whiskey and Daniel didn't pick up on his mooching until it was too late.🤣🤣🤣
I have had a few Japanese whiskies and an Irish whisky agedin Mizunara. But, I have yet to discern the "classic" Mizunara profile. For example, wines from Rioja aged French barrels have more vanilla and those from American oak haves notes of dill as well as vanilla. So, if I were tasting 3 whiskies aged in these 3 different types of barrels, what would be a key indicator that one of them was aged in Mizunara and not French or American oak? Thanks.
I've never been a drinker but I decided to honor my pops and take up his favorite drink (only for special occasions) Chivas Regal. I have fond memories as a child on Christmas eve, being allowed to have a tiny sip from my dad's glass (a round etched globe). What wonderful times they were. I don't remember if it was a 12 or 18, I was far too young to appreciate it anyway, it was more important that I was just having "dad's drink" really and still is the main motivation. Thank you guys for this great video, I look forward to reliving those memories now that I'm learning a bit more about CR, the experience will be worth more than gold! Any advise regarding 12 vs 18?
Magnificent channel and reviews. My whiskey of choice is makers 46 and coke even though it isn’t exactly a purist choice I find that is is satisfying and lovely for me. I’m only 22 and have just started to dip a toe into whiskeys what could you recommend to try straight to see if I can find the flavors that make up a really great whiskey? Keep up the good work and thank you
My wife plans on getting me Jefferson’s Ocean Voyage 14 Cask Strength. She likes the idea of it aging at sea because I am a Navy veteran. Have you guys tried the Ocean Cask Strength? I’ve seen your partial review of the regular Ocean and was curious about the higher proof version.
Hey! So this doesn’t have anything to do with this video but I wanted to mention something I found out I thought was cool. I was experimenting with my whisky collection and trying different combinations to see how they affected the flavors of each other. I happened to drink some Oban Little Bay first and went from that to Caol Ila 12. When I got to the Caol Ila and nosed it for the first time, I got the strongest BBQ note I have ever smelled off an Islay whisky. It smelled just like a rich BBQ brisket or pulled pork. Even my wife, who does not like whisky very much and has a hard time smelling anything but alcohol could smell it and was impressed. It was amazing! It would be cool if you guys could try this at some point (if you haven’t stumbled upon it already) and see if you get the same result. It was amazing how the smell and taste of Little Bay affected the taste of the Caol Ila. Love this channel and thankful for all you’ve done to help me understand and gain knowledge about whisky! Thanks!
Man I love the channel. Normally I drink bourbon, but the other day I picked up a Knob Creek Rye Cast Strength 2018 Limited Edition and loved it! Would like to see you guys do a review of that.
Hey guys, recently I was pondering something. "Can you age potato vodka in a barrel and call it whisk(e)y? So I did some searching and found that potato vodka aged in barrels is in fact a thing. It is mainly done in eastern Europe and is revered to as "starka". Most of them are young aged, up to 18 months or so. Have you guys ever had this? If aged longer would it be whisky? What do you thing it would be like? Help me Somm! The mooch can come too
This is going to be a good year. This format is awesome. Mooch is getting comparisons (a huge deal as you can figure out what something is based of other items you might have tried) lots of notes and jokes but also knowledge. Keep up the great work.
Thank you guys for being so responsible about your drinking and sending a positive message of joy and caution. You choose to be humble, rather than macho about drinking whiskey. That is refreshing! Cheers on 2019!
Enjoying your channel. This was a particularly humorous and entertaining show plus I do like my value Chivas Regal brand between other whiskys. Was curious about this Mizunara variety I've seen. I'll be looking to pick up this bottle soon after your back story. Great job messaging to drink responsibly!
I was at Heathrow and I got to try to Chivas ultis and the mizunara. I think it was because the guy tried to sell me the Glenlivet 25 and I said "nah, we have that one" 🙃 Anyway, I definitely preferred the ultis to the mizunara. Perhaps it's the fact it's a blended malt?
I had the privilege of opening a bottle of Taketsuru Pure Malt 12 year old for a New Years Eve toast. Now, on New Years Day, I have subscribed to your channel after watching this video. Here’s to Japanese whisky, which seems to be getting, increasingly, very interesting... cheers!
Managed to pick up a bottle of The Kurayoshi 12 when I was in Japan recently, and I love it. Have seen a bunch of your Japanese Whisky reviews but not this one. Interested to see what your opinions are on this bottle.
Hey if you have the time i would really appreciate if you could help me in a situation that i have... I was actually thinking of buying Chivas Regal to my father in law, he got me Lagavulin 16yo single malt scotish whiskey which as a not so experienced whiskey drinker is a amazing whiskey.....so anyway i was checking out different variations of drinks and right away im given 12yo, 18yo or 25yo options. 25 is quite expensive...but could you give any suggestions that what could be a good equivalent to Chivas Regal Mizunara, since atm i cant find any site that ships it to Finland. Thanks and happy new year.
Hey folks. I'm kinda new to the Tribe as well as what I would consider a noob on whiskey. I've searched all the videos and was wondering if the guys have ever done a tasting of Leadslingers? This was one of the first Bourbons I'd had and really enjoy it. Even after about 2 years of diving into whiskey. I would send them some to try if they haven't but sadly live in a state that doesn't sell it.
Would they make barrel staves less thick so they make more barrels per unit wood, especially as old wood is generally denser? Or are staves generally a standard thickness?
You two should try some Eiktyrne norwegian whisk(e)y! As a norwegian myself I would love to hear what you think. Don't know how available it is in the states though... But anyway, keep it up guys!
can you do a JW Black label vs Chivas Regal 12 video? In my country both whiskeys are the same price around P1300 per 1lt bottle. I tend to lean more towards the Chivas just because I like a more fruity less smoky whiskey, but Im planning on buying a JW Black label for xmas.
Just found this channel and it's awesome to see whiskey reviews made fun to watch! Would love to see cardhu gold reserve reviewed, it's one of my favourite!
After looking at this special edition of chivas, i just recall, recently i had one chivas XV gold, finish in champagne cognac cask. i am not a professional whisky taster, so i cant really explain what is the taste like, and i do not found any review about this whisky. Not sure whether Daniel and Rex able to get this bottle and make a review about it :) thank you.
So I'm 21 years old and I'm starting my collection based around you guys and your videos. I know I'm inexperienced so I won't be able to pick out notes that well but as soon as I drink I can then smell and pick them out. I'm wondering if it'll be like that forever or will I eventually be able to smell those notes first before drinking? Happy New Years and keep on that grind!
Happy New Year Guys! Last week one of my local stores had Lagavulin 8 for 39.99 if you have their VIP card (which of course I do). Needless to say I could not pass that up. It's gone. :( It was a good bottle. 3rd one I have finished. Whisky does not go bad in my house. Cheers.
Something that’s been driving me crazy. In the glengoyne 12 episode the hero whisky status was mentioned. What other whiskies make this status? Love the dry week concept, totally respect that.
Rex, the Japanese whiskey you are looking for is Kaiyo cask strength Japanese whiskey. It is aged in Mizunara Oak and bottled at 53.0%. However, no age statement.
I think I need dry week just to give my wallet a rest. Because ever since I started watching you guys I've been spending more money on Whiskey than normal, however, I am really enjoying it!
I think we need a "WET" dry week. By which I mean you guys try Rums, Gins, Vodkas, Tequila, Wine/Champagne, Beer/Cider, and off brand Whisky (Whisky made in the truest scene of rewriting the rules.)
If aging takes longer in mizunara barrels, why not try seeing whether it'll slow down that Texas rapid aging? Food for thought. By the way, having my first dram of the Chivas Mizunara while re-watching this, it's amazing. I wonder how the 12 and 18 year versions of this taste, but alas, I'm not in Japan and can't get them.
I have never had Japanese Whisky. I really, REALLY want to try some, but im not entirely sure if i would like it. I like scotch, but i dislike sherried scotch. Any suggestions for Japanese Whisky? If i dont get any suggestions, i will just probably just try Hibiki. (Also, i would like to try some more non-sherried scotches)
Rex, I think it's also the depth of field that your camera focuses over. People are accustomed to having the foreground in focus, with the background less so, and when we see the bottles in the background being focused, it seems fake, which we associate with green screen. Oh, and the jokes still need help, but the mooching is getting better ;)
Sounds like you guys need to try Kaiyo Mizunara Cask Strength Oak Aged Whisky. I got a bottle as an Xmas present and it’s exactly what you are calling for - Japanese, Mizunara, and cask strength.
That story about mizunara barrels reminds me of the story for the Forty Creek confederation oak whiskey. Apparently it tasted awful at first but omce the whiskey was left longer it turned out great
Somehow missed this video a few days ago when it came out, but found it after buying a bottle of Mizunara today. Compares similarly to Takesuru I think. A bargain at $30 here in Japan.
Hey guys. Im a new follower to your amazing channel. A friend of mine is a regular user of a brandy and whiskey warmer. What is your opinion on that? Is it worth trying out. It makes the house smell great and it seems to help is some form but i need your help with more info. Cheers.
3:10 You finally answered my question why I use sugar and other people use salt on their tomatoes. I want it like it looks "all sugary sweet." Thank you Daniel ! Next why do some people say "pop" and some people say "soda"?
Chivas 12 is my daily go to. Love it. Since they stopped making my favorite the old Johnnie Walker Gold. Drank cases of it and then they got rid of it and changed it.
I really enjoy your videos there informative and funny with that said the Chivas 12 is a whiskey that reminds me of my Father he drank a glass on the rocks with a splash of selzer water every day for as long as I can remember and coincidentally it was my first drink
Well gentleman, you converted another to the tribe. Been watching your videos this month and decided to get proper glasses and a sample box of compass box and a mini of whistlepig 10 rye. The rye was great and I just finished the peat monster sample and they were both great. Carry on you magnificent bastards.
Listening to Daniel talking about how Mary Poppins is his kind of movie. I always assumed that he just watched The Lord of the Rings and Hobbit on repeat to remind himself of home.
Redwood barrel? Is that possible/legal? That wood ( see what i did there?) be a great expiriment! I wood ( please stop me, its stronger then i am) buy that.
Did not know about this Japanese oak. Cool/crazy history behind it. Gonna try and get a bottle of Glendalough 13 Years Mizunara Cask Finish Single malt Whisky, 92 proof.
I was just at my local liquor store, and noticed this on the shelf, don't think I can bring myself to paying 60 dollars a bottle. Got deanston Virgin oak for 39 instead 🖒
Help! I don’t know how this dry week is going to be with me! I have a major issue... I can’t stop drinking Daniels tears 😭 it’s just so good when it hits your lips !
Peter Eggers The boiling point of ethanol is lower than that of water so you could not distill it to remove water, besides the heat in distillation would change some of the esters and other flavor molecules. You could possibly use a reverse osmosis membrane system to remove water but I’m not sure how the high pressure would affect the other molecules.
This sucks I'm aging some rye in a 2l cask, and I'm a week and a half in. I gotta taste it this week. I guess my dry week will have to be a "semi-dry" week. I won't taste too much...
I have a hard time drinking whisky because when I was 14 I got overly drunk on a Canadian whiskey. I might have been at the verg of alcohol poisoning. How do I get over this. I have found American honey is good and i can get over the body response to fear whiskey.
my wife struggled with that. she started just smelling my whiskeys when i've poured them, then to a little taste every now and then. The key is time and remembering that 1 glass of whiskey will not get you back to that 14 year old you.
@@robertmassey1965 i don't know about things to avoid, but you might have some really good luck with things that are dramatically different from canadian whiskey, so scotches (especially islays) and maybe some spicier bourbons
reviewed the fancy special Chivas and compared it... but I cannot find a review of the normal boring everyday Chivas 12... on a side note, back when I first started drinking (over 28 years ago... I'm 47 btw) I, as most kids my age at the time, Did Shots of whiskey. Shots Of Chivas made me sick and I haven't touched it since. I think that shots of Chivas 12 is why I dislike Blended Scotch soo much. of late I have been trying to explore blended Scotch and I've only found a couple that I like. Compass Box Peat Monster and CB Spice Tree are Very Tasty. Johnny Walkers (red, black, blue, gold, and Jane Walker), Monkey Shoulders, et al... not so much. SO, for the first time in over 28 years I went and bought a bottle of Chivas Regal 12... and, Meh. it's ok. Milder than I remember. Nothing offensive At All. nowhere near the harsh bite I remember (sipping helps, rather than shooting a shot and hoping for the best( so yeah. a Much Hated blend turned into a mild if only ok sipper.
