Swinging a wet fly like you mentioned is about the most relaxing form of fishing in my opinion. I like hunting with streamers, or drop shotting nymphs, but if I want to just relax the wet fly swing is where it's at.

Another good lesson! As a tyro fly tyer for a year now, I've kinda come to the conclusion that a lot of the updated fly patterns are meant to appeal more to the tyer or the flyfisherman an not necessarily the trout. Something learned growing up fishing for bass in farm ponds and reading magazines like Sports Afield, Outdoor Life or Field and Stream, was that bass lures were made more to appeal to the fisherman than the fish, even tho the lure caught fish. Being of limited funds for a bunch of lures, all I ever fished with was plastic worms and Rapala minnows, with an ocassional Hula popper or Jitterbug for evening trips to the pond. Those memories stuck with me as I began my fly tying. Recently I've started thinking that instead of trying to master every updated fly pattern variation that comes along, I'm going to concentrate on tying and fishing about 12-15 traditional patterns with variations of hook size and color. This video reminded me of the lessons learned growing up and how to apply those lessons as I continue to learn the fly tying craft. Now back to the bench on this dreary winter day.

Using hen hackle wing tips is because the genetic rooster hackles don't have wide round tips anymore. Rooster hackle tips have become like spear points. The rounder tips of hen hackles is a good alternative

Davie McPhail tied a #16 or 18 (UK sizes are smaller than US too) BWO DRY FLY spider using a medium dun whiting or hebert miner HEN hackle. Not only was it gorgeous, I absolutely believe it would float. I'm just trying to figure out what the difference between the two lines is as far as the length of the barbules. I'd love to tie some teeny flies with one for matching the BWO and the midge hatches year round in the Smokies.

Just for clarification. Would you tie hen hackle on parachute flies in addition to rooster hackle or hen hackle by itself to give that more "random" look? Great video...learned a lot about hen hackle!

Kelly in one of your recent videos you show black laced feathers or teardrop whatever people call them . What patterns would you use those. Can’t find any online

I fish the crap out of NC Spiders. Upstream other than the Grannom and ISO HATCH. Necks are mandatory. No backs for Spiders. Game or Neck only. Those necks are fantastic for Spiders.
