1978 White Road Commander. Chassis no. 3220. Sold by HW Crouch from Chipping Norton, Sydney (who were White Truck Dealers). Specs: Engine 6V92T Detroit Diesel (still has the original engine block as engine numbers match up with ID Plate ) with Jacobs Engine Brakes, 15 Speed RT12515, diff ratio 4.11 riding on a Bartuska Multi Leaf Suspension, 136 inch wheelbase with a single 80 gallon steel fuel tank. All original running gear.
This is one of the three single drive, day cab Road Commander Test Trucks that were built for Clutha Coal, based in Camden NSW, Australia. The other two were powered by an 8V71N GM and NTC 290 Cummins. You can see them on the back of the trailer at the very start of this video. My husband Ray and I own all three of the Clutha test trucks. Clutha at the time were wanting to replace their ageing 1418 Mercedes Benz and the Australian International Acco fleet, so they approached four truck manufacturers who were Mack, Scania, Kenworth and White. They all had to be day cab and single drive and pull tandem axle tipping trailers. To cut a long story short, White won the contract and supplied Clutha with the largest single order of White Road Bosses here in Australia. I believe there were 90 odd Road Bosses, all Cummins powered and tandem drive. For more info please visit: www.coalcarters.com.au

I remember driving these across the Nullarbor first the road boss then a road commander, great had a sleeper. Brings back memories. I remember getting passed by Toranto s and rockasanos because i was too slow. Only allowed to do eighty then. My god a trip down memory road. Lot has changed. Bravo from Victoria Australia

My father and grandfather worked for Clutha in the coal mines at the back of Oakdale. Nice to see an old blue truck in good condition. Love the sound of that 6v92 as well.

Very interesting piece of Clutha mines history must be near broken Hill somewhere. H.W Crouch Sydney and Duce commercial motors Brisbane were both White Motor Corporation Dealers.

Back in the 70s in vic my old man had a dodge fully tarp running east west the old petrols it was about 3 yrs old and this bloke had bought one of these brand new running east west any way on the flats he was rounding the old man up but as soon as they got to a big hill the man was leaving him dead like he was going backward 300 mile down the road they both pulled up for a feed and a cuppa the bloke in the white came across pretty pissed off and said I just bought this fn thing and your leaving me for dead what you got under that fn bonnet the old man and brother looked at each other and laughed and replied ( it’s not what’s under the bonnet son he said it’s what under the fn tarp , what’s that the bloke in the whit said my old man laughed FOAM hahahahah

Kevin Aylesbury I’m from Texas USA and am fascinated with Australian trucking.....one question wats does tarp mean out there?🤷🏾‍♂️
@andrewking9761
@andrewking9761 3 года назад
@@tinyistobig Hope your still with us. Yes tarp is short for tarpaulin and in the 1980s a trailer maker invented the "Tautliner" a flat trailer with curtains basically preventing injuries etc. But strictly for palletized loads only as you can't fit over dimension loads. One thing is for sure Detroit engines were very popular on long distance and overnight trips. The 6V92T, TA or TTA 330hp with turbo, 350 with after cooling or 270hp with a high torque range. A very compact, lighter weight engine. Adequate power and incredible durability and good on fuel.
