White's Boots Review - White's are among the best boots in the world, they are handmade in Spokane Washington by a team of skilled craftsmen. Whites boots super expensive and usually cost $500-$600 like their famous Smokejumper boots. So when they were released with a moc toe boot that was cheaper that Red Wing's Classic Moc, and half the price of their other boots a lot of people were excited and a lot of people were suspicious. So I got a pair to cut in half to see what’s inside and if they live up to the White’s name.

Quick Clarification - Whites doesn’t use the cardboard counter in the majority of their boots but they have the cardboard counter in the past in some of their more affordable boots with great success. As far as I know their regular $500+ boots use solid leather counters.

I work as a footwear salesperson at Cabela's. I really appreciated the video you made cutting open the carhartt boots. I will try to steer customers away from them. Do you think you can cut a pair of muck boots in half? Specifically the Arctic Ice series, they feature 'vibram arctic grip' which is made out of some glass nylon or something. I'm not sure what it is, but the traction is incredible and I would love to see what's inside them. (They are also insulated to be suitable for use in -60 degree weather, it would be cool to see what that looks like, too.) I know muck boots aren't leather, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask. Thanks! Keep up the awesome content

@Fred S. They are great boots if you get a pair that's built correctly. They broke in quickly and easily. The leather is great. The sole is wearing faster than I expected. You just need to be prepared to send them back for exchange if they aren't built to your satisfaction. If they are for work only, and the looks aren't as important, they're great. My feet would have been very happy with the initial pair. My eyes were not happy. That said, I am happy with this second pair. I hope this helps.

I worked Oil Field Services in the Austin Chalk for 20+ years, and Red Wing slip-ons got the nod with almost every crew. Most saturated the boots, dumped them out, wore Thick socks on day one. Next day they were left to relax and dry completely. After that, the new ones were worn alternate days till broken in, then worn regularly unless wet through on a very wet location, as we did some board locations where swampy. My experiences were in a smaller company with around 100 hands. We set, knocked down, stacked and moved drilling rigs - Plumbed tank batteries - set pump jacks - all with pole trucks or cranes. Also, we supplied tooling - drill stem - and downhole equipment while standing, working in any weather we encountered. I hope this helps.

I own a size 10D Perry in the distressed brown. I chose the Perry over all other Mac Toe boots because I like the look of the Perry. I wear my boots casually and at work in the office but not in the field. The leather is thick and the break-in has been difficult. I don't wear them daily which is why they are close to comfortable after about about 40-50 wears. The boot is quality through and through. Ok, I got a pair of the 8 inch Perry's. First pair of White's boots. Wore them for 11 hours today, 11,125 steps and this is the first time EVER wearing any brand new boots without getting a blister somewhere on one of my feet. I've been wearing boots for about 39 years for every work day. Until now, I always got blisters for the first couple of days. I normally wear 9EE and ordered 8.5EE per their website suggestion and they are the perfect size for me. I also have a pair of 4 year old Thorogood moc-toe boots, and I am not sure I want to get them refurbished (re-soled). These Perry's are spoiling me and I know they will last longer than the Thorogoods. I would say that thye are just as comfortable and just as easy to break in so far.

I agree with everything. Also half the point of a resole is to take it apart and put new cork in. Mind you I've never owned moc toes so I don't know how fast a human would chew through these soles, probably faster than vibram or even just leather. So maybe a full rework every couple of soles is all that is needed.
@vr6myk
@vr6myk 3 года назад
Yeah either use the same sole, or if the resole goes deeper to replace the cork layer, a shank can be put between the cork layer and a different outsole that doesnt have a shank built in. Or use no shank like the redwings. The shank in the outsole is interesting though, I never knew they did that. I don't think I've seen that in all the resole videos I've watched from Trenton and Heath or Brian the Bootmaker or Bedo's. The shank is usually separate and in between the outsole and midsole.

After watching this video and the Moctober videos probably a dozen times I bought the Perry's boot. Here's my 2 cents. I almost bought the Red Wings but after all the horror stories about the break in period I decided it just wasn't worth the pain and trouble; it appears the sole will wear out right about the time they feel comfortable and broke in. I felt confident buying this boot after watching this video series. I wear a size 13 in all my shoes so I called Whites and they confirmed to order a size 12D. I've been wearing the boots 2 -3 hours a day inside for the past 3 days and will say these boots do run quite large and the 12D even feels almost too big in part because my width is between a B & C. Had I been in the store I would have liked to try on an 11.5 for comparison. I changed out the insole with a thicker insole and it fits better, hopefully it won't stretch out and be too big. The quality and workmanship of this boot is very good, they are heavier than I thought they'd be. Appear to be very tough with the exception of the Vibram sole.

Hey, I really enjoy your videos and this series was very interesting. Why do Moc-Toe boots all seem to have the wedge sole? @thechief043
@thechief043 3 года назад
That's a good question, since I'm going to assume most of the hard working surface style jobs (where this type of outsole excels) are present in Ireland and the rest of Europe. Maybe the manufacturing process to make the soles themselves is more expensive there? Or maybe it's availability and the fact that the wedge soles wear out faster? Wedges are also not ideal for climbing ladders, maybe there's a reason related to that?

Being from a country where most shoes range from $25 to $100 and are for the most part just glued, seeing this brand's "cheapest" boot being $300 felt kinda funny. Also just checked their page and the layout is so good, love them separating the boots by uses instead of models. Shipping here is terrible and returns are basically non-existent so wouldn't get them, but if I ever visit the US I would totally get a pair.

Yeah if you had a tier list of some sort, these brands like whites and nicks are amongst the most expensive but best build quality. For the average user, you would not notice any difference between this 270 perry and something like a Carolina moc toe

This is close to what im looking for. A budget boot with cork in it to shape to my foot. I think the toe box is a lot more attractive on both this one and the round toe they also sell over the redwings. but idk how i feel about the external counter with the cardboard support. It makes it look a little big in the back too. I might like that though because i have really large ankles and any room i can get in that area is important. Lots of good info in this video

Looking at that compressed cardboard counter: It’s on the “outside” of and can potentially be exposed to water. How will it respond to getting wet or saturated?
@claytonberg721
@claytonberg721 3 года назад
That's more or less what allen edmonds, alden, crockett and jones, pretty much everyone not on the level of john lobb make their heel stacks out of. I wouldn't worry much about that heel counter. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Cardboard sounds like paper! WTF is it doing in shoes? What happens to cardboard when it gets wet a few times?
@Savagedownsouth
@Savagedownsouth 3 года назад
I believe it's compressed and/or soaked in some sort of waterproofing stuff. We use som similar stuff at my work, and water beads on it until wiped off. Might not be the same thing though.
@claytonberg721

Honestly I just don't see how this could be a deal breaker. I just resoled a pair of Allen edmonds this summer that had the compressed cardboard heel stack. I don't know the age of the shoes, but they stopped making the model 10 years ago. The cobbler just reused the heel stack. it's fine. I've got a pair of alden 900 going in for resoles next. Alden also uses the same material in the heel stack. The cobbler will almost certainly resuse the heel stack. Florsheim from what I understand it switched from an all leather heel stack to a composite material in the early 80's. I had a pair of shell gunboats that are dated from 1988 resoled and again, the cobbler reused the heel stack. No I agree it's not perfect to use the compressed paper material but lots of really good shoe/boot makers are doing it. It's how they get GYW shoes to market under $500.

White's and Danner are both owned by the same Japanese shoe company. that may explain the similarities in the boots or why it seems like the white's are an upgraded version of the danners like you said.

Just want to put out a white’s boots warning out there for November 2022. I ordered a pair of boots during their Black Friday sale. They charged me. I got an email telling me the boots I ordered were discontinued even though they are advertised on their site. More significantly they said it will take 14 days to get my money back. I’m sure they’re lovely boots. BUT I’ll never know cause I’ll never buy one of their products with that kind of customer service.

I've heard some pretty mixed reviews about the Perry and White's customer service. If I was going to drop $350 on a boot, Nick's is the gold standard and you're only $200 away from a pair of Nick's... I would wait patiently for another couple months to save up more cash and go for Nick's Traveler Moc. Buy nice or buy twice.

I wear Danner's Bull Run Lux Vintage Sterling with the dark brown soles. They are extremely comfortable and been through 2 resoles already and the uppers are still very good. I would love to try these White's as well as Nicks Moc Toes but just hate the white soles. To me wearing white sole boots is like owning a car with white sidewall tires. Must be a fashion thing because all the Moc Toes come exclusively in the creamy white sole. Nicks as well as all others are the same, and the odd pair of Danner's Bull Run Lux Vintage Sterling is the only exception in the market. Just to illustrate a point that not everybody likes white sidewall tires as in boots with creamy white soles.
