Opening a bottle of 2009 Cask Strength batch 1 for 10mins, very strong sprit smell. No toffee no honey yet. After adding a few drops of water, I am now slowly finiding the hint of methol and herbal scen. Still sour, spirity, manuka honey. Much Less fruit, sautants, sweetness. Thank you Ralfy. Benromach a very unique distillery. l

Had this sitting in my cupboard 6 months, and I should've opened it up soooner - what a dram! Full of character, complexity and it suits my palate down to a tee. Beautiful stuff, and that hint of smoke in it really adds extra depth to this. Highly recommended.

It’s 2022 and I’m Drinking a benromach batch 1 bottled in 2018 and distilled in 2007 and it took me a good three or four glasses to get used to it. The first glass was so Smokey but now the nuances and subtleties come through and it’s amazing. No easy access Scotch not for everyone, but rewarding if you follow through!

Hi Ralfy! I just was given (for Fathers Day) Benromach Cask strength 57.6% distilled 2009 , bottled 2020 (therefore 11years old?). Big dram! On the nose - very gentle and underwhelming. Taste neat - a punch in the face with spirit. A lot of water added over time.... smokey, fruity, bitter ginger, with a really long finish. Not for the faint hearted or the beginner. But an excellent dram! I would give it 87.

Thanks as always for this beautiful video, ralfy. You are a great adviser for me in buying new whisky. Now I got a relatively difficult decision to make, because money is not infinite in my pocket. :) I would like to buy a Benromach (thats the easy part of the story). But I dont know if I start with the "normal" one or the cask strength version? Any advise of you would be very helpful. :)

Hello Ralfy, I am Cesar Augusto, from a little town called Araçatuba, in the State of São Paulo, Brasil, and i like your videos very much. Here in Brasil, about 40, 50 years we have the traditionals blended scotchs like Chivas, Ballantines, J. Walker, Bucchannans, Teacher's, Cutty Sark, Vat 69, etc. and a few years ago we began to receive the single malts and american bourbons in stores online. We can buy them here now. I like whisky very much and my favourites are Highland Park, Laphoaig, Macallan, Talisker and Ardbeg. Congratulations and continue, you are very good. Send me a malt mention, hehehe. Greetings from Cesar.

Hello Ralfy, I was wondering between Benromach 10yo CS 57% and Lagavulin 16yo (or any of the Lagavulin), which one do you personally prefer and which one do you tend to drink and enjoy more? I've had Lagavulin 16yo before and I absolutely love it. After watching your review and doing some research, I'd really like to try Benromach 10yo but I was curious if Benromach might be a better drinking experience than Lagavulin. I understand they're both significantly different scotch's with different flavor/smell characteristics but I wanted to know what your personal opinion is about these two brands. Hope all is well and thank you in advance!

hello, great review! If you don't mind helping me with a decision. Im debating if I should get the Benromach 10 (standard bottling.. not cask strength) or a Lagavulin 8. They are both the same age. Which would you say is the all around more enjoyable malt? Thank!

I bought a bottle of this about 12 months ago and thought it was absolutly terrible, harsh solvent and not much else, however I finished the bottle and it grew on me. Watching this again as I drink the first glass of my second bottle. How wrong can first impressions be ? Maybe because of the cask strength it takes time but this is a fantastic whisky.
@johndeveau9359
@johndeveau9359 7 лет назад
I had the same experience with my first bottle of Glenfarclas 12... Thought it was terrible, and actually told my girlfriend, who also loves scotch, that it was undrinkable! Now it is one of our favorites and always have one on hand! So first impressions can be misleading!
@alexk3088
@alexk3088 6 лет назад
Very interesting. I had a similar experience with a few first tastes of Ralfy-recommended malts. Old Pulteney 12, Highland Park 12, Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban 12, Ardbeg 10 where I worried I'd wasted my money. I learned not to judge from first impressions as they are now among favorites. So many things can affect our perception of whisky (try your favorite dram when you have the flu or a cold). Also they don't all like to be tasted in the same session. Now I always suspend judgement until I've had multiple attempts. Also you experiment with water until you find the sweet spot.
@tyhargett5197
@tyhargett5197 6 лет назад
Alex K Old Pultney 12 took me on a ride. Still not my favorite but good on unique merits. I recently had a bottle of arbeg ugi and thought it had change for the worst from 2 years ago. I still think it has, but by the end of the bottle I was enjoying the flavor a lot more. It ended up being a favorite of the last 9 monthd of tasting. Take your time, experiment, finish the bottle, then draw conclusions.
@alexk3088
@alexk3088 6 лет назад
Ty, me too. In my case I happened to buy Highland Park 12 and OP 12 at the same time after catching up on some of "Ralfy recommended" videos. I didn't know better about peat, so tried them both in the same session, starting with HP. And even going back and forth. Somehow this accentuated a really nasty vegetal (celery) note, which was repulsive at the time. Having come back to them separately and with my palate in better mood, HP12 is now my favorite mildly peated malt. And OP12 on most occasions comes across sweet and pleasant and older than its age. I've also given it as gift and offered it to malt newbies, always a hit. And being the cheapest 12-year old malt in my area it's become my benchmark of worth/value. That and the Speyburn 10 (both are 43% in the US). I always ask myself: would I rather buy it for $30 or some other bottle for more? I only spend more when there are compelling reasons - higher abv, no chill filtration, etc. But the main lesson is to be mindful of your palate's current "mood" and not judging by first impressions alone. Right now my least favorite malts are not those that seemed harsh initially, but those that are too plain and simple - Glenfiddich 12 and Singleton of Glendullan 12 for me. Also Tomintoul 10, but I got mine on sale, so no regrets. But wouldn't buy over Speyburn 10.

As I didn't have ralfys whisky of 2014 I poured myself a glass of ralfys whisky of the year 2013, which I enjoyed very much. For me another good example of this extra-quality of cask strenghth versions is Laphroaig 10yo cs which I found much better than the normal 10yo.
@antoinem9411
@antoinem9411 9 лет назад
Slainte Mhath im not sure , but the talk is that Laph 10 CS simply comes from better casks, with some higher amount of Sherry casks involved. well the price has to be justified somewhere i guess. best to grab the 10 CS as soon as it comes out. the longer it stays in the shops , the more expensive it gets until it sells out completely.

Laphroaig 10yo CS is definetly way more flavour intense than the 40% version. But the 40% is awesome quality for the money and after all these years still my favourite everyday dram. Imho Laphroaig is still delivering serious maltiness :) I really hope they continue selling the 10yo without replacing it with this pittyful select version..

@scottjeffery6089 9 лет назад
Hey Ralfy I don't know if this has been covered by you before, but it'd be nice if more people learned how some whisky drinking countries have far higher taxation on alcoholic beverages that exceed 50% alcohol. Many of us over in the States will see Laphroaig 10 vs. Laphroaig 10 CS to be an incredibly big difference in price for only so much extra abv. Of course you can factor in how the CS is going to be of smaller batches and all that, but I was unaware for many years that the American gov't is essentially charging these distillers an arm and a leg to put out the higher abv products.

They now have a cask strength version distilled in 2008 & bottled in 2019 which they have apparently named batch 1. with almost 11 years in the cask, I think the taste will be similar to what you have described, but probably an extra year is a way to reach the richness & consistency of the previous versions... I recently bought one(here in Canada) and I will soon open it up...I would love a re-review of this if possible... and also please make a video on the Gooderham and Worts 49 wellington 19 years old...if possible... #love and respect to sir ralfy! slainte!

I doubt that two bottles taken from the same cask, at the same time, but one diluted to 40% by the distiller, and the other left at cask strength and diluted by the consumer at home would have any taste difference at all. However, given the price premium, I bet the distiller spent a bit more time picking the better casks to bottle and justify that price premium, and that would explain the difference in taste. 12:00 - of course, even though it has an age statement of 10 yo, we have no idea how much older whisky has been added.

frankg2003 It does seem odd, but your right basically every province runs their own version of the NYSE. Alberta is the most free of all provinces, the retail and importation side has been private for 22 years although all products which private distributors import must pass through the main bonded warehouse run under contract via the provincial government. Alberta is somewhat of a Scotch and whisky test market for many N.American bound products. It's also a bit of a dumping ground for products which don't sell well or have been collecting dust in other provinces even outside of Canada too.

So strange; we came here from the review of the 43% 10 year old and more or less in the first sentence you thanked the 'Krolls.' Our surname is Croll. It was almost like you were talking to us...

Hello, Ralfy. I found in the internet Robert Burns 12 years old blended whisky. Is it real? I found no information about it, exept photo on "Master of Malt".

Wayfarer8, I know it's 2 years later, but check the wiki page of the Arran distillery, they own the right to label Robert Burns' name on whisky.

Hello *****. Huge fan from the U.S., first time caller, haha. I'm traveling to the British Isles in 2016 for a wedding. I have to choose one (or maybe 2 or 3 -- if I can convince the missus) Single Malt distillery to go to in my short trip. What advice could you give for choosing? With over 160, I'm like a deer in headlights. Glenfiddich is the largest and independent. Lagavulin is so very well renowned and we'll get to see Islay. Or maybe I should pick a smaller-volume brand that we can't get in America. I'm overwhelmed. Any advice you could give me would be much appreciated. You can write on here or send a message through Twitter:@akendeall or through G+/g-chat. Thank you! Aaron
