Its unfortunate that not a lot of people know of Whisper of the Heart compared to other more popular Ghibli Films.

Accented Cinema is becoming one of those few RU-vidrs where I stop everything I'm doing to watch his latest video.

SO THIS IS WHERE THAT LOFI GIF COMES FROM!!! (My mind is hella blown).

As an author, this is my favourite Miyazaki film. I usually revisit it every year or two, and I keep geodes around my desk because of it. Its hard explaining to non-artists that even when you don't appear to be working, your mind is still tossing the stories around, trying to fix them.

I watched this movie during one of my longest stretches of depression. Like her i was trying to write something, to see if i could. Very few movies impacted me the way it did.

"An attempt to be an artist is less about pursuing a dream, and more so about proving you are who you think you are." ... "Finishing an art piece is often like making a call out into the void. What awaits you is often not excitement, but anxiety." ... Thank you for sharing such a deeply reflective piece on one of my favourite films!

Ah, this really came at the right time. Just moments ago I was berating myself, "Why do I even keep a journal if I don't make my deadlines?" My works always expand and it takes longer and longer because I keep polishing it. "It's not good enough, it doesn't flow well. I'm never going to make it in time, I may as well quit." But now I realise I just have to take a break, there's no point in punishing myself. I'll get there when I get there. Thank you so much, Accented Cinema!

this is probably the first time i cried watching a film essay...

The spoiler warning at the beginning motivated me to watch through the movie. I have to say, no regrets. I'm a writer of sorts, and I've actually written a full novel which is now in its editing stages. This movie really, *really* spoke to me, and it's amazing to see a video like this of someone who shares in the same experiences. Our experiences always feel individual, isolated, and in many ways they are; they feel unique because they are unique. But there are common threads that all artists find themselves going through, and it was clear that the people who made this movie knew those threads very well. One of the most enlightening experiences from a movie I've had in a long time, and this video got one of the most well deserved likes I've given in a long time. :D

I watched 'Whisper of the Heart' three years ago when I was 14. I've always wanted to be a writer or maybe a filmmaker, but in my country those kind of jobs aren't the best options economically speaking. Last year I thought that I was convinced that I'd be a book editor because it has more job opportunities but it's still not really good economically, so these last months I kept saying to everyone and tried convincing myself that I would follow architecture. I still have 5 months to decide my career but now that I watched this I feel less convinced than before... I honestly don't know what I am going to do, but your message at the end, even though I started crying, made me feel understood in some kind of way. This film will always be my favorite film ever because I remember relating to it when I watched it for the first time. Even to this day, it still makes me cry. This video is a masterpiece and I want to thank you for this. Really.

My most favorite Ghibli film. Oh my god I cannot express the greatness of this gem

This really hit me hard. As someone who's about to graduate gymnasium and been in animation class for those 3 years because that's all i really wanted to do. This made me think of all the hours i've stayed behind over for the 30 second animation projects that we usually only had about a months time to finish when not counting our regular classes. i'd skip lunch to work if my classmates didn't try to drag me off the computer and i'd stay about to 18:00 because thats when the janitor would throw students out. All this work yet i still have such a long way to improve and all that focus on animation made my general courses so bad that i have to go to community collage to try to fix them and i still don't know if ill be able to have that focus. This really became a rant but what i want to say is that this really does speak to artists, i almost teared up a bit around chapter 3 and i am so glad that you made this video.

I just wanna say thank you, for placing the Kanji of Shizuku's name with her name in english. I had this weird pet peeve when ever I watch japanese tv where they would write out a chinese person's name with katakana and do not take the time to actually display the kanji. It may sound petty of me but, being fluent in japanese, I gain a great amount of information about a person seeing that their names in kanji. You see the effort the parent has placed into that name and the meaning behind it while you can have a grasp of the person's ancestry through their surname. While the person would try and figure out the deeper meaning of their name and may have a likelyhood to alter their life experiences if it were different in any way. It could of had the same kanjis but phonetically pronounced different, or it was pronounced the same but had different kanji. This maybe a behavioural difference that not many other people on earth may share due to linguistical structure of their native tongue. I feel that western names have set names with their own meanings but the infinite arrangement possible with the use of chinese characters and kanji is quite unique. Now with the long winded thank you over, lol. Let me express my own feeling towards this movie. While I had a similar experience as your first viewing, I was much younger but I did have that "craft" I was keen towards, though I may have not realized by then. But every rewatch of this film, my dedication towards my craft strengthens. My favorite quote of the film was the one by "Tim", "The rough stone is inside you. You have to find it and polish it." This line, it speaks to me, it in a way pulls at the heart of a craftsman with in me. Like a craftsman who hone and maintain their tools, an artist needs to hone and polish their skill and tool of the trade. You see it through out the film, Shizuku burning the midnight oil to hone her newly found craft. I'd find myself in a state of meditation when I'm able to do the same as her, getting lost together with your work. Though like her, I find myself with self-doubt, it's a weird balancing act to say the least. Cause what I strive to be is to author my own stories but through drawing and illustrations, well to be simple I want to be a comic artist well a manga artist to be precise. So I need to be capable of conveying a story through my illustrations but I always find myself with being skillful in one area and be rusty on the other and it interchanges all the time. So I get her struggle, where she isn't the sharpest tool in the shed when in comes to academics, but she had a knack for composing lyrics and that in itself is a skill for writing, her ability of word play. It seems that her interests in fiction and her hobby for writing lyrics bonded for her to realize that she wanted to be a writer or atleast give it a shot. In a way, I'm similar on that remark, like any Japanese kid born in modern times, we are flooded with fictional media. Consuming them like everyone else and fantasizing those worlds or even your own and that's it. There's the seed. I started to create my own stories within myself, not really drawing them out. While drawing was my hobby, it was a way to kill time and have fun. And at some point these two hobbies married into a singular dream. In the past I was slightly jealous of Shizuku for having a mentor like figure in the form of Tim. Nudging her towards a craft, and allowing Shizuku to find that opportunity to test herself. "Would my life of played out differently if I had someone like that?" Though that inquiry was posed by me in the past and I feel that I've come to a point in my craft that it was fine with how it played out. You can see how much I relate to this movie and I've already expressed it in words that would convey why.

The only reason i'm trying so hard to avoid watching any film/art from Ghibli, i cannot handle the train of feeling that it brought upon viewers. Even in this video, somehow, i get a glimpse of the feeling train from your narations... Damn, am i too soft ???

I feel you, man. I used you to draw a lot when I was younger, and I still remember the passion and the drive to create just for it's own sake. I miss that sometimes, and now struggle to even start sketches, let alone finish them. But great video! It does a good job of helping explain the experience of being a creative, and funnily enough has arrived at a time where I really could use some motivation to try drawing again.

Omg, I haven't realized it, but I actually fell into the 'Talent' trap, too! When I was growing up, I really liked drawing. My art teachers throughout middle and high school recognised my skills, and they often sign me up for local competitions. It was cool joining the competitions, it made my mother happy and I'm glad I got to show something in me. I'm not sure when it started, but I started to be conscious of my art. I couldn't do what other artists can do, I gravely felt like an imposter. I stopped doing art because whenever I want to start creating something, I start to become distressed and anxious in the process. In my hiatus , I never improved on my skills and techniques so it gradually declined . At the end , I let everyone down especially myself. Many days and years passed, and I kept having ideas in my head but never actually doing it because how ? I felt depressed by the lack of actions and the lack of everything in me. I spiraled down in my negativity . Luckily, I caught myself and I'm starting to climb out of it. I'm slowly starting to relearn the basics and improve . I really want to polish back my neglected gem .

I was just listening to Country Roads when I saw this was uploaded. The couple is so cute as they support each other being artists.

Studio Ghibli's films have always been special in their storytelling and overall beauty. It's one of their distinguishable qualities. You did a great job analyzing and pointing out how the movie can relate to an artist in real life and the hidden messages it tells.

As an artist, this one hit hard. One of my favorites of your essays so far. I had watched the movie before, but didn't connect with it as much as you, but now I want to revisit it. I can relate to a lot of what you say about talent, self-doubt, depression and catharsis. Making art sure isn't easy, regardless of medium.

Every time I feel inadequate about my music, I go back to this video.

When I was so much younger, I remember being very confused watching this film. I thought the character was weird because she didn't look excited when finished her works. It was also confusing for me when she reacted negatively every time people praises her works. but it all make sense now.. Thank you so much for your explanation.. it makes me wants to watch it again but with different perspective now.. Anyway, I really enjoy your explanation on every video you've made. This is such an important message. I've experienced overworking myself to some extent, not killing me thankfully, but I found that the more tasks I gave myself, the farther and farther away I would push people that are truly important to me. I still keep busy, but I do make sure to make time for my loved ones. Success can be replaced, your family and friends can't.

tearing up at work listening to this, i myself am an artist and I trained under a master ceramicists in Japan for 3 years. My sensei and I actually resembled shizuku and Nishi san a lot. He took me in as an his one and only apprentice not because I showed him I had talent but because he knew I had a dream. He always told me that having a dream was the only thing that kept him living. But he wanted to push me towards that dream of becoming an artist. He passed away earlier this year, but I was reminded of the times he watched me just cry after a bad firing or multiple failed attempts on the wheel. I always compared my work to his and it was what taught me the amount of effort and ambitions it takes to step toward your dreams. I really wished I could meet with him after watching this.

I’m very glad I watched this After watching the movie for the first time today through a perspective of someone who doesn’t consider themselves an artist. I saw the theme as learning to appreciate yourself and your work, while at the same time being a romantic movie about novel friendships and the importance of those around you. This video has opened my eyes to a new perspective and, in a way, to a new story within such a wonderful movie. I cannot thank you enough and i can’t wait to watch this movie again.

This has been one of the few RU-vid i have watched in the past few years that has really resonated with me as a person, not just left an impression or made me think about the content but really created a connection between my own experiences and the video. I watched Whisper of the Heart before I started poetry and now I have been writing poems, her situation is relatable. All the things you described are really relatable. I absolutely love the video essay. It showed the movie in a completely different light. I should go and watch Whisper of the Heart when I'm free.

The second this video was uploaded, I had to quit whatever I was doing and watch the film myself, thanks to netflix. I'm a writer. Or at least... I think I am, and something about the work resonated with me. I've finished a novella before, working on a novel currently, and whenever I look back at that finished work, I could only feel contempt. However, as I reread the five first chapters I had written of my new work, I felt... Proud. Like all the hard work paid off. How miles ahead the jump was in quality to my first work. That was 4 months ago. I have yet to finish my current work, always "not in the mood to write", and feeling nothing but doubt for who I truly were. Granted, quarantine had a big hand but there's no excuse. Watching the movie and this retrospective of yours... Made me realize that well... I was afraid to fail. Afraid to put in the hard work again only to ruin a great opening to a story. Not only that, I realized that my horizon had shrunk. The bit where she researched non-fiction stung because I myself realized how sloppy I was when it comes to research. Allergic to hard work, I seem to be. It made me feel like well... I wasn't meant to be a writer. Like I didn't have the hard working bone in me. But well... Realizing where you stand, that you have a long way to go, is the first step in becoming who you want to be. Thank you, for bringing such a great work of art to people's attention. As a fellow artist to another, and a viewer, I wish the very best for you. Edit : "You are not procrastinating. Damn, this is pretty accurate. Just a little while ago I had to take a month or so off of my art work, cause I just felt zapped, I thought I'd lost it for a bit there. But it came back with a bit of rest. Very well made video. I envy the editing skills on display

Right now I'm either in a slump or tired, this video is not motivation nor demoralization it's a realization and it gives me a mix of emotion and a relief that someone knows the feeling of being an artist and shares it to non-artist. The conclusion hit me hard. I'm currently in my final years of my undergraduate program in which I had to extend for another year because I cannot meet the deadline for this year's graduation window as I had to go with my family for a vacation just before the aforementioned assessment deadline. I saw my friends one by one announcing their success in their own final projects while here I am pondering about what I could've done different before all that. My dad really set such a high expectation on me while working on this - he wanted me to cut off all my connections to my online friends (I don't really have IRL friends at home, most of them are campus friends and COVID made sure I can't meet them in person for the last 2 years) when I was working on my project. And then my mom expects me to try to finish a bulk of the work *before* the vacation so I could just "relax" when the time comes....and I only literally had like 4 days at that point. I tried telling my parents that I want to get my ADHD diagnosed given I'm sure I have one as I lacked the ability to focus on important academic matters and so I could get some medical advice in how to focus in the meantime, only for my dad to get mad at me by yelling and gaslighting me by saying "I'm not sick", and it was all just a ruse for me as an excuse to FAIL. Then I just tried pushing myself to do what my dad wanted me to do, directing every single bit of my focus on the assignment for days straight, with only several breaks for minutes or so, and little to no contact with my online friends, no video gaming at all, and so on. The result was me getting vertigo for like a week afterwards. I even tried to continue the project while in vacation, but all in all it was a flop. I didn't finish enough work to be eligible for graduation this year. Told my parents about it and at least they are actually supportive for it still. All of that was like 2 to 3 months ago. I elected to take a 3-month break, but I somehow can't really find a good way to tell that to my dad especially. He expects me to work early on it so I don't have a burden for later. But I think this video contains almost everything that I think should be understood by him, especially when it comes to us artists. We LOVE to create, we would LIKE to achieve what we're expected to. But the most important thing of all: *WE NEED A FUCKING BREAK.*

Finally I found a video about a Ghibli movie with the original japanese audio. I am a brazilian guy and I watched the animations of Ghibli in japanese, so listen to characters talk in english is very strange. Great essay!

Netflix UK released all of Ghibli movies, I watched one movie every night with my family during the Quarantine and we watched whisper of the heart twice. Loved it so much, Thank you so much for making this. I wanted to cry at the end of the video.

I just watched the movie for the first time and it led me here. As a writer, I was blown away how charming yet relatable the characters were and also found it refreshing to see young artists having these problems in a time before the internet. I constantly think about ways the internet has both made being an artist more difficult and easier. On one hand making money using the internet has never been easier in the sense that all the tools are there. On the other, social media has created a pretty toxic environment that potential worsens self-doubt, depression and anxiety whether it’s constantly comparing to other artists’ success or attributing likes/comments/followers to your self-worth. I don’t love the trope that artists have to be “tortured souls” but it really is hard, deep work of self-expression and self-excavating. Taking the journey is just something we have to do because it’s who we are. Anyways thanks for the awesome video!

I'm really happy to see your channel grow over time, and I was genuinely surprised when I noticed that you were well past 100k as of this video. I remember being enchanted by your videos back when you'd just started out, with barely 1k to your name. Really does show how important putting in effort and time is as an artist, and I hope I'll have the privilege to continue enjoying your works as you continue to polish your talent!

As an artist turned engineer this essay really resonates with me. I watched this as a kid in the 90's and saw it through the eyes of a hopeful artist...and now I will have to revisit it. Unfortunately I didn't keep getting up and working at it when I realized I was not s great achiever. But after many years persevering in science, maybe it's time to turn that newfound resolve back toward art. For my own satisfaction.

This is hands down one of the best RU-vid videos i have ever watched. I thank you from the bottom of my heart Accented Cinema; As a fellow artist sometimes i feel inadequate and i feel that i should probably pursue a different career path. But then i remember that as much as it may sound cheesy, that you only live once and why would you spend you're time doing something else. Chase your dreams and live the life you want. Dont settle for anything else. This mindset gets me through a lot sometimes, and i even tear a little knowing how much i want it.

I love the little things about this movie (and plenty others from Ghibli). Like the scene where Seiji says he's going to wait her finish her research at the library. He understands her obsesiveness, he's the same.

Marvelous presentation and analysis of a wonderful lesser appreciated Ghibli gem. As a fellow artist you hit on a lot of emotional pressure points and clearly found the same catharsis I felt when watching this film. Kondo and the team made an amazing work for all of us to feel impassioned by and do the work because it is who we are rather than how we try to appear. Thank you for saying what we all felt when we saw the whole artistic process unravel and embolden Shizuku and us by proxy forever onward with all the freckles and then some.

It's been so long since I watched this film. I used to watch it all the time back in high school and was obsessed with it! Thank you for this video and for bringing back good memories! I should watch this again some time soon! I remember singing Country Roads over and over again!

You put into words what I feel as an artist and what I feel from watching this movie. The scene that always stands out the most to me is when Shizuku is waiting for the Grandfather’s critique. I can’t help but hold my breathe during that scene, because it reminds me of all the breathless, anxious moments while waiting for a critique. I want to hear it, while at the same time dreading the coming sound of the teacher/friends voice. the silence that comes before it is an overwhelming wave of anticipation where the world tunes out. Then, when Shizuku finally bursts, I can breathe and the world comes back into focus. Thank you for such a wonderful video!

As the story never gets old but ages with deeper complexity each time. To hear you make such a heart felt piece of art brought me the same emotions as the film. This film always hits me so hard… I’m an artist trying to make my own graphic novel so I’m constantly writing, drawing, paneling etc. I’ll be thumbnailing hundreds of pages then crying because I get too ambitious, and having to scrap hours and HOURS of heartfelt work… I relate so much to Suzuku’s character, the need to finish this first book no matter what, even if it takes up all my time it’s something I just have to get out of my system. Pushing myself to the max to see how good I ACTUALLY am at my 100% effort. Which is terrifying… Then there are times I think my story is so awesome and I’ll be running around in parks imagining my characters in the world I envision, shaking with excitement because I love stories so much and it’s amazing! And other times I look at my work and think “maybe I’m not as good as I thought…” and I’ll brainstorm and cry my eyes out because nothings working out, other stories just work so much better and I just want to be the best I can possibly be, if my story isn’t perfect then I must suck. Which is a terrible mindset but you know, sometimes that’s just how it feels as an artist and I have to remind myself never to compare myself to others who have more experience. I relate to Suzukus struggle, her love of stories, her fear of showing other people her work and her mindset where she compares herself to people who are “better” and “more accomplished”… Whisper of the Heart is just my entire life right now and every time I watch it there’s such an emotional impact.

This is probably my favourite among all your videos. I am definitely going to share this with my students as the lessons of life you mention can't be emphasised enough. Thank you!

ever since i found (and loved) your channel like a year ago, i saw this video posted, but i didn't want to watch it until i watched the movie, which i haven't done.. until just now. as soon as i finished the movie, i watched this video. this is my favorite video of yours. i am an "artist in training" (a term the movie used, which i love so much because i can't bring myself to call myself an artist -- self doubt, sounds familiar?), and i relate to so much of the movie and this video. thanks to you, i found the movie and much more. this is both inspirational and heartwarming, knowing that we all indeed go through this.
