Whit Stillman interview (1998) 

He interviewed him twice before this and he can't remember his fucking name, this guy is hopeless, he is like amnesic or something. But he's great though, gotta love him.

Eh. I can understand. I blank out on people's names all the time. Even the names of directors of my favorite films. It makes me feel stupid. But I'm told it can be due to a lack of sleep or dietary choices? I dunno.

Quite possible he thought the average audience member wouldn't know PTA by name, and also didn't want to say "Paul Thomas Anderson, who made Boogie Nights," because that sounds like he's presuming Stillman wouldn't know that. Tough line to walk there.

He kind of has the same expression John Malkovich often has. I think it's the face an intelligent person makes when they're a little nervous about what you're going to ask them.

I doubt that he's really judgemental of poor people. He's a bona-fide WASP, and he looks like it. We tend to equate that culture with class snobbery, for good reason. I think that's why he "looks like he's silently judging poor people." Not all WASPs are classist assholes though, best not to judge people by their background before knowing them.

@@balthasardenner5216 My comment was a little tongue-in-cheek. I made that remark not only based on his look but the content of his films. It definitely exudes a slightly more upper-crust mentality personified by many of his characters, particularly those in Metropolitan. It just makes me laugh to see some people who want to make films and art yet seem to be completely disconnected from the average person. Not saying that being an average person is a criteria for making art, just that it's funny to see how radically different some can be perceived by others.
