. . . a hidden surprise from the Independent bottlers Adelphi.
Characterful, quality version of an old classic malt.

Adelphi is my favorite Independent bottler, by far... They really bottle a lot of high quality whisky.

I recently bought a bottle of Glen Grant 21yo by Adelphi (cask 141974 for those interested) and it is absolutely fantastic! I got a second bottle of it immediately for long time storage.

Would love to see a review of the official bottling of GlenGrant 16. I'm considering purchasing a bottle (along with some others) when I graduate college. I haven't heard much about it, but saw it at a shop the other day. It peaked my interest.

The name Jeroen is pronounced Yeroon with a rolling r or a more guttural r for hardcore Dutchies! Thanks for your reviews Ralfy, we love it!

I'm partial to a particularly purposeful premiumized presentation with a peripheral palette of pickled pineapple. So I thank you.

What were the whiskies you bought and were disappointed in? Even if you don't provide a detailed review of them it would be informative to know what they were! Thanks for all your hard work!

got myself a clynelish, signatory vintage bottling at 43%, 17 years and VERY light color. I was super interested. turned out that this must have been matured in some kind of pinot noir or chardonnay cask. had to have been. cask #7763. finished the bottle a couple of weeks ago. still not sure what I would have rated it but it was quite interesting. definitely highlighted some different notes in the spirit, and was quite confusing in the beginning. towards the end it was certainly more distinctly scotch and quite more enjoyable. I do not think I would purchase it again, but am quite glad I experienced it. ya know?

Suggestion: Re-review of Lagavulin 16. I got my first bottle of it now in summer 2015 and it wasn't very peaty at all. Subdued. Went online and found some recent similar comments. Would be very interested to hear Ralfy's thoughts on this classic malt, the 2015 version.

Interestingly enough Ralfy. I have an unopened bottle of S.M.W.S.( 9.96) 23 year old in the cupboard. Your review is really tempting me to open it, I have read though that Glen Grant Whiskies, over 20 years old are very different in character, to younger versions?

John Henfrey . . . they are, GG's age very well, depending on the cask !

Ralfy, I enjoyed the chat about Independent Bottlers - a subject dear to my heart. Quick question - do the independents supply the distilleries with the casks to be used, or do they choose from what the Distillery offers them for purchase? Alternatively, is it something that is commissioned / ordered in advance, or do all the bottlers bid for the casks being offered on the open market? Thanks again, malt mate. I'd certainly appreciate if you can point me in the right direction to read more.
@thewhiskybothy
@thewhiskybothy 9 лет назад
Rob Cappuccio . . . increasingly, Indi's use the casks they receive the spirit in, however, better calibre Indi's check casks and re-cask if necessary.
@thewhiskybothy
@thewhiskybothy 9 лет назад
Rob Cappuccio . . . Indi bottler often source from wholesale warehouse businesses that we rarely hear of. A few Distilleries sell direct to both Indi's and private customers. Costs are going up steeply at the moment for cask purchasing.

Some things are so bad that they shouldn't be inflicted on anyone! Fortunately, I haven't bought a whiskey that bad yet.

A beginner's question. I now have the time and the money to learn the finer points of tasting whisky. From your blogs.it's not the alcohol I want to indulge.It seems to me, I have to water it and let it alcohol dissipate.So I can taste what kind of cask it was in?. If that is the case. It's Brilliant.all these's years. I went for quantity, not quality.

Perhaps you've answered this before somewhere, but have you been able to try the Talisker Dark Storm? It's a duty-free exclusive, so I bought it at the airport when I came back home a week or so ago. It's probably chill filtered and artificially coloured, and it's not age specified, but it's bottled at 45,8%, matured in charred casks, and I thought it was a very nice surprise taste wise.
@thewhiskybothy
@thewhiskybothy 9 лет назад
JohnDoeSchmoe . . . lots of flavour, not so much maturity for the price.

In your review you talked of craft distilleries and I know from previous reviews you also like a wee drop of bourbon from time to time. I got a bottle of 13th Colony Southern Bourbon from a friend from Georgia USA (that's right he carried safely all the way to South Korea for me)and thought it was wonderful stuff from a small craft distillery. I was wondering if you had tried it and if so what you thought of the stuff? Also speaking craft distilleries. What was you opinion of Brewdog moving in the spirit industry? They have some quality and innovative beers, so I will be happy to see what the come up with.

In my whiskygroup the independent bottler The Ultimate (van Wees) is rather popular! They bottle almost all their whisky on 46% alcohol...except a Tamdhu from 65%. Maybe you can review one of these...

Another great malt moment Ralfy...Much thanks! I'm curious about purchasing a young cask (2-3 year old) from an indi and then having them store it for 10 years or so to mature... I'm early on in my research but I'm wondering if you have done this or have any additional info to share? It is a substantial financial as well as time commitment. So I certainly don't want to be hasty opened to ideas and thoughts. Enjoy your day Ralfy!

I've been a bourbon drinker for more than thirty yers but have been Leary about scotch. I have only had blended scotch but have never been happy with them. Most I didn't like. But I am afraid to spend 100 plus dollars on a single malt and find I have the same reaction. Can you recommend something that will be a good transition from bourbon to a single malt for me to try? I don't mind spending the money if I have something that I have a better chance of enjoying.

ferraraphotographics Where are you located? I know in America, there are quite a few excellent scotch single malts between $40 and $60. I find that I quite like local single malts (there are a good number here in Texas), as they fit my palate better (Ranger Creek Rimfire, for example). That said, coming from an American bourbon drinker's perspective, I tried Auchentoshan 12 first. It's relatively cheap, easy to drink, and still a very good whiskey (though it would be better if it weren't so branded).

sickone86 . . . research needs to be done ! ALL Indi bottlers (as well as Official bottlers) will present some less-good stuff. To some extent they are vunerable to the calibre of casks they source.

Bad bottle of whiskey?!! Never Solution: Put it to good use as the solvent to extract fruits for a superb Ralfy Fruit cake. Add a little Jameson's and turn it into an old school Scotch-Irish Fruit cake. Takes a couple months but wow, you don't know fruit cake until you do it with Scotch be it good bad or ugly,

Speaking of good whisky how come they can't coax Jim McQuen to get back to what he did best. All it takes is £££… anybody will come out of retirement if the price is rite and with his results it would be well worth the money spent.
