This band was tops in the 80's, I used to see them in my home town in castleford. They did a fantastic version of rush's 2112 and pink floyd's shin on you crazy dimond. Now Janick Gers with iron maiden, brill.
Interesting isn't that a band from this movement, at that time, would tackle such a subject as the suffragette movement? "They fought for rights / Rose to heights / That men never saw" is pretty deep for the time. I find that a LOT of NWOBHM bands had some pretty deep, aware, socially observant/relevant lyrics, going against the outside misconceptions usually thrown at metal, particularly at this time.
+David Knight I agree and it's a damn shame those subjects were largely ignored. i loved that era. I'm only 48 so at least I was there with my skin tight drainpipe jeans, cut-off denim jacket with loads of patches on the back and a bullet belt. Sadly that fashion has been replaced with baggy clothes and hoodies and their listening choice is now Foo Fighters, Snow Patrol and Green Day lol. Well I suppose there's always new generations. +TheVidkid67 That's a tough call. Being in Canada our exposure was limited back then, to compilation albums, cassette or vinyl. Bands like BRONZ and ALASKA had a bit of a push over here. One metal comp I had bought had a TWELFTH NIGHT song on it! I did actually have a vinyl of STARFIGHTERS. And SAXON, PRAYING MANTIS, TYGERS OF PAN TANG, TOKYO BLADE had a following among us. A lot of people liked VENOM but I didn't, and their fans seemed to be a different crew compared to other metalheads then. I liked SAMSON too. At the time my main music was HAWKWIND so obviously MOTORHEAD had my attention too. As the 80s went on I got into the German metal like WARLOCK, HELLOWEEN, and RUNNING WILD (they were quite followed here almost as popular as SCORPIONS for awhile). A lot of NWOBHM bands we never heard of back then that would have been commonly known in Britain, like we never heard of TOSH, only after youtube I heard them. In late 80s METALLICA doing covers of NWOBHM bands helped other bands I am sure gain some popularity. I really can't pick a favourite. I really loved "Eat The Rich" by TYSONDOG and maybe they would lean to being my favourite because of the NWOBHM bands I was exposed to back their lyrics struck me as having a point a protest to them, and I don't think they have ever done a bad song. I'm not sure you were including DEF LEPPARD or IRON MAIDEN when asking about NWOBHM.
+David Knight I love Hawkwind, one of my favourite bands between 75-85. Samson were one of my fave NWOBHM bands, sadly though Paul Samson and Chris Aylmer died of cancer. The first 3 albums anyway. Judas Priest were often confused with NWOBHM but they were around years before any of the rest and I only like their 70's stuff. I love Iron Maiden's first 2 albums. I think a lot of bands lost their way in the early 80's.
+TheVidkid67 Yes that would figure as I didn't have much interest in HAWKWIND in the 80s though some of their experimenting with sax was interesting: my favourite record was Quark Strangeness, but there was a comp I had on cassette that was even better that always wore out, or one time was stolen, which had just about every 'classic' HAWKWIND song on it. I also preferred JUDAS PRIEST's 70s stuff, although the Screaming For Vengeance got my interest first then I settled on Sin After Sin as being my favourite album of theirs, followed by their first 2 albums (the ones that keep getting retitled). Their other albums have a lot of songs I like, but not whole albums. I do think that Point Of Entry has some classic songs on it and is under rated. They like IRON MAIDEN to me were like I like half the songs on that one and I like half the songs on this one. ...My favourite IRON MAIDEN album is Powerslave. Being a bookish metal fan my mind was totally blown by Rime, and the live version was amazing. I had also been into Egyptian mythology for a few years by that time, and it was just a perfect match for me at that time all around. I should say I have much respect for Dianno and have supported a lot of his solo work with my earnings. But Maiden I have found inconsistent: I didn't like Somewhere In Time much at all although Seventh Son which followed would be my #2. ...Sad about Samson. Around here I don't think anybody much followed the non-Bruce albums. I am sure the Biceps of Steel videos were shown on video shows here. I am sure I saw them around '82/83 on tv.
