From the Film Australia Collection. Made by the National Film Board 1947. Directed by Geoffrey Collings. This film surveys post-war Japan and life under Allied occupation. It comments on the reception and installation of democratic practice and considers Australia’s part in the occupation and Japan’s future development.
It ponders the economic and political outlook for Japan, and consideration is given to such questions as the new status of Japanese women. The film finally poses the question of the future destiny of the nation.
One of two films on post-war Japan that the director made with researcher and writer Jules Feldmann. Watch Over Japan mainly shows the Australian contingent in the Occupation Force. Whiter Japan? is concerned with questions of democracy, economics and politics, with the black market, inflation and the future of post war Japan. There was considerable controversy with outside authorities about its script.
