Pastor Daylan Woodall was kind enough to show me around First Missionary Baptist Church of Decatur, Alabama and answer all my questions about his church. You can support the program if you'd like at patreon.com/tmbh
I'm so glad to see one of my other favorite YT's watch these videos. Much respect, Destin! By the way, you and your videos are a big part of why I left military service to pursue my engineering degree!
I just think this whole series of exploring other Christian denominations is awesome and educational. I'm a white Roman Catholic in Australia and I loved learning more about this church.
I love this pastor. Really appreciate his articulation of African American Worship and how suffering both are intimately involved with each other. Greetings from a Latino Catholic🖐🏼.
I am not Baptist but the Holy Spirit tells me that this Pastor is a good man of God. May his congregation will be blessed with wisdom, auspiciousness and peace.
Even though I am Roman Catholic, I am familiar with this Church and proud it is located in Northern Alabama. Beautiful Church and very Historical. Welcome to the Bible Belt Matt!
I actually attend a historically African American Catholic Church in SC. Our motto is celebrating the genius of African American Christian spirituality. It's always amazing to experience the solemnity of a Catholic mass being interrupted by Gospel Hymns with clapping, shouting, and pure joy!
I couldn't stop the tears from flowing the entire time I was watching this... To hear the surgical way in which he delivered the history of this church and people was so moving. And then on top of that to hear him say that he can look at his congregation and say, "I know God has been good to you!" You already know before this man preaches what His calling is. May we always remember the Lord's words, "I am the LORD thy God which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage." - Ex. 20:2
I'm glad you feel the familiarity when you entered this church. As a Catholic who has traveled to other countries I have felt the same feeling. Thanks for sharing this church with us.
I was raised Baptist and EVERYTHING this Pastor talked about is 100% true about the Baptist church. I haven't been to a Baptist church in probably over 20 years, but I remember absolutely everything he talked about. 💯
There's a historical black baptist church near my house where I grew up, and how tv shows or movies show gospel worship was an understatement here, they were also super friendly, I remember the pastor saying lets welcome all our white brothers and sisters here today, and everyone came up to say hello, great church and great video Matt!
“Very.. very.. static” 😂 love how Pastor Daylan Wood answered and shed light on the dynamic of worship. And.. thank you Matt for giving the world a window into the nuances of us Jesus followers.
Matt, I LOVE your humble heart to learn and the way you facilitate such cordial and thoughtful conversations! You make space for different expressions of the Body of Christ to understand one another better and help bring us together. I always look forward to your content. :-)
Matt, I can't explain why, but these videos examining all the expressions of faith feel so very important to me. My wife grew up in the high church, I grew up in the "low" church, and this series gives me such an important perspective...I can't explain, but please keep going. I love this! Blessings!
It's a beautiful thing to see the diversity within Catholicism: not in doctrine, but in Liturgy and disciplines, which inherently reflect those doctrines. Lex Orandi lex Credendi. I would love for Matt to visit a Latin Catholic Church (LOVE the TLM and oftentimes the traditional Priests are better to talk to than others). Maybe an *FSSP or ICKSP parish*!
Thank you for this one. I grew up in a Independent Baptist Chuch where my dad is the Pastor. Our church is very Missionary centered. I look forward to seeing the next one.
I wish that youtube had a "love" button as well as a "like" button, this was a really good one and the energy between you two was apparent! Praise God!
The best channel I've encountered on RU-vid in a good while. The combination of the host being extremely personable, and at the same time thoroughly informed and curious on the subject your dealing with, is simply something to marvel at. And I have to admit, I am not a devoted christian even myself, merely sufficiently interested in the history of religious tradition. Absolutely riveting. Subscribed.
when you walked in, it was a blast from the past for me. I sang in a Baptist Church choir for three years when i was in nursing school. Nice Catholic girl in the Baptist church........ i loved it there. Made many friends and learned so much. It was where I learned about "coffee hour" after service and was so glad when the Catholic church started doing that. It just was such wonderful fellowship. :)
I loved that you let him speak and explain and listened to him. Pastor Daylan is such a compelling speaker and I'm definitely looking forward to the rest of the conversation.
So good! I loved how he talked about how context shapes our worship experience. I continue to enjoy each of these videos as they come out. Thanks for all that you're doing!
I love the heart of this pastor. He helped me realize. The suffering slaves went through. It's a shame all of that took place. Love your work in touring the different face. It's insightful. When will you tour an Assembly of God Church?
When I was visiting Sweden, the family that was hosting us mentioned "the new church" as we were driving by. Then, they mentioned that it was built in 1850-something. ^__^
In Syria there's a church (still operational) that was built prior to 325 AD. Europe isn't special. America is a young nation, give her time and she'll have old churches.
I spent several years in an African-American church. The songs are so beautiful, they haunt me to this day. They are so direct and powerful, compared to the honestly rather wishy-washy worship songs which are popular today.
FYI; There are already two parts uploaded for the RC visit. Check Matt's web page. There's also a link in the comments of each RC video to the other one.
Wonderful video, Matt. Especially interesting to me as just three weeks ago I joined a southern Baptist Church in Kentucky. And was baptized in that church two weeks ago. I look forward to your follow up videos with this pastor.
This was so good, and now I'm excited for part 2, but I have to ask about part 2 to the last video with the RC theologian...any ETA? I found it very intriguing.
I never cease to find comfort in these videos - such a breath of fresh air in the midst of all the people online trying to make a name for themselves by tearing others down. I have learned a lot from your example, I pray others do as well.
I grew up in a white, Southern Baptist church. But my dad and I were involved with a monthly mens prayer meeting that was just black Missionary Baptist churches. Some of my most cherished church memories are from prayer meetings in little black country churches. And some of my most respected ministers are African-American Baptist preachers. This video brings back a lot of good memories ❤️❤️
i think this is more about culture. Christians are bound together by salvation from original sin. But this church has a history of freed slaves which would add another level onto that.
This is great! 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼 I love how God’s Kingdom connects to every unique culture and denomination. It builds unity in the midst of celebrating wonderful diversity. The Body of Christ is a beautiful thing. Praying for more unity in The Body. Thank you! 🙏🏼👊😁 -The Hirtz Life Show 🎥📺🙌🏼
Great video as always Matt, I really love this entire series. You have done a great job reaching across what appear to be dividing lines looking for understanding and common ground. And I enjoy hte history. Also, being from Georgia it was great to hear the perspective of an African American pastor. Looking forward to your next video.
I've been in a lot of Missionary Baptist churches, but I've never heard the song "Take Me to the Water." Us white Missionary Baptists sing "Shall We Gather at the River."
Pastor Daylan was great! I can't wait to see the rest of these. With a Baptist mother and a Missionary Alliance father, this feels very akin to my growing up as well.
This video made me realized the importance of history and experience from the past. It influence the way of worship and our approach to God. I'm a Catholic from Poland and as you propably know we've had a tough history (II WW, Soviet occupation etc.) and it has huge impact on understanding and importanc of religion in my country. Thanks for the video and greatings form Poland!😃
You're always interested and engaged in these videos, but I haven't seen you this seemingly surprised and enthused since the Episcopal Church episode. This pastor is a sharp dude! The unfolding historical and social context for style of worship makes a lot more sense to me now. Thanks for this series!
Matt, once again a great and informative video. Thanks for your beautiful ministry of introducing us to some of our brothers and sisters in Christ, about whom we may not have known much. Keep up the good work. Blessings.
Love this channel. Love this pastor! My paternal grandfather and great grandfather were Baptist ministers. My maternal side was predominantly Catholic and Lutheran but further back on my moms side, my roots are from Louisiana and Baptist. I love seeing all the ways we can love Jesus. Just beautiful! I’m trying to find a church that feels like home and this channel is a great compass. I’m seeking. I know I’ll find it. Thank you. Bless you, brother.
Hey Matt! I love these kind of videos. I like how you are not afraid to cross denominational lines and have honest discussions with those other churches.
I really enjoy your videos of different denominations. It has helped me personally to come closer to God by seeing the different approach to worshipping him.
Thank youuuu!!!!🙏🏼 I absolutely love those videos that you show and talk about other Churches! It’s so important for us all. It truly is... in so many aspects. And we don’t have to agree with some of the differences, but we have to come with an open heart to love and respect our brothers in Christ. JESUS loves them all also, just as HE loves us. You are humble to see that you can study more about certain subject after talking with some of other churches’s leaders... this is very humbling and wise my friend! Amen! GOD will only bless you bringing HIS Truth. Please, continue doing more of these videos, it has been so edifying for me! Thank you soooo much! God bless you and your family!!!!🙏🏼❤️🙏🏼
I love the analogy given by this pastor about the worship experience for the choir. How they developed very expressive worship due to the prayers of deliverance from slavery. A horrible and tragic time in African American history. But as white Christians should our worship experience be any different? No we don’t have the same experience of being deliver from slavery from men but, we have the the deliverance from the slavery of satan. We should rejoice with everything in us. Yes slavery is beyond any thing we can imagine if we were not a pert of that experience. But, being delivered from the slavery of satan is an eternal life changing experience. And we should rejoice with everything in us! I don’t won’t the rocks to cry out for me! We can truly learn a lot from the African American church about truly worshiping God the way I think he expects us to worship him. I have great respect for this pastor. God bless you and your ministry!
Loved the video, as always! As insignificant as this comment may be, I'm hoping that by putting it out there it shows that the work is really appreciated :)
"Above all that, around all that, beneath all that..." that moment. An extraordinary summarizing the evils that befalls the Christian which does nothing to hinder the securing of the faithful by Christ. Love this.
Another great video, Matt! I’m LCMS and I liked the way you showed us bits of the worship service at the Lutheran church. I’d enjoy seeing you do the same for every church you visit. Christian worship is as diverse as a Christian theology. (duh, obviously) Keep up the great work and Peace be with you!
I love these videos, but this one in particular stands out to me for all the same reasons you listed in the outro. I came from a Baptist Church in New England, with my dad as the pastor, and all of the things you were identifying, were resonating with me as well. I would love to visit that church someday.
I'm part of the southern baptist convention here in northern California and this church and my church are 99.99% similar. We also have the same exact baptism pool.
Is so nice to meet two man share faith and so much history those historicals churches are a contribution to the historical contribution to the nation. God bless the baptist church. Amen
Wow. Thanks for this series Ive watched a few. Its amazing how many denominations there are. I truely believe we are all one Church, we just emphasise various teachings from Jesus and from scripture. One the role of believers in the church, another the communion, another the importance of baptism etc! Im noy even from the US, but the story of African American christians is such a beautiful one ❤
