Studio Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki stand at the forefront of my love for anime. In doing research for another video I found a great documentary called 10 Years With Hayao Miyazaki. There was a story I discovered that fascinated me following Hayao and his son Goro. This video explores that story and the movie that came from it.

"From up on Poppy Hill" is my most favourite Ghibli movie. Although its not one of their biggest hits, it really touched me because it was so realistic and grounded, without the otherwise typical fantasy elements of Ghibli movies. And it was still so touching, even though it was basically just a slice of life anime.

For me, the reason why Im fond of rewatching it is because the setting and environment felt like its own character. I get why some people would find the story bland, but the liveliness of the scenes from the streets, the neighbourhoods, and ESPECIALLY the school is amazing.

I love From Up on Poppy Hill so much. It's beautiful, and the story is quiet yet dramatic. The "everyday" nature of the characters, the exploration of the parentification of teenagers... It's just understated and special in its own way.

I do feel bad for Goro, but I don’t understand why they thought mushing a long series of books with really varying tones was a good idea. Even the best director in the world couldn’t combine them and create a good product. I really firmly believe that if Goro had just chosen one of the books to adapt, or even combine Tehanu and The Other Wind, it would have been a critical success. I know this isn’t the point of the video, but it always bugs me as a big fan of the series. I’m dying for a good adaptation some day.

I'm also of the opinion Goro has more to offer than people give him credit for, but Earwig was just....bad. I legitimately don't know what he was thinking, other than they used him as a scapegoat to test the waters for a 3D Ghibli movie?

I find Earwig better than most things from Woody Allen, and what he's good for is usually pandering to a low standard. But the new wave of cinema came at a time when people were less focused on expecting "I know what is good and I want more of the good", so it was given the pass as refreshing. Most standards just come out of commodifying art, not to say that everything unique is good by the virtue of being novel, but when it comes to "lack" of taste suddenly everybody decides there IS accounting for it. In reality it's just a type of novelty, to bask in how long you can tolerate "good" things until it becomes jut another kitsch because you're getting bored of your arbitrary praise of it. Film is already a cross-media product. The craft of choosing what to ingrain onto film is wholly different art than molding visuals out of nothing, and Earwig really captures something about "the Ghibli style" as an honest adaptation of style into a differnet medium, that would actually be given a PASS in 2D because you honestly just expect more of the same from the same pipeline. It's a lot more thoughtful than video games slapping ona lazy cel-shading effect and get praised for being "timeless" because the audience doesn't have a visual language to understand what biases they should be having AGAINST that. It just isn't "cinematic" in the way that some audiences are conditioned to think is acceptable. The same way I can't finda reason to bother seeing Woody Allen characters meander around, but then again, his style IS to choose hwat to POINT the camera at. Not to craft a visual spectacle out fo nothing like tiresome Marvel superhero films with their canned, disposable shots like epic group pose pan. EArwig is something from both and something from neither, not JUST something falling short of both.

@@Tremere That movie needed an editor, there was a cool story in there but something got lost. Not exactly sure what Goro was thinking but I'm guessing there was production hell due to adapting to a new medium and something had to be pushed out. Which is a shame because the backgrounds that were made for it were really great and captured that ghibli kind of aesthetic.

The Earthsea Quartet is one of my favourite series and to this day I get so mad thinking about Goro's adaptation. Reading the books, I genuinely thought that they'd work brilliantly as an animated film series. It really makes no sense that he tried to mush them all together - look at Howl's Moving Castle, Hayao knew that adapting the first book was the right move. I'll forever be mad, not because it's a bad film, but because of the wasted potential for what could have been an amazing adaptation. Poor Ursula agreed to hand her baby over to the trusted hands of Hayao and that's what she got.

when I was in my early teens and just started exploring ghibli, I stumbled upon Up on Poppy Hill and was mesmerized by its quiet subtleties. At the time I didn't know about the stark difference between Goro and Hayao or that it was Goro that directed this film, so I could safely say that when I talk about this, I talk about an unbiased opinion. But this was a masterpiece of its own in my book and honestly its really heartwarming to know that others share my opinion of this too. Great video!

Honestly I can't imagine being Miyazaki's son. I was the son of a really good welder/metal worker/handyman, and as a computer nerd I could definitely feel the judgement growing up sometimes. Goro has made some stinkers (I'm looking at you Earwig and the Witch, but the guy has passion at least. I really loved From Up on Poppy Hill and I didn't even know Goro was the Director. I loved how down to earth it was compared to most Ghibli stories.

Miyazaki has been successful. We shouldn't credit his psychotic work ethic for that success or suggest that it's made his life better or would make our life better by adopting it. For every Miyazaki there are 100,000 middle managers with the same obsessive tendencies who aren't successful and just waste their team's time or endlessly punish them. I just can't believe that his vision required this kind of grind. Maybe when most of these films were made, the commitment was more justifiable, but now that tools exist to reduce the busy work I just see managers reconstructing that 20 year old grind because it's in the fiber of our business culture to toil.

@@jewymcjewjew9939 I haven't had a boss for five years, and that was just for a couple months to get out of the house while my alcoholic ex was moving out. Other than that I haven't had a boss for ten years. Ayn Rand should have taught you already that you don't need an employer or a (money printed) marketplace to be an industrious, productive and happy person. And you certainly don't need to toil for somebody else's narrow vision about how to work.

@@jewymcjewjew9939 hi thats me you just end up hurting yourself, i drew and drew and drew until my hand now has a ganglion and i cant even do as much as before draw as much, and i did just start to draw with my left hand, i only stopped when both my hands hurt i relised how much i needed them and i let myself take breaks, for weeks if i need too, i find my creativity builds up and i make better art, i love Miyazaki but hes a grumpy workaholic and should be something we apprestate and not strive for, im obsessed with art id die for it but whats the point if you turn it into a chore like that

This kind of system probably ruined a lot more than it made and people defending this kind of ethics are just so privileged that they don't understand what feeling overworked and helpless feels like. I said this being an animation student who's already dealing with deadlines and stress daily, and that doesn't compare to what people who work in this types of studios feel.

I love Hayao as an artist, and he undoubtedly deserves a lot of credit for pulling together some of the best stories told in his lifetime that will live on long after he’s no longer with us. However, it’s always sad to see that he runs/ran his studio as something of a control-freak and didn’t allow for others to learn and grow along with him, especially his own son. I think that in years to come Goro will end up being an incredible director, both because of and despite who his father is

Actually I always tend to forget that Ghibli movies are mostly fantasy films because my favorite scenes are always the mundane ones. Like Chihiro riding the train or the Kids from Totoro hiding from the police on the back of the moving truck while waving to others at the beginning of the movie. I haven’t seen From up on Poppy Hill but I definitely will now.

Thank you for this thought-provoking video! I think that in From Up On Poppy Hill, Goro-san consciously subverts his father's favorite themes: 'Flight and Departure' -- which could also be framed as Discovery and Farewell, from a plot perspective. Umi flies her naval flags to greet her father, in an empty hope of his return, who is deeply sunken below the waves. Her life is anchored to her port town from beginning to end, leaving only to visit a Tokyo civil office of education (the only destination, I imagine, more humdrum than a teenager's hometown), and the most thrilling highs involve her bringing her domestic talents to the feral clubhouse, and running on foot, hand-in-hand, the same road she tread every day. While Umi yearns for some closure with her father, and languishes in her new love withering before it could fully bloom, her absentee mother returns. The board chairman visits the flourishing (and unflying) clubhouse, and delivers it from demolition. And she is fully reconciled with Shun, the brightest horizon of her life, by their fathers' best friend, who, delaying his departure, stands as their fathers' last testament of love and affirmation for who've they've grown to be. From up on Poppy Hill stands apart for 'Enduring and Reunion'. Hayao had spent his professional life apart from his son, and to come into his own, Goro needed to do the same. Perhaps Goro became so focused on filtering out his father's shadow from his work, that he had forgot what it was like to grow up in his light. Hayao reminded him of this light with a single image, as it seems his pictures were worth more than his words: "Umi keeps her chin up, eyes on the horizon, and walks confidently, especially when she's alone. Do the same." And he did.

I also had a very complex, exceptional, and very critical father, though he did slip-up and compliment me once when I was thirteen. At some point, one learns to observe his parents objectively, learn from the ways they succeeded or failed to resolve the constellation of existential circumstances that they inherited, and live an authentic life independent of their journeys. In most ways, I was a very different kind of parent from what might have been expected given my upbringing, but, better, by what criteria and in whose judgement? Goro seems to have found his way. I see this video essay as a salute to him for catching the diamonds however Hayao presented them.

From Up On Poppy Hill *is* actually my favorite Studio Ghibli film. I think it's the sense of place that pushes it over the edge for me. The town feels like a character in the story, and being so grounded and realistic, it's that much more impactful for me. Thanks for shedding some light on the background behind the movie.

As great as Miyazaki is as a director, as praised as his works are, it is mind boggling that he never got a disciple or a successor to capture and reproduce his trademark style, his approach to the storytelling. I mean, a son doesn't have to have the same talent or same dedication - but how a bunch of animators work with a man for decades day after day and never learn from him? I sense some sort of hidden grim force at work here, almost as if Miyazaki takes effort to keep his genius to himself alone.

Isao Takahata is his senior and it to him that Miyazaki learned a lot of his craft and his discipline to produce his vision. Miyazaki was training his top animator and character designer Yoshifumi Kondō, to take over from him as director, but Kondō died of cancer after finishing his only directorial film ‘Whispers of the heart’. The movie ‘Spirited away’ was being directed by new, younger director, but Miyazaki found the initial work done quite disappointing and have himself back as director of the film and redo it. It’s very hard if you have very strict sense of vision and ideas to simply let go. To an Artist it’s his life, it’s whats define him and his legacy. If there would be someone to inherit his legacy it’ll be from the newer hot blooded artists that were inspired by his work, it’s from there they have to fight one another to get to the top, the world is quite unforgiving to the mediocre. That’s why we have former Ghibli animator like Hideaki Anno or fans like Mamoru Hosoda and Makoto Shinkai who came from different studios.

Ghibli is a relatively small studio with a small full time staff. They rely on an army of contracted workers to help with their features. They can’t release movies at the same rate as Disney or Pixar, which severely limits opportunities for veteran staff to lead projects their own. That’s one of the reasons why Studio Ponoc was founded.

I'm always shocked to hear that Tales from Earthsea is so disliked... I was filled with so much emotion when I first saw it, unlike anything before. The movie stirred my heart for weeks and weeks, and it's one of my most favourite movies of all time 🙏

From Upon Poppy Hill is probably my favorite Ghibli film. I've seen most of them at this point, and as much as I adore the classics, there's something about Poppy Hill that just pulls me back again and again. It's like my ultimate comfort film. I hope Goro Miyazaki continues to direct films in the future, because it will be heartbreaking if his storytelling languishes in the shadow of his father and works like Earwig and the Witch.

I watched this film a while ago, and it became one of my personal favorites. At the time when I told friends about it, I remember saying that it somehow had a very different feel from the other ghibli movies. I had no idea Miyazaki's son was involved. Really interesting backstory!

Honestly i would dig if for future adaptations Ghibli makes, Hayao makes a single illustration which Goro uses as a starting point for everything else (screenplay, storyboard, directing, etc). It may sound silly, but it could be educational for Goro, without Miyazaki feeling he's leading his son by the hand. Or idk, i always thought Goro would be a neat backgrounds art director (considering his skill in architecture), yet smh everyone wants him to be a top tier movie director from the get go. 😅 Anyways, my 2 cents here, yw

I’ve always been vaguely aware of Miyazaki’s rocky relationship with his son, but the way you managed to frame such an interesting and emotional narrative in eleven minutes has left me impressed as well as with a desire to rewatch From Up on Poppy Hill! Struggling with creativity and finding yourself within a medium is something that resonates with me, and hearing about Goro's story, I can see myself in him in a lot of ways. It was deeply moving. I too, root for Goro. His movies are distinctly his. It's difficult to pinpoint why they feel the way they do, because there are many elements to take into account (such has the preexisting novels for Tales of Earthsea), but they scream of himself. C'mon, his first movie being about a dying world and a young man in depression, running away after stabbing his king father? I'm rooting for you, Goro.

Thanks for mentioning this part. I once watched this document when I was a primary school student and it's so inspiring that I will remember this forever. Back then I was so into the Ghibi world and works of Miyazaki Hayao, wondering what made his works so good and impressive. And to me this is the answer. How he changed the tone of the movie, overcame the struggling of the his son and the team by just a single picture. The main character, the stage, the world of the Poppy hill came to life with just a small but important touch. And this is what made him so great. This is the proof of him being a legendary animator. It is not about drawing extremly complex objects and fancy pictures, but showing how characters think and live by paying attention on small details. How a character walks, what does a character choose, what are they looking at, their logic and reasons behind it. These make characters and the world come alive, thus move and touch people's heart.

Phenomenal video. I was tearing up towards the end. I was unfamiliar with Goro's story as I've only seen Ghibli movies from a distance having only watched two movies a long time ago. But your video highlighted a beauty in these films that I want to know more about. This video felt like Goro was a character in a story, as well as you being a character in a story. Both of which changed by the end of the video. idk if any of this makes sense but your video felt very special.

From Up on Poppy Hill is a wonderful film. Its one of my favorite Ghibili movies. Its so charming and heartfelt. It honestly brothers me a lot that Hayao was so dismissive of it. Goro did a wonderful job.

From Up on Poppy Hill was my sisters favorite film my entire life growing up. I never got to watch it with her but i have some very fond memories of her crying over the film. I honestly didnt even know it was an anime until i saw this video. Im glad to see she had good taste.

Wonderful video. From Up on Poppy Hill is either my 2nd or 3rd favorite Ghibli film and its nice to see some positive chatter about it. To me, the appeal of the film is how events that are seemingly mundane in the grand scheme are made to be be as grand as the big plots of other Ghibli films. Especially since the characters are teenagers, stuff like their clubhouse shutting down and having a crush does seem that important and high stakes as, say, the god of the forest dying. Its very human and really respectful of the characters.

Funny enough the Ghibili movies that are top in my list are not directed by Hayao Miyazaki haha. They are From Up on Poppy Hill, Only Yesterday, and Tales of Princess Kaguya. I just prefer these movies because they tend to tackle more real life problems which make them relatable as oppose to the Hayao Miyazaki movies which can be too "fiction" if you know what I mean. I hope Goro knows that he is special in his own ways.

Man. I had no idea that movie had so much boiling under the surface. My only issue with the film is that the conflict could have been less creepy. Instead of choosing what they chose, have Shun move far away. That way everything else would play out relatively unchanged, but have Shun's father get a job with the captain they met with at the end. Overall, it was a lovely film and one of my favorites for a while.

When Netflix over here across the pond where I live had almost all of Studio Ghibli films, I watched them all. From Up on Poppy Hill became one of my favorites, maybe even my favorite. It launched me into watching the ones geared for an older audience. Whispers of the Heart being one of them. So, if you asked me to rank them all… still not have seen them all, I would never even try. I feel they are all special in their own right. Yes, there are those I like better than others, but each has its own personality. It is too bad that his son only did two films. Though working under your father in such a creative occupation must have been extremely difficult.

If my dad was Miyazaki, I feel like directing would be on the bottom of my list as a job😂 But it is understandable to idolize your parent and wanting to be like them too. It's just sad that life isn't that simple with expectations and reality come crashing into your dreams, especially it affecting your relationship with your parent too.

I’m so glad somebody is finally bringing to light my FAVORITE Ghibli movie of all time (although the cat returns is pretty much on par) I never found myself attracted to fantasy dramas so I don’t really resonate with a lot of ghibli movies, but from up on poppy hill is so magical in its own quiet and reserved way. Nothing about it is particularly breathtaking or awe-inspiring or life changing. It’s simple, and there’s a lot of beauty in that simplicity of “boy meets girl, boy might be girls brother, boy and girl end up together” you know?(lol) I think the music and character design from the movie has to be my favorite and I just feel every single emotion in it. Especially compared to other Miyazaki works where I feel the emotions, expressions, and situations can really fall flat and not inspire any real feelings; I feel so frustrated and happy and tired and curious alongside every character in that film. So, yeah, long winded way to say that I love this movie and have always felt a frustration towards Miyazaki’s attitude regarding his son’s work. I get he’s a renowned director all over the world and is worth billions, but what good is that to me when none of his work previous has ever made me laugh?

Me , my sister , and my mom all binged every studio ghibli movie throughout a week and our definitive favorites were From Up on Poppy Hill and Howl’s Moving Castle Tales from Earthsea were also really liked by specifically me.

I don't care all that much about formal categories or popular opinion, I just like what I like and love what I love. Ghibli is a great studio and "From up on Poppy Hill" is a great film that touches me deeply every time I watch it. It is gentle and loving in a way I think that Hayao could never have accomplished, and this distinction is deep and meaningful rather than academic or cosmetic. Now I will love the film even more thanks to your analysis, Pey, because your video adds more pathos to the film's being than I had previously discerned. Thank you!

I just say from up on poppy hill last night and this video makes me love it so much more!! The story behind Goro and Hayao’s relationship could be a feature film itself lol (bro goes thru more trials and tribulations than the average ghibli mc for sure) 😭 i love how the film plays on Ghibli’s strengths while bringing a fresh focus onto the everyday.. there’s that sense of fantastical discovery (ie. the clubhouse feeling like it’s own character) even in a setting full of comfort and nostalgia (ie. Umi’s routines of cooking, raising the flags)

_From Up on Poppy Hill_ remains one of my favorite Ghibli films, and I wish it'd get more attention. It's a very human story that swept me up in its world and characters right from the start. As for Goro, I can't begin to imagine the weight he carries on his shoulders. But despite it all, he made something truly his own... beautiful and reflective.

Goro has lived under his father's shadow, both a blessing and a "curse". Sure, Tales of Earthsea wasn't briliant like Nausicaa, Mononoke or Chihiro..But I wonder, had we not been comparing his work to literally one of the greatest directors of all time, maybe we would be able to see much more value to Goro's work. We judge him harshly, and yet, I (an artist) know that I will never reach Goro's level. And I'm ok with that.

I suprised how deep the process of movie From Up on Poppy hill. Actually that movie is my top favorite ghibli movie. The most beautiful is Spirited Away, but my favorite is From Up on Poppy Hill. Good job Goro! Thanks for the movie!

I will say it like some brave people around Miyazaki said it once. Earth Sea was a prime example of Miyazaki failing to be a father and a mentor to his son to help him grow into the role and make honest mistakes while learning as much as possible. Had he been more humble and teaching it likely wouldn't have failed as hard as it did. Though I guess Miyazaki simply can't do that very easily when it comes to filmmaking XD

Thx for the detailed backgrounder. Goro was under massive pressure, to be sure. And it's a story played out a thousand times or more, as the children of the famous - especialy for talent-based productivity ... well the expectations must be huge. How many have fallen under that landslide? Or simply found their own 'magic' despite it? They are stories seldom told.

I blame Suzuki more than anyone for this mess. If he saw potential in Goro, then he should have stepped in and tried to nurture his talent; have him participate in lower tier roles in various movies to build up experience instead of just thrusting him into the director’s seat. I can see how that could build up resentment to other more experienced artists in Ghibli, so I see why Miyazaki was so against it, though he went about it the wrong way. I feel like if goro had more experience then he could’ve created a more wonderful film.

Miyazaki not letting others and his son to learn and grow kind of reminds me of my dad but idk if the intentions are similar or different. My dad does it cuz he's jealous and insecure. Narcissistic. Regardless I've got more education than he is. I can't pinpoint on Miyazaki's case.

From Up on Poppy Hill was really good to me. I watched all the Ghibli movies once. And I noticed that the majority of these movies is very "heavy" to watch. They are very emotionally impactful and hard to take in more than once. I think perhaps Kiki's delivery service might be an exception. It was very easy and fun to watch that one. But the rest of the movies gave me so much emotional trauma in some way. Be it the incredibly disturbing feeling of getting lost, stuck or captured or the feelings of loss and death; they are all so heavy to watch. From Up on Poppy Hill is somewhat mundane and not so over the top, like the rest of the films are, which puts that movie somewhere between Kiki and the rest of the movies in rewatchability. I may just have to rewatch it at some point. :) Maybe there are details I missed the first time...

As someone who isn't artistic or detail oriented, I could really use a more in depth look at why this particular illustration was better or more inspirational than the other art that had been produced so far. At a glance it looks nice, but I have no idea what makes it "better" than Goro's drawings.

One of the main benefits of anime and animation is the ability to exaggerate movement or actions to indicate a point to the audience. For example when Ponyo hugs sosuke Miyazaki's 2008 film he has sosukes clothes flex out and his body squeeze under the pressure of Ponyo's hug, it's exaugurated and unrealistic but it shows the audience something about her character. In the drawing he sent Gora for From Up on Poppy Hill he once again exaugurated two things in an almost unrealistic sense. First Umi is walking leaning forward and with large strides, steps bigger than what you would normally animate, this demonstrates that she is a determined character, the entire opening sequence of the film is actually meant to highlight this fact. By embracing anime as a medium you can make changes to human actions that represent a more realistic feeling. Like that quote, "art is a lie that tells the truth". If you analyze a lot of miyazki's simple animations, you'll actually find a huge amount of expression in the way they're executed, this isn't uncommon in anime and animation, but Miyazaki's style does feel distinct

Hot take I actually really like the earthsea film, yeah it's a bit messy but the vibes are great, the art is fantastic and it left me curious about the world and characters (it's why I then went away and read the books)
