After 15 cruises and 55 shore excursions, the White Pass Railroad is my favorite. Last year I took the tour which combined the train with a bus to Carcross Yukon. LOVELY !

Best thing I saw on vacation was seeing #190, another Yukon locomotive, still in action on Tweetsie Railroad. Imagine if the Yukon Queen came back and found one of her sisters still steaming down the line.

I was blessed to travel to the Yukon in June 2014 and after travelling by bus up through White Pass to Carcross with a side trip to Emerald Lake, we then took the train back down to Skagway. My husband and I have travelled to many parts of the world but this was by far my favourite excursion of any. In Carcross, much to my amazement, I went through what is considered the best taxidermy museum in the world and I'm not at all surprised with their lifelike displays of woolly mammoths, the largest grizzly bear ever seen and all the wildlife of this beautiful area from tiny snowshoe rabbits up to huge moose standing over nine foot tall, several elk, wolves hunting in packs, all sorts of bears as well as countless other smaller wildlife and of course the ones I've already mentioned. What is great about the display is the fact that none of the animals were killed on purpose. The pristine wilderness was breathtaking and I would go back again tomorrow - and I live all the way across the world in Australia! I would actually love to do a month travelling the Yukon with my hubby in an RV just to take it all in. Thanks for sharing this so I could relive so many beautiful memories.

+Jeni Robinson G'day to ya. Thanks for the story. Just curious, did you take the bus from a cruise ship and, if so, how long did the journey take? I'll be going next September 2016 .. all the way from The Netherlands.

+Linda Casey Hi Linda, you're very welcome. I was on a Holland America cruise ship and took the bus up to Carcross for a lunch stop at the trading post there and then caught the heritage train back. It was about eight and a half hours altogether from start to finish. I think we left around 9.15 a.m. and were back around 5.45 p.m. I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time - let me know on here what you thought of it. If you're interested, I am a novelist and have a FB page "Jennifer Larmar - Australian Author". I plan to eventually write a novel about the gold rush in this area, once I finish the next two on my list! I was in Amsterdam six years ago for five days and had a lovely time - you live in a fascinating place!

Jeni Robinson I just looked at the departure schedule and though I'd love to do what you did, I'd be standing on the shoreline waving ta-ta to the ship already out to sea. It would be gone a good 3/4 of an hour before I got off the train. This ol' lady can't swim that fast or run that far without causing a scene. ;) Thanks for the tips though. Cheers

+Linda Casey Oh, what a shame. I'm so sorry you're missing out. At least you can get an idea of what it's like from the video above. Oh, and I just remembered, I'm sure there's one that just does the train trip and doesn't go on to Carcross. It's much shorter in distance and time. At least then you could see some of this fabulous area. All the best :)

+Jeni Robinson Oh happy day. I found a Norwegian cruise ship that goes to Skagway in September 2016 and won't leave port till 8:15 pm! So, I'm going to book that cruise and take the same trip you did. Thanks again for the great tip. Can't wait to see it.

Great video, Steve! It brought back so many memories of the time I took the same trip fifteen years ago, but I did it by road from the Canadian side down to Skagway and Dyea, and then back again... Another trip to Alaska by road is on my bucket list :)

My mother had wanted to go to Alaska as one of the final states to reach seeing all 48 in her lifetime. But she is no longer so mobile at 72 and won't likely be able to get there. Unless some miracle comes along and heals her enough to get around.

I wonder if he noticed the hoof prints etched in the stone, from the horses that were loaded down with supplies of the prospectors headed into the Yukon during the gold rush of 95, on the top of White Pass. I filmed the entire trip up the White Pass from the open car on the rear of the train. Highly recommend this trip. You will see things, you could only imagine. You actually travel up through the clouds, to get to the top. Truly an amazing trip. To think we paid 7.2 million dollars for Alaska, in 1967. I'll bet the Russians are still kicking themselves in the butt.

one of my favorite memories from one of so many vacations was August 5th 2006. I was in Skagway Alaska and i rode a white pass pulled by the old 73! As a rail fan and true railroader, that was one of the most mesmorizing experiences ever. The best part was, i was fortunate to got to ride in the cab of old 73 and i got to blow that whistle a few times. i honestly i thought i was in a railfans paradise. it really was truly amazing.
