One of the options for having multiple shots available in the age of the muzzleloading rifle was the swivel-breech rifle. Such a rifle would have typically two barrels and one lock - one the first barrel was fired, the whole barrel assembly could be rotated 180 degrees to bring the other barrel into alignment with the lock. These could be two rifle barrels, two shotgun barrels, or one of each.
MJ Whitmore of Potsdam, New York build many such swivel-breech rifles and also build some much less common 4-barrel swivel guns. This particular example has two .40 caliber rifled barrels on one side and a combination of a .40 caliber rifle and a .40 smoothbore barrel on the other side. In a particularly neat touch, it holds a single loading rod hidden in a spring-capped chamber in the center of the barrel cluster.

There's a lot of craftsmanship in that firearm. By our standards not too practical but by the amount of wear on the gun it seems to have had plenty of use none-the-less. Nice eye candy for the firearm enthusiast.

Oooh, beautiful! Reminds me of one I saw in a book I used to frequently check out from the local library when I was a small child (even then I had an interest in mechanical things of all sorts including firearms). I don't remember much about it, but the cover was blue and it had all sorts of wonderful things like that and duck's-foot pistols and 24-shot pepperbox pistols. I should go and see if it's still there, maybe track down a copy for my own.

"Why didn't more people do it?" Don't forget that well done multiple barrel regulation is a long and expensive process. Still is today, in fact. A modern company needs a week to regulate just one double barrel rifle, much less four barrels.
@SuperFunkmachine
@SuperFunkmachine 8 лет назад
+Ben M Barrel regulation is a long range problem, pistols are often used too close to matter and shotguns have a spread to cover it up. Look at the duel sights, i think there to adjust each barrel aim point.
@benm5913
@benm5913 8 лет назад
SuperFunkmachine Individual sights would be a cheaper option. Much cheaper. Though, it's important to note that the weapon in question is a long gun, not a pistol. Otherwise, excellent point.

Now that you showed a few muzzle loaders: If ever there´s an inline flintlock up for auction, please make video! They exist, in one book I saw a picture of one (made around 1790). Too bad this design didn´t catch on, the look of the rifle is awesome. Maybe too modern for its day...

That opens the door to a question I've had for a long time. What was the thought process behind the pointy butts? Modern butts are flat and more comfortable. What is the proper way to use the old style pointy stocks? Like what's on a Kentucky long rifle.

If you think of the down sides: you need a barrel/ shoot; they need to be long because of black powder and they need to be thick because old metallurgy.

The extensive pitting on the barrels seems due to rust that has been cleaned up over time, possibly with an acid. I notice that on the less engraved parts that a lost of scratches show up from wire brushing that's been done at some stage too. Was this restoration work recent, and how much had to be done to get it to this condition?

Be amazing to get a look at a Kalthoff repeater - level-action flint and wheellock guns with internap powser and bullet magazines, some even self-priming(also crazy expensive and not terribly reliable). Probably never going to happen, sadly;, too rare and expensive. Girardoni air rifle would be cool, too; that repeater actually saw military service.

I wounder if it´s any faster to fire 8 rounds down range then a normal rifle in the same era.
@Appletank8
@Appletank8 8 лет назад
+Exploatores Technically, it would take the same amount of time it would take to reload 4 barrels. If the other guy had 4 guns strapped on his back for whatever reason, 8 shots would take the same amount of time. Pretty much, in choosing four barrels, you trade sustained fire over burst fire.

i cant see the weight being the problem as to why it was never used for military or non recreational use, more or less the fact that once you shoot all 4 rounds, your gonna be reloading for 2-3 minutes, and thats not something you wanna do while your in the heat of battle

Man I watch all these magnificient works of craftsmanship and as a pacifist and mostly, I guess, as a european, I must say that it sucks that these things are clearly made to kill efficiently. I just like the engineering that went into it and surely, when i would buy a gun like this i want to be abled to shoot it. I would play around with it, dissasemble and reassemble it again and most probable break it at some point. So only replicas for me i guess.
