Ralfy, While this was a blend review it was perhaps your best work yet. That story you told was so inviting and so steeped in tradition that it made me think that if I could ever write a book about whisky in Scotland I would interview as many old timers as I could. Trust me, I am not calling you an ild timer, but to hear that story made me smile and it also made me think about how there must be literally infinite stories of the the whisky drinking world including here in the US. I mean after all it is the Scotch Irish settlers that made whisky in the US a staple of American history and transformed the whisky industry into what it is today. Please, and I underscore please, tell more stories in the future!Thank you for sharing! Mike Maryland, USA
Great story Ralfy. It was interesting to see during our recent visit to Auchentoshan, that they did not allow pictures taken inside the warehouse due to tax related issues and strong regulations.
Ralfy, great show. I have been a subscriber for a while now and this is one of my favorite reviews. A lot of that has to do with the story. I always love the extra information that you add to the reviews, but the story was great. I personally would love to see more of these worked into your reviews. Love your show.
I'm having the young Cambeltown Loch nas and it's a blast! I like it so much. It's light with sugary sweetness, noticeable medium fishy marine peat, salt and brine. than, Vanilla, Almonds. Zesty bitter tannin wood. Spirit driven, marine stuff. Lovely! Review it some day Ralfy.
Such a classic tale told by a master -- hiking the hills back in the day eh? Been there, loved doing just that ( not in Scotland, alas, but across North America ). Also very informative malt review, i'm sold.
Your story reminds me a bit (I'm stretching here) of the train theft of Methylamine in Breaking Bad. Looking forward to your reviews of readily obtainable 12 YO's!
Wonderful story from yesteryear that could have happened in the early days. Thank god that people in charge at Springbank distillery have listened to you. 46 percent and probably no chill-filtrationand colouring. Need to put the Campbeltown Loch 21 years now on my shopping list. Cheerio to you
Great wee story that Ralfy! I watched a documentary quite recently on the BBC with David Hayman about the Clyde Puffer, and heard one or two other stories about the crew's exploits on the isles to get some free whisky! Apparently a few crews missed days at a time when they overindulged on it!
I think the quality of Springbank 21 year old releases has improved over the last few years for sure. They've also just released a cask strength 21 year old, can't wait to try it.
Hi Ralfy. Nice one! Thanks. got an online order coming and just under $100!! We've got: *CB Great Kings Street *Dimple 15yo *Knapogue Castle12yo ...should be an interesting July!! cheers maltmate.
Hi Ralfy. That was some malty yarn!! Its not hard to wonder if the good old days were actually that good. either way yea, Big Brother HAS really put the kabosh on shenanigans in general. Today, technology & science have their feet firmly planted in every aspect of life. Long live the storytellers and the follies of yesteryear! Ralfy any possibility of a re-rev of our favorite blend...JWBlack? We think it still holds its own.how about you?!! cheers
I just found out that I have been working for a guy that you know very well. Paul from bon accord glasgow. I love your vidoe reviews good luck and I hope to see you soon
Hi ralfy! Is there a whisky which you would give 100/100 or is that not 'possible' in your opinion. If you have which one was it? Some bottles can cost, say, £20.000 (or even a quarter million). What is the point of that in your opinion? I know that supply and demand decide those prices, but at what price do you stop paying for quality and start paying extra purely for other factors (marketing, collectability, rarity, status, etc.). Cheers and thanks a lot for everything, your videos are a pleasure to watch and i'm going to buy Bunnahabhain 12 because of them ;)
Anything Springbank (Longrow, Hazelburn, Loch, Springbank) I always get almond first, marzipan second and with the old stuff the coconut. I see your tasting notes don't have these usually - difference in palate?
Speaking of JWBlack, I'd love to get my hands on a bottle of the Talisker12yo that goes into JWB. Is that just a Diageo proprietary expression Ralfy? or is it an available whiskey (T12)?? Thanks
this was good review on campbt loch...........i have been following your reviews and it very good in detail. Why don't you give a try and review on Black Dog blended scotch whisky !!
Ralphy. At 4:00 you mention a list of three Speysides. Gragganmore, Glen Elgin and something that sounded like "Channenich". What was the third one you mentioned?
James Booth Thanks James. I also thought of this but Teaninich is North Highlands, north from Dalmore I think. Hardly a Speyside. That's problably it though.
(CL 21 is on the list). Any thoughts about another interesting and relatively affordable 21 Glen Cadam "exceptional"? Looking forward to more stories. Thx.
Hey Ralfy i forgot one question. Could you recommend any books with stories like you told? I have several books, but they talk about the more modern pursuit of the perfect dram and a wee bit of history involved as well as another two which chronicle one man's travels across Scotland. Mike
Ralfy please can you write what is the name of the whisky in 4:01 in this episode (not the first time I'm hearing it here but I cant find it and I'm very curios)
