Haha, not for me, I just strolled down to the comments to say "Don't you wish they were better written?" gotta love Keith, and saw your comment. Guess I was a couple of years too late.

Regarding the date of the first document: The 6th of march is obviously not a Monday every year. In Herschel's time as an astronomer, in the following years the 6th of march were a Monday: (18), 20, 26, 29, 35, 37, 43, 46, 48, 54, 65, (71) If we can assume that he was President of the Royal Astronomical Society while receiving the letter, the year would have to be either 29 or 48. If anybody wants to dig a bit, feel free to do so :) EDIT: 35 & 37 are unlikely, since Herschel was in southern Africa from 33 to 38.

That list of years doesn't seem to be correct. The 6th of March in 29, 35 and 46 are on a Friday. I think you mixed them up with the 6th of April in those years, which is on a Monday. That does mean it almost has to be 48 :)
@FridgeEating

Why are 29, 35, and 46 on your list? Those were Fridays.

There's a limited number of years that Monday, March 6 could be. Within John Herschel's lifetime (1792-1871), we have 1797, 1809, 1815, 1820, 1826, 1837, 1843, 1848, 1854, 1865, 1871 (just a couple months before his death). However, then we can consider that D'Urban died in 1849, eliminating many of the later years. I'll also make the assumption that this was at least after 1816, when Herschel took up astronomy (according to Wikipedia). This leaves, 1820, 1826, 1837, 1843, and 1848. Still several possible dates, and someone with better knowledge of Herschel's life (or more time to Google things) could probably narrow further.
@dhkatz_
@dhkatz_ 6 лет назад
Well seeing as Herschel was President of the Royal Society in 1848 that might make sense.

I agree with Brady that the use of the black border is quite interesting. I know it was probably just a formality more than anything else, but you could also see it as a neat way of communicating to the recipient of the letter that "Hey, just so you know, I am in mourning, my view of the world is currently distorted in this particular way, so please cut me some slack."
@16m49x3
@16m49x3 6 лет назад
Imagine if every facebook post by someone in mourning had a black border?
@puupipo
@puupipo 6 лет назад
Right! Or what if every drunk text had a red border?
@16m49x3
@16m49x3 6 лет назад
Will they add that themselves or does the phone need a breath analyzer?
@puupipo
@puupipo 6 лет назад
Perhaps a location-based approach could work? When the phone checks your location and discovers that you are in a nightclub it automatically applies the red border. Or something like that. I admit, the execution needs a bit more work before we're ready to launch our game-changing tech startup.
@dansv1
@dansv1 6 лет назад
Black borders envelopes also warned the recipient that news of a death was enclosed.

Brady, when you're next down the Royal Society, do they have anything on the colour of tennis balls?
@Nilguiri
@Nilguiri 6 лет назад
Roger Federer (incorrectly) said that he thinks that they are yellow, although they are green as any fule kno.
@Nilguiri
@Nilguiri 6 лет назад
Yellow is made from red and green (#ffff00), so anything with less red than green, such as tennis balls, is at least slightly green. To be yellow, they would have to have equal amounts of red and green, and they don't; they all have more green than red. I have just checked with a colour eye-dropper on photos of tennis balls. So I would say that they are greeny yellow. Or yellowy green if you prefer. Cheers.
@HermanVonPetri

The color is called chartreuse.

I wonder why we don't still use a black border for mourning on correspondence? What time period was that actually a practice?
@Shadow81989
@Shadow81989 6 лет назад
Well, the whole mourning time isn't really a thing anymore, is it? At least for my country (Germany) I think this tradition has stopped about 50 years ago. We still use this kind of paper for invitations to a funeral service though, and probably for other, similar things - but nowadays only for things that actually have something to do with death, not just for everything during a set period...

The white gloves of destiny is a very cool section, but I wonder if the cards in the front and back, specially from drawers closest to the corners are going to have equal chance of being picked. Perhaps we're losing a few treasures because of unlucky placement decisions! Isn't there any equipment in the Royal Society that was used as a form of lottery or random generator in the past that could help with that?

Wait are any of the cards they pick from recent enough to point to the digital archives, or are they only for the physical ones? Because that would be amazing if someone picked an email from Brady!
@konzetsu6068
@konzetsu6068 6 лет назад
nah, the index itself was digitized quite a while ago from what i understand, so it would stand to reason that no emails are in there. and going through access tables (or whatever they're using) aren't as visually interesting as digging in drawers :p

To really have a chance to pick some interesting material that's not located in the center row, center column, center of the stack, they should use three die. The first number would be the row, the second, the column and the third, how far in do you go before picking any card you feel like.
