Jeff is a real gem. His selfless support for the Ontario backcountry, and his willingness to help out, contribute, and answer any questions, even when he doesn't have a $$ stake in the conversation, make him a unique treasure. Thanks for doing this chat Kevin! And thank you for the maps Jeff!

Good, fun interview Kevin! You nicely drew out some of the more interesting changes in his new maps (unofficial trails, contour lines, etc.), and covered some of the recent history that I had a been wondering about. I will be ordering mine shortly! 👍

Just ordered and excited to add these 5 to my collection. I’ve always used the old Chrismar maps and a digital copy of Jeff’s and was always amazed by the accuracy of Jeff’s. As a solo tripper, I spend hours studying, planning and preparing for a safe trip! Having Jeff’s new maps and new updated digital versions make me feel even more excited for my next adventure!

I recently bought one of the new Map's by Jeff for use in Algonquin this summer and it won't be my last. I used to feel the need to bring topographic maps with me, but Jeff's are now better for the canoe tripper. A thousand thank-yous, Jeff!

I've always loved my maps growing up. When I started tripping I was immediately struck with a deep appreciation for his map detail. These new maps are amazing for the portage elevation. It was something I found myself doing at the end of the day. It was great knowing the steep index but I jotted where and how the trail went for future trips. It definitely saves me a lot of time!! 😊

Thank you! That was the first feature I ever invented from scratch. I didn't have anything to go off of regarding how it should work or how it should look, and so that was all a result of my creativity. When I started designed it, I didn't know if I would even be able to come up with an accurate value that was reasonably consistent between paddlers, or if people would even like it. I'm really happy with how it ultimately turned out, but it's particularly affirming to hear how much you've ended up enjoying it!

I still use my 1992 FOA map, i have it all mentally calibrated and at my age it's kind of a habit that's not going to be broken. But as soon as I heard about this new map I fired off an order. I was pretty sure it would be well worth owning just for reference at home, even if I never take it on trip. And it exceeded even those expectations. eg: the contours! I might have summertime habits, but those contours all of a sudden make this a legit winter camping map too.
@mapsbyjeff
@mapsbyjeff 5 месяцев назад
High praise!! I'm particularly happy you're enjoying the contours. I've never been happy with them until this new map. Both the density and the darkness.
@mattmcconnell4814
@mattmcconnell4814 5 месяцев назад
I have never understood the attitudes of people who would be against having more information, people who make statements like "if I want to know the height of the portage, I go there." This comes across as foolish macho posturing to me, what am I misunderstanding? Excellent interview!
@mapsbyjeff
@mapsbyjeff 5 месяцев назад
On that point in particular I just find it funny because I'm just showing the same info as the contour lines, but with a different visualization that's hopefully easier to understand and digest. I've never heard anyone argue that contour lines show 'too much information'. But, at the end of the day I just shrug and say 'to each their own'.

@@mapsbyjeff Jeff thanks for the reply. I've been using your maps even in pfd form for many years so thank you. Kevin got me into the backcountry when I was 24(2014). Are you using the 66i or 66s? Why not the Montana? So the question really is why the 66 ?
@mapsbyjeff
@mapsbyjeff 5 месяцев назад
@@ktownc936 We're almost the same age (I just turned 35). I'm using the 66s. I don't really care about any communication features since I've always tripped without anything like that and I've gotten used to/enjoy having no outside contact. But that's just me. I had a Dakota 20 years ago, which had a touchscreen like the Montana, and it sucked. I want to mark things in very particular spots sometimes, so I like having the D-pad for that. As well, it was the only model with RINEX support at the time, which is something I really wanted (I bought the device on the spot for that, despite being otherwise happy with my 62s). I'd have to look into the Montana more, but I know some of their other lower end devices have worse antennas than the GPSMAP series, which is something that I care about.
