John Sykes is what made that his album great. I think Coverdale got rid of him because he didn’t want to have to split the spotlight with John. It backfired on him, even with the great Steve Vai he couldn’t do as well as he did with John. John is, In my opinion the most underrated guitarist of all time. It has to kill Coverdale that Tawny’s the name that the vast majority of people still know.
@imarriedabrkfsttaco3737

100% agree! John Sykes is the total package. An incredible songwriter who can absolutely wail when he sings (just as good or better than Coverdale live imo) and who absolutely destroys the guitar with his own unique style,wide AF vibrato and instantly recognizable tone. Had the first Blue Murder album been released in 1987 it would've blown TF up just like WS1987 did thanks to John's "Wall of Sound". I love Steve Vai and enjoy some of the heavily processed,super slick songs on SOTT,but compared to the stripped down,raw AF & massive John Sykes guitars on Slide it in & WS 1987 it's night and day IMO.

John Sykes is the reason I took up the guitar, I saw him live and my jaw dropped back in the mid-80's. Although I didn't take the guitar up until I was 44. Blue Murder / Sykes band after Whitesnake was just bad timing, the music was changing in 89-90. By 91-92 this type of music was being replaced with Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Nirvana, Jane's Addiction, etc. Power Chords had died off, chorus pedals disappeared, the awesome ballads like "Is This Love" were replaced by "Smells Like Teen Spirit" stuff.

"...Bon Jovi set the tone for what Whitesnake hadda be..." I've worked creatively in LA w/ talented actors, musicians, comics, and tv personalities for decades. The stories from these pros sound like much of the success, falling outs, compromise, luck and 'jazz' that I've experienced. Tawny Kitaen probably had as many boyfriends as any everyday LA hottie who tried moving up in the world. Hard to think that rocker Coverdale was struggling for success in LA like everyone else.

Coverdale rode John Sykes' coat tails to the bank and to the top of the charts. The second the needle hit the vinyl on that album it was obvious who was in charge: John Sykes. He totally defines and dominates the sonic landscape. He is obviously the leader. Coverdale made the mistake of thinking because he owned the 'brand', that he 'was' the brand; the brand had just been redefined and rewritten by Sykes, who Coverdale immediately fired. The disappointment of fans is lost on Coverdale: he doesn't even realize the magnitude of his bad judgment.
@adamwarlock5286
@adamwarlock5286 4 года назад
Two sides to every story. Coverdale was suffering from a sinus infection while attempting to Record what would become the 'whitesnake' album released as 1987 in US. Sykes was impatient and made the error of saying that they should continue recording with new singer if necessary. Naturally , Coverdale took this as a betrayal and had no compunction about showing Sykes the door. A Great shame how things ended up.

John Kalodner said he "met this guy John Sykes...I put him with David Coverdale to write the new record (1987). Was he just abbreviating the story? Because Coverdale met Sykes when they played with Thin Lizzy and then he joined Whitesnake before Slide It In was released. Perhaps Kalodner had made the arrangement to get Sykes in the band, but in this interview it sounds like he's saying he found Sykes and introduced him to David as his new writing partner. He even rerecorded all of Micky Moody's parts.
@VideodromeDisco
@VideodromeDisco 6 лет назад
Hi - yes, Kalodner was responsible for getting Sykes in the band. Here’s an excerpt from an interview with Micky Moody: “A: "I think right after the Saints & Sinners record. David started listening to a lot of American industry people... especially John David Kalodner from Geffen. This guy was ruthless and I’ll tell you why... he last time that I played with Whitesnake was in October 1983. While, I was playing... I think it was in Hamburg.. John Kalodner was standing at the side of the stage and he was taking notes. I thought that 'this is sinister... this is dark'. By the end of the show, he went straight to David and he showed him the notes... it was obvious that John Kalodner did not think much of me. Here’s a story after that incident... we were at a hotel in Germany... on the same tour... and David was sitting with John Sykes. Without any specific reason, he turned to me and he said: 'Don’t you ever turn your back at the audience during the show'. He said that in front of John Sykes and it was evident that Sykes was really embarrassed. I didn’t say anything, but I remember thinking 'Fuck you'! I am sorry to tell you this, but this is the truth. He had embarrassed me in front of another musician, but David had already decided to bring John Sykes in the band. After the last gig in Belgium, I asked the tour manager to go and get all the members of Whitesnake in my room to announce my decision to leave the band. Everybody came in my room except Coverdale... Cozy - being a truly honest guy - said to me: 'Good decision'! Jon Lord started crying.. cause Jon is always very emotional. A week later, David called me and said, 'Oh, you’re leaving the band...'. That’s the story guys!"

Thank you. I figured that might have been the case. The way he says it in this particular interview (the audio documentary - which I LOVE, by the way) it sounded like, "Hey David, meet John Sykes.He's going to write the new album with you." It's like he skipped the, "he should replace Micky Moody and tour Slide It In...and then write the new record with you." I was familiar with the Micky Moody interview so I had to listen a few times to see if I just missed something. Thank you for your reply! (Man I wish this were a video documentary!!!!)

John Sykes was this Album period. He wrote 9 out of the 11 songs. The blowhards talking on this audio are just trying to take credit. They did not have the songs or the guitar parts. The Dan Huff story is just a way to smear Sykes. I've seen Huff in the studio with Keith Urban and he had to learn Urban's parts. The idea that Huff walked in and knew the parts before everyone else is pure BS.

The real Whitesnake died after Saints n Sinners or maybe even Come n get it, they’re called an average band in this video but they were individually suited to the music and great musicians and much better than a contrived band of “stars”, Lovehunter, Ready n Willing and Come n Get It are brilliant albums and although they never sold millions in the USA they were much more genuine and soulful and from the heart than what Whitesnake later became, the real band is on the cover of Live in the Heart of the City and David Coverdale in his black jeans n sweatshirt and without his hair dyed and “styled”, the marketing machine killed the heart and soul of this band....it’s not Whitesnake without Marsden Moody Paice Lord and Murray either!

I always considered "Slide It In" the last real Whitesnake album. It was as good as "Saints and Sinners" in my eyes. After they (re; Coverdale) moved to L.A. and teased his hair and became another mindless hair-metal/poser/sell-out band, they were dead to me. (Don't forget they re-released "Fool for Your Lovin'" again, too. Seems a lot of the creativity left with his "cut-'em-out-of-my-life" people) Letting Murray, Marsden, and Moody go was the worst decision ever made.

Opinions are different. Musically, skills wise, the band on the '87, and even the touring band were better than any incarnation previously.

Yeah i totally agree with you on that one. Unfortunately David was swayed by the American market. But i will always hold high their bluesy years with Bernie Marsden and Micky Moody. Was really glad when Marsden and Moody brought out solo bluesy stuff of their own in later years. Whitesnake became run of the mill instead of sticking to their roots and being known for their bluesy slide guitar sound.

im a whitesnake fan thats in the middle about stuff. Love 1987, but dont like the remake of here i go again, though i love how John Sykes added to Crying In The Rain. Love the early stuff, Neil Murray is definitely a better bassist than Rudy Sarzo, and Ian Paice is probably a better drummer than Aldridge to some extent, it's closer with them though. Anyone thinking Sarzo's better than Murray should listen to Colliseum II and then get back to me. Amazing bassist. I like 1987, but prefer the 1984 lineup to the lineups after the 1987 album. Even if Coverdale was going metal that was the peak of that version of Whitesnake, culminating in the 1987 album and then downhill from there. Slip of the Tongue isn't my cup of tea though, I think Vai is great but not for Whitesnake, and the songs veer too much into AOR territory but definitely not in a good way. Btw, I love Lovehunter, it's my second favorite after 1987, yeah I'm a bitt different in that i like both periods of Whitesnake, except after he fired John Sykes

She met him during the making of the album, before the videos. She was dating him when they went to Marty Callner's house. She didn't sit in in the recording of HIGA, but uses the lyrics of the songs to illustrate how one would go about comping vocals, which is also something that happens more in the mixing phase.

The video/single version of "Here I Go Again" was recorded after the "Whitesnake/1987" album was completed and being mastered for release and distribution. Kolodner corralled guitarist Dann Huff and a few other players to re-record a poppier take on the song more that was more likely to become a hit on Top 40 AM radio and MTV. That had to be the session for which Kitaen recalls being present.

Not only that but during the same summer/fall of '80'81, when I was buying my Whitesnake albums from a local record store, I heard the radio DJ announce that Deep Purple were reuniting to tour again. I freaked out. Didn't know which line up was going to tour. This was highly unexpected news. Whitesnake with Lord and Paice were doing fine. Blackmore with Glover were fine. Ian Gillan was doing alright in the UK. Hughes had fallen off the face of the earth. Would it be some mixture of these two Purple's. All the way up to the day of the show, no press. None. Nothing! Showed up. The opening band was named Myst. Good a good laugh. An 8000 seater music hall was at a feverous pitch. Deep Purple were about to come on stage and people were going nuts like I'd never seen. The band comes out and begins Highway Star. Sounds a bit off. Maybe it's rust, give them some more time. Man, still sounds awful. What's up? Im fact it doesn't sound nor look like Deep Purple. Audience was mad. I though I recognized one Purple member though. Oddly it was Rod Evens, Purple's original singer who sang on Hush, and he, they and It were horrible. They butchered the music. Didn't even sound like the songs. That's hard to do! I remember, "This one's "Might Just Take Your Live." The organ intro was all wrong, the groove awful, It was BAD BAD BAD. A garageband made up of 12 year old musicians with only a month of practice could have given them a run for their money. As weird as it was as I was, and pissed too, I'm still glad I got to see it because I got to see and hear Rod Evans, and I think it helped start Purple's reunion, even if it was just a small part. But it's truly sad that Coverdale and Hughes couldn't get it together with Blackmore before Lord died for the much anticipated MKIII reunion. Yeah, MKII is the more definitive version, but as of now exulding Paice of course, all of the MKIII musicians are better than the MKII musicians. (both Glover and Hughes are great bassists for totally different reasons). MKIII has said in the past that they wanted to make that "Machine Head" heavy MKIII 3rd album that they never got to make. That would have been awesome because Hughes can still sing and play just as well or better than in '73, Coverdale has lost quite a bit but if he stays down in his baritone he sounds fine. Lord is always ready. Blackmore would have gone nuts with that powerful lineup. Especially if Paice would have done it. The other abomination of "Deep Purple" with a few good songs granted, have done nothing interest since Blackmore left. It's really now the Ian Gillan band. That's why I hope Blackmore can finally reach a deal with Coverdale and Hughes, maybe a Wakeman kid on keys and Ian Paice on drums, to show the world just who made Deep Purple. Wouldn't take long that's for sure. There's your story of the day!
