@@JC-XL Red Label is dreadful. First Scotch I ever drank...and it turned me off to Scotch for years. Tried Chivas and Dewars and found there was much better stuff out there.
I really miss Mr. Luening's quieter, almost whispering delivery of his videos like this one. It weirdly makes the tasting experience more intimate and more of an event.
@@justinrichardson4456 Seeing as he still appears in videos almost daily I'd say there's a good chance he is indeed alive lol. His videos have just changed a bit over the years now that his son has joined him on them.
I agree & like these slightly older videos more than his recent stuff...also like his on target, no-nonsense review style & think he has one of the better palates out there for whiskey...a go-to for me...
@@BV-nx6vq Yes, I agree. I'm happy he has fun with his son on the videos but I also liked the earlier no-nonsense reviews with his own unique style better.
First time getting this version and I must say, It is very smooth with a slight burn. On some ice and nice and chilled it is very nice and well worth the try.
@@yanksrule311 Fantastic value for what you get. The trick with green label is finding it. Costs a third of what Blue label costs and is every bit as good. The Green label also has an age statement on it. 15 years. Excellent blend.
Tough to beat this workhorse 12-year old blended scotch (esp if you like a bit of peat smoke; like I do)...round, smooth, fairly complex (I get smoke, marshmallow, figs, chocolate, vanilla, with orange and lemon citrus in the background) ...good finish...excellent everyday dram...my favorite scotch for under $30...
@@subutaynoyan5372 I haven't had any heavily peated single malts but Teacher's is the blend I like the most, and I suspect it's because of the smokier / peatier malt in the mix.
Loved Hitch, he's truly missed, but truth is his taste in scotch was that of an alcoholic. I have an alcoholic friend or two. Great guys, but I wouldn't take their advice on booze.
Just bought a bottle of this for the first time in 10 years or so. I have to say the 12 year old black label is MUCH better than it used to be. It has a far more consistent and well rounded profile now. Not just a whiff of plums. Very much enjoyed this and thanks to Amazon Prime it arrived 24 hrs after being ordered for £20. Very good value and at that price I prefer it to bourbon.
I’ll do you a favor.. try these whiskies also.. (in order) 1- Chivas 18 2- Coal ila 12 3- Lagavulin 16 < once you reach this “level”, you won’t look back. Enjoy!
I've tried the blue label, xr21 , the macallans and several of the more expensive whiskies. But the Black Label is still a good whiskey for me. Lucky for me !!!
Just bought a bottle of Dewars 12 year old for €21, love it. Had Black label a couple of times, loved it too. It's on special offer as well at €20 so I'm off to get a bottle. A 12 y.o blended whisky shoot off. See if I can decide on a winner. It's dirty work but someone's got too do it.
It's a masterpiece. Having a drink right now. Forever a 10/10. I'm 29 now, post 27 I think it's become a favourite. Beautiful! Less is more guys. Cheers.
Love the Johnnie Walker Black and double black. Honestly the double is great but I prefer the black. It is definitely light and peaty with butterscotch and ofc that fresh sweet fruit.
I tried the red label (which was pretty terrifying) then the black. and it surprised me by how an alcohol could leave a sweet after taste in my tongue... next day, scent remained so I rushed home to sip another am I being too poetic..?
For me, the was big and intense. Campfire and peat being the most prominent flavour. A little bit floral and maybe a slight blood orange. Elegant doesn't spring to mind when I tasted this dram. At its price point, I'd rather have a Chivas Regal 12. But then in my area, I can get an Arran 10 for less than the Black label.
By far my favourite whisky I hope it doesn't go up in price because is definitely worth more. I always buy 5 bottles when is on sale at tesco 🤣🤣🤣 for £25 it's the best you can get at this price
I tried a lot of blends in my whisky career and ended up with 2 I will always go to = JWBL and High Commissioner from Loch Lomond Group ( 1/3 of the price of JWBL )
I have tasted the red label many times and I like it, I really would like to get my hands on the blue label although its expensive, but this black label, is it any good and is it worth the money?
The black label is an upgrade compared to the red label, but also not too complex in taste. For 10 euros more you already get the green label, which is clearly better
If you ever find a bottle of the Green Label somewhere, I think you would be surprised with its quality. Unfortunately they discontinued it just last year I believe.
just tried JWBL for the first time tonight. as far as I am concerned for a 12 year old blended scotch, I was pleasantly surprised. just the right amount of fruitiness and smoke/oak/vanilla. finish was pleasant and no harsh remnants (at least for my taste). it does have an "oak" flavor with a slight smoke that last for proper amount of time.
I always go back and forth with the double black and the black label. I think the double black has a slight edge in my book but I think it's more about preference
I get oxidized red apple black pepper and mild peat smoke touch of vanilla the taste is much better than the nose on this one. Not one of my favorites but worth a try
Excellent review! How would you describe the main differences between the JW Black and the Green? We are relatively new to Whisky tasting and are trying to notice the differences. We have both. Thank you!
The Green is a 100% Malt Whisky from different distilleries. Therefore the Green tastes more like a single Malt than a blend. The Green is more intense, more flavorful and smoother in the end, because the oak does not bite that much.
Black Label is what I buy. I can drink almost as much as I want and not feel sick. Which to me is the true measure of a quality whiskey. I can't stand sweet alcohol and Black Label is not sweet at all. It's hard and smokey and...adult...and I like that. It doesn't seem like something a teen just starting to drink would enjoy or something a woman would like. It seems like a real mans drink you know. Harsh, but not too harsh.
So I've been drink sine 21 and now I'm 38. One thing I've learned that it jus simpler to judge it yourself than to hear someone else's review. Advice tid bits whatever you want to call it. In the end it only you who makes the final decision is it? Or is it not worth it? Jus cuz he likes this Whisky doesn't mean you will
Correct! Ultimately, taste is always subjective, but many people find it interesting to hear other people's opinions on particular whiskies and may consider buying a bottle afterwards.
Hello there I come from kilmarnock where the distillery used to be, I now live in England, I'm drinking black label watching this, it's very fruity like sweet plums, nearly like brandy , I've never tasted scotch like this , I usually go for smoky peaty malts like Blair athol , dalwhinee and blends like teachers and bells.
Just got some Black label yesterday, I don't know if it's me or what but, it just doesn't have the same complexity and mouthfeel I remember. Oh well, still makes me tipsy, so can't complain.
It's because they aren't actually aged anymore, it's all a scam. They use artificial aging, which is basically another name for doing some chemical stuff to it to try to replicate what happens with aging. No one anywhere does natural aging anymore, because the demand is simply too high. Sure they pretend to do real aging, but it's all a front, all for show. They'll show you production videos of them casing up the whiskey in barrels, but that's not what they're selling.
clearevil that's bullshit. A cork doesn't stand for quality, even though it usually indicates a higher priced product. What matters is the content and not the bottle and such
+forestsandman just had some as well, very smooth, I've liked Jack daniels for its unique taste and cost isnt bad at all, but that John Black beats Red by a mile, red is disgusting, And as much as I like Jacks, the paint remover smell/taste is too far present to make it a very smooth drinker like this one, I still like Jacks, but it;d need a glass of ice water to bring the full taste out, not mixed, just a glass on the side for after each mouth or so
+Alexander TheOriginalGreat Black should be consumed straight, and Red is an excellent mixer. Personally, I like the young peatiness of Res on the rocks on in soda, but some people describe it the way you did. That being said, Jack Daniels is a bourbon and these are blended scotches. You shouldn't have to cover up a quality liquor with anything, ice included.
Alexander Sell a lot of "master tasters" actually add a bit of water to quality whiskey though, I dont but to some other whiskeys I add 2 blocks ice and let it sit for seconds then drink it.
My first bottle of Black Label in many years, and there is no smoke. At all. Like the smoke has been blended out. It's okay, but I would have been much better with the Ardbeg 10, which no one seems to have right now.
Blended Scotch exists almost exclusively to be able to get the most yield out of various barrels from multiple distilleries. It has to be colored almost by necessity because it would have an inconsistent color from year to year, season to season, and as much as we want to believe that companies make whisky for the "snobs" like us, the reality is that its a mass market product and the masses don't tolerate inconsistency very much.
Thank you ! I considered this whiskey before this review :) .. The artificial colouring joke was really delicately served :) not offending, but ! ... really informative! thank you!
I don't know if I got a bad batch or if Black Label always tastes like this, but I think it tastes rancid. I normally drink Elijah Craig. I had two drinks of Black Label last night, scotch and water, tasted terrible. This morning my stomach was turning and I had the squirts.
Hi, i really like your reviews and the entrepreneurial spirit with whiskey tasting( pun intended); moreover, the promotion on social media is a great initiative! I wanted some advice, I am a big fan of the taste of black label the smokey/woody flavor is something i love in a whiskey. I wanted your recommendations for whiskeys having similar taste and/or smoothness. I am still young so affording an exorbitantly priced whiskey would be tough. But I would love your suggestions. Thanks!
Recently adored (and drank much of) a bottle of this. Finding a fresh bottle both harsh and with a long sourness. Perhaps it's just my preference to highland whiskeys, but I am getting too much of a firm alcohol taste - even after letting it breathe for 20 minutes. As always - money better spent on Highland Park.
I'm new to the whisky world, but I find the black labbel awful. Couldn't finish my bottle. To agressive, no pleasant at all. In contrat, I liked a lot of glenfiddich 12, laphroaig select, buffalo trace, 4 roses single barrel and the singleton of dufftown (the ones I could taste so far). Great vídeo, nonetheless.
