Are you contradicting me or agreeing with me? No matter how many peoples Rome conquered I doubt they were ever considered "real" Romans. They would also be expected to follow whatever laws and customs *Rome* decreed and could only maintain local identities/cultures to the extent they didn't interefere with Roman control. I think the reason many empires crumbled was the dilution and fragmentation resulting from trying to unite too many peoples under one umbrella. We are making the same mistake.
This problem may be of political science, rather than sociology. When a mob get together, set up a boundary and call themselves a state based upon the shared views and beliefs of that mob, is it not fair that the mob have the right to reject those who wish to immigrate that stand for beliefs, views, opinions that are contrary to those who worked to create the state? Citing, perhaps rightly, that there is a better place for those people? The question is - is mob rule legitimate in this instance?

@thegamblergambler in the end Mabo won that case (sadly he wasn't around to see it) but instead of overturning the court's decision Hawke decided to enshrine it in law so there are quite a few areas of Australia that are owned by the Natives (the entire city of Perth is a good example)
Its funny to think that opinions in Australia really haven't changed that much since then. Consider the Cronulla Riots, Siev X disaster, our refugee policies. Revolting.

@thegamblergambler they can't and you know why because they already have sovereignty (look up the Native Title Act or the Mabo case) and the World court is not a legally binding court no country actually has to follow their orders
@thegamblergambler if we were to negotiate with every tribe say one tribe a week it would be about 2015 before we got through them all and I hope you realise that there are courts in Australia that deal with native offenders and punish them according to tribal law (the defendant has to have plead guilty at a mention hearing prior)
@thegamblergambler but much like the UN its only a consultative body and as such only has power inside each country if each country allows it if the UN wanted to send peacekeepers to East Timor in Australia but wanted to station them in Australia even if the UN was unanimous in their decision Australia as a sovereign nation has the right to refuse.

@thegamblergambler but unlike the Maori's of New Zealand the Australian Aboriginals do not speak the same language nor do a lot of them want to have anything to do with with other tribes for example the Wathuarong's do not associate with the Djab Wurrung's nor were they ever represented by a single body.
