White Oak Rootstock Knees - Episode 141 - Acorn to Arabella: Journey of a Wooden Boat

Last year, at about this time of year as well, some blood, sweat and maybe tears were shed in retrieving some large White Oak rootstock from the woods and painstakingly carving out some knees from them. This was a miserable yet rewarding experience that is now paying dividends.
Steve is finally getting to the fruits of his labor and getting to instal some beautiful White Oak knees in Arabella, and boy are they beautiful!
Thank you all for watching and supporting!

Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

The rootstock turned out beautifully. I love that none of the material goes unused. The planning and forethought of a craftsman. Nice work guys.

“Arabella’s hanging knees, “ will surely surplant the saying “the bees knees” in naval circles. I will never see tree stumps the same way. Who knew there was such power, beauty, purpose and strength stored in them. Thank you to Alex and Steve for opening my eyes. Oh yah, and a big happy Christmas to you all in the boat house!!!

11:58: We were once re-assembling an old (as in, 1916) fire engine and one of my friends was supporting the clutch while we bolted it in. We then realised that he was completely trapped, his legs simply didn't have enough knees to allow him to extract himself. We had to take it all back apart again.

I think that cop is a shining example of how policing should be done. I didnt meet the officer but from what I could tell from what you said Steve she was genuinely interested in what you guys were doing and just wanted to say hi... I've meet some petty and pretty bad cops during my life and I know it doesnt take many bad interactions with idiots like this to create a massive negative bias towards cops but we need to remember 99.9% of them are good people trying to do the right thing... we have to all realize we are all just humans and are flawed. Anyway I just wanted to applaud that cop for expressing an interest and saying hello... great job officer.

Long time viewer. I know u guys are really safety conscious, way more than me. I really think your doing a terrific job at educating. Just a word though. My Uncle was a well known wood carver. A serious craftsman for sure, he authored books, personal friend of a guy who owns a famous tool company in ottawa,Ontario. These are very serious craftsman, these guy make most of there own tools so you know the kind of guys I’m talking about. The point,, David got very sick over the years and it took a long time to diagnose. From what I understand it’s a rare spore that he inhaled when working with wood. Unique to some place n Brazil and ottawa valley, north eastern US. I think that’s where you guys are, so when I see you using the band saw on some of the beautiful knarly roots, I can’t help but think about these microbe spores that took a great craftsman down. Just thought I pass it along, as impossible as it sounds it does happen, best wishes in 2021 .And that’s gonna be a nice boat !

This is a fantastic and thoughtful comment you've authored here, and we really appreciate it. Wood dust is an organic material, and comes with all the wild things that entails. Thank you very much for sharing this story. We take it to heart. In WoodenBoat issue 273, this aspect of wood dust was briefly addressed in Getting Started in Boats.
