I absolutely love the white gloves of destiny! Even the so called "boring" ones add humanity to the past and are still bloody interesting
@smaakjeks
@smaakjeks 6 лет назад
+Nicholas I agree. You get to picture this guy sitting there in 1842, writing down observations he hoped would come to some benefit one day. A short blip in humanity's history and record keeping. Out of the figuratively endless possible submissions to the Royal Society that could have been chosen, that little 2-day effort was plucked from the abyss of forgotten time and briefly perused by us, 175 years later.
@CoolAsFreya

Even the "dud" ones are still interesting to see what kind of things people were documenting at the time, like meteorological observations

Brady: “I’ve picked a boring one, haven’t I?” Keith: “Well it’s not great” 😂
@Vardagaladhiel
@Vardagaladhiel 6 лет назад
Probably best to let Keith decide indeed, but I actually really liked the gloves’ choices today! I can see how meteorological records like that would be useful to climate scientists or historians etc, but I think they could also be interesting to writers who are setting their work in an earlier time. Also, the rambling cover letter about the barometer was amusing! That pavement was rather spectacular though, I’m glad that you guys were able to find an actual picture of it!
@crashmancer
@crashmancer 6 лет назад
Vardagaladhiel I'd be really interested to see what the Royal Society has in the way of early climate science. The Royal Navy did a lot of observing in the 17th-19th centuries so did any of those logbooks end up in the hands of fellows who knew what to make of them?
@Vardagaladhiel
@Vardagaladhiel 6 лет назад
crashmancer I totally agree! That would be so interesting to see something like that to see how things have changed etc.

There's something I like about the White Gloves of Destiny videos, even if the objects tend not to be the most interesting on the channel. It's a good bit of fun, and I'm always impressed by the variety of odd, mundane, or sometimes magnificent things that pop up.
@neruneri
@neruneri 3 года назад
I think what's so appealing about it is that it connects us to past figures in a more close way than simply perusing their work. Even the most boring stuff has gems of mundane brilliance in them, and for me personally they help take out the aloofness in my understanding of history and helps ground my perception of it in very recognizable things. The fact that the white gloves episodes go wherever they go without deliberation aids that fact, because a lot of those mundane records would never be intentionally sought out on normal occasions.

Is it weird that I find the more "mundane" entries from the white gloves of destiny to actually be more interesting? The amount of data that scientists had to compile by hand in years gone by is simply astonishing!

Once we saw what was being described, that back-up choice really paid off. In my opinion the gloves win again!
@TimMeep

I love the random choices! Without the random choices you would never find new things, just the same known interesting items. If anything just pick 5 and with the magic of editing show the most interesting 2.

I really want Keith's job. He seems to know at least something about everything and just walking round those archives all day seems so cool. How do I apply?!
@JustinZymbaluk
@JustinZymbaluk 6 лет назад
Phoebe HB looking on Keith's page on the royal society website, it looks like before this, he was a librarian and curator at quite a few other institutions before the royal society, including the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, the Wellcome Institute, and before that the Wordsworth Trust and Armitt Library. Seems like the best way to get a job like Keith's is to get involved with a local library!
@Xplayer007

You'd want to get at least a Master's Degree in Library Science and then try to get a job as a librarian at a local library and work your way up to bigger institutions.

Those were both fascinating from the perspective of seeing how such things were reported. While the weather data itself might not be of interest, its existence at the RS and the presentation in a beautiful hand-drawn table and the note about the barometer added a lot of value. The description of the mosaic was a great example of enlightenment era information collection.

Brady, as much as I love all of your channels, it seems like this is the only one where you actively participate in the videos and I think we all like that. Any reason why? Also, electrical engineeringphile. Something like that could open up a whole other dimension of Sixty Symbols and Computerphile videos!

3:11 That's a cool looking ring on Keith's hand. I know that's not the point of the video but it is somewhat hard to miss it when Keith tries to read Victorian Chicken Scratch and he has to hover his hands over the paper like he's casting a spell.

Just think of all the information in all the archives all over the world that no one will ever look at or care about, nor even know exist! We now have digital archives that can be searched with any number of criteria, yet most of the archives are still just in books on shelves and more or less inaccessible due to the vast volume of similar information. It's like trying to find an individual fish in the sea that you don't know anything about.

@Thumbsupurbum
@Thumbsupurbum 6 лет назад
An inert gas(nitrogen maybe? but i don't know what exactly) that fills the room in the event of a fire. The idea being to smother the fire by robbing it of oxygen and hopefully preserving the contents of the vault. Doesn't use water or anything that would damage the artifacts down there.
