I saw her live in Milan in 1988. You cannot believe what it was like. I have never heard anything like that ever again. That woman was pure sound. Her voice filled in a huge arena and took us all to the closest spot to heaven. Truly, to this day, the most beautiful and extraordinary voice i have ever heard (and I have heard them all...).

Who cares for analytical vocal and technique only?…if so, listen to opera only…Whitney is the unreached queen of timbre, pure emotion, touching you with the very fist note she sang, her charisma, playing with the audience etc…I saw her live for three times…I will never ever forget these moments! Mariah Carey is a superb and outstanding singer, nobody can doubt this, she is amazingly great but you can’t say she is superior to Whitney just because of counting octaves, whistle tones and other technical things…it is the whole package! It is the vocal equivalent to a crazy roller coaster ride. The most brilliant, beautiful and powerfully soulful vocals you'll ever hear...and it's LIVE. That is the exact word i used for watching and listening to her sing. Totally Mesmerizing. almost like her voice puts you into a trance. She's the only singer that ever does that to me. Can you imagine how beautiful and powerful that was live in that auditorium. If it sounds like this through the audio, i can only imagine how it sounded and felt hearing it live. You can see why the audience gave her a standing ovation.

Burnie! I love your reactions, especially to Whitney Houston. And, you are right, Whitney sang effortlessly, she was destined to sing. Singing came naturally to her. She knew her strengths, what her voice was capable of, the notes she could hit, where to sing from. So many times I see performers straining, almost painfully to sing, you can see it and hear it. When Whitney Houston sang, she seemed to be singing to you and for you, not just for the performance aspect or adoration.

@@jobuck879 Agreed. Her 1986 London, San Francisco and NY performances of 'I am changing' are literally the greatest live vocals ever captured on audio, in my not so humble opinion lol.
