Hello from Oklahoma! I just found your channel. Thanks for the video! Interesting take on the neck knife. I got some good ideas. Thank You! My grandkids are a little young yet, but I intend to teach them some of Gpa's tricks and such. And yes, being 61, I get the convenience thing all to well. It's not the years its the mileage!! I liked and subscribed. Thanks Again! God Bless!!
William Collins, thank you for this video! I have been viewing videos about neck knives, the pros and cons, variations and so forth. You, sir, speak my language...the older you get the more you look for convenience...lol. After 60+ years of backpacking, my transformation of looking "cool" and using the latest and greatest tool has gone bye-bye. Everything now is for convenience, comfort, portability and affordability (retired senior). I love my neck knives. They are 6 to 8" under my nose, in plain sight and secured. The fact that I can quickly access and deploy my tool (or weapon) is a comforting...security, I believe, is the appropriate word you used. I don't normally wear a belt so neck knives are my usual method of conveyance. I have never experienced any situation where a neck knife may have caused any concern for my safety. I will adopt your cordage ideas using 550 Cobra weave and those nite-ize biners...great idea. Dave Canterbury had a suggestion using cord locks to prevent the possibility of being "hung" by the neck cord. Anyway, Mr. Collins, I haven't gotten around to wearing my suspenders (yet!) but they are hanging in my closet ready for that special day :)
I can go ether way... Sometimes when I am chopping or bending over doing tasks the neck knife gets in my way... But I use one from time to time... Thanks for sharing
Central Oregon Survival Network Yep, as I said in the video that is a problem. I just tuck it in my shirt when bending over. Appreciate the view and comment.
Great info to consider William. I have never worn a neck knife but have often considered what benefits it may give. You answered those questions nicely here. I will have to give this a try now. Peace, Shane
Great intro to the why and how. I love my neck knives when I am hiking. When sitting down to feed the fire and prepare food, it is much easier to get to a neck knife than having it one my hip. Also nice that after I experienced the benefits, I found good use for several of my smaller fixed blade knives that I otherwise did not use that often.
Just bought me a nice little neck knife the Enzo (Brisa) necker 70 I have the kydex sheath with paracord lanyard with the break away safety clasp for around my neck and got the leather belt sheath which is how I usually carry my other knives but now always wear that necker around my neck and don't notice its there. Have to say for the price that those knives are beautifully made and the leather sheath is very good quality.
Great video,William. I dont mind my knives being around my neck. Like you said, its easier, convenient, and out of the way. In fact,I prefer it around my neck when I'm deer hunting. I hunt out of a naturally made blind so,while waiting for the deer I need my knife close(less movement if on my hip)while I do small repairs or I make buck tails and have to trim up the lures. Again, thank you
William , I found a better way to carry a neck knife , I made a sheath for my LT Wright Buckeye and other small knives where the knife sheath has a button snap and the knife hangs tip up and handle down. I put a longer soft leather cord on the sheath and carry the cord over my shoulder and the knife under my left arm. Similar to a handgun under arm holster , I find this a better and more comfortable way to carry my small fixed blade . To remove the knife I just release the button and strap and draw the knife down and out it works really well . I really enjoy your videos.
Great info. William. I just started using the neck carry. I have found it handy when skinning game and also when doing task around camp. I use a method that is a little different that prevents a lot of the knife movement when bending over. I'll try to shoot a video on it and get it posted tonight.
Food for thought. Being sceptical about neck knives, I have been dreaming up a sheath integrated into braces, like a shoulder holster. I often have a small fixed blade on the chest strap or shoulder strap of my rucksack. After seeing this I’ll give neck knives another trial. Thanks for sharing.
Traveling through brush a rough terrain I do not wear a neck knife but around camp or while doing crafts it is a great option. If you decide to go through with the sheath described my buddy Randy at www.stitchedgear.com loves making custom designed sheath systems and does fantastic heirloom quality work. Appreciate your view and thoughts.
On the point of being choked by the cord: When I was in the Marines guys would use 550 cord instead of the little chain for their dog tags. Didn’t break and didn’t pull your chest hair. Also wasn’t shiny on your neck. I didn’t like the idea of someone being able to choke me out with 550 cord since it was a combative situation so I took that normal little chain and just the sleeve of some 550. Wrap the chain up until the clasp in the 550 sleeve and then burn it a little with a lighter. It sticks to the chain, giving comfort and stealth, but is still easily breakable in an incident where you may find yourself hung up, by human or otherwise. I don’t see it actually being an issue in most scenarios, but maybe that’ll help for those who worry about it. I wear my Izula II on my neck most days just for convenience. Haven’t used my little pocket folder much since.
Good whittle William. I have been using a neck carry for years. Both my children have one as well. I prefer the upside down position for a natural reach. I carry a small, medium, and large knife. The neck is small, the belt is medium, and the strap to my leg is large. Small tasks, small knife; large tasks, large knife. As others have already mentioned, strap a knife to the suspender upside down will solve the dangle problem. I always wear a sleeveless shirt under my long sleeve shirt. Tuck in your knife under the long sleeve shirt and you will be fine. Keep up the good work boss.
You and I both like braided paracord neck lanyards. They do sell break away connectors for neck lanyards. I would be more worried about losing my neck knife if the break away accidentally came lose than being choked to death.
Appreciate your view and comment. It is a cobra weave paracord lanyard with a nite ise S hooks on either end. You can usually get the lanyards on eBay. I prefer the 21" cords.
I love my LT Wright "Little MUK" flat grind knife as a neck knife. I know it is quite small but I find myself pulling it out at restaurants to slice up veggies and other things on my plate with weird looks from other pantrents lol. Its a great kids knife also because it has a very nice.wide blade with not much of a piercing point to stab body parts with but still your able to drill in wood with it. The "Camp MUK" I think would be a great out in the woods neck knife. Your thought on that William?
littlejpl LT Makes some great knives. That is a well used and tested design. George Washington Sears or commonly referee to by his pen name “Nessmuk” made that design famous in the early 1900’s. One of my favorite butchering style blades.
Thx for the video William. I have never been much for wearing a neck knife(I always feared stabbing myself). But your thoughts on this and you showing how well it works for you gives me the thought that I need to look at this a little further. I for one value your thoughts and experience on these kinds of things. Now if you can just convince my better half I need to order a forest fatty this week, and not wait to order at fathers day, we will be all good!! LOL
I do use and like neck carry for my Svord peasant and Opinel knife and for my Hultafors or Mora. The lightweights so to speak. The fixed blades always tip down because I believe gravity works. Nice knife that first one that looks like a smatchet.
The thing I've always found to be the most annoying when it comes to carrying a neck knife, especially a larger knife, is getting it back out once you've tucked it into your shirt. I typically wear standard t-shirts with your run of the mill designs and artwork... That, or I'm wearing a some type of typical polo shirt. The real issue is when it comes to the t-shirts because the collar is a simple small round collar and it becomes very awkward trying to snake the knife back out of your shirt to use it... It often results in looking like I'm having some type of seizure trying to get the knife out of my shirt without the knife coming loose from the sheath... So yeah, a neck knife is very inconvenient when you're wearing a shirt with a small neck opening. And where I live, I can't simply walk around in town with a 4-5" bladed knife hanging openly around my neck. I'd most likely get stopped by the police.
I have one folding knife for when a fixed blade may have legality issues but other than that I much prefer a solid small fixed blade, I like neckers but another great way to tote one is in a pocket sheath knives ship free makes a great one and most of my kydex i request to have a nice flat bottom and a hook to grab the pocket works great
Any place looking for a tool thats around your neck is easy to find. The other reason is if your best knife is the one on you, and if I have a knife on my hip and I have a neck knife, then I Have two knives on me. and usually on a multi carry of different size, I carry the larger knife on person, for instance my favorite go to knives my Rodent 7 and the Rodent 4 the Rodent 7 is on my hip, even when I carry my Rodent 9 and my Ratmandu the Rodent 9 is on my hip, the reason being, if you get in the habit to carry the larger knife and your in shape, and if you are not in shape to carry a larger knife, then I suggest you get in shape before carrying a small knife on your hip just incase you need to depend on your knife to survive if you get seperated from your pack or camp.
Ok I watched 13 of the 15 mins. I think I got your points. It was a good video & very useful. I apologise for my earlier judgement. Feedback: #1. In Great Britain we call them braces. Suspenders are those sexy tights that women wear held up by pretty things - you know what I mean. So that was funny 😂 #2. More serious now, I've a woman (I let her out sometimes 😂) and I wonder how a neck knife would work for her ? I'm sure you see the two complications. As for me, I think I'm going for the neck knife. Thanks Bud 👍🏻👋🏻
Awesome, appreciate the second chance and welcome to the channel. There are many women who use a neck knife and some even have large complications. 😁 but still find the neck knife very convenient. It will take some getting used to but she should at least give it a trial run I think. Weight seams to be the main problem so starting with a very light knife like a small mora may be the best. Thanks again!
Thanks for that William, has set my mind - neck knives all the way. I really need us to carry a knife, a ferro rod, and a pencil torch at all times, on our upcoming expedition, for safety. Along with a compass, which we can get on a watch, I feel those items (along with a Personal Locator Beacon) are the absolute essentials just in case one or both of us get lost. It's unlikely we will get lost but safe & sorry etc. Fyi, nobody ever got hung by a neck knife, ever. Good day Sir.
Say Heah William, I put a ball chain on my Mora 510 and just like you, The Cruxafix and my Ball Chain that I put the Mora 510 and I feel naked without it, I wear mine all the time even under my T-shirt, But neck knives are a part of my carry regardless. They say the best Survival Knife is the one that's on you at the time, We'll with my carry, I have two knives on me. My belt knife and my neck knife. I don't have alot of neck knives per say, But in cold weather or with a shirt any reasonable size and especially not too heavy, I will wear it around my neck, Like my Skookum, or my SISU, but my Stromeng Bhuku STAK, and my Mora's
I bend over too much, although I must be getting taller in my old age because the ground seems to be getting further away. I always carry a pocket knife a lighter and a small flashlight I am in town often and I think wearing a neck knife might cause some people distress. What they don't know will not bother them. I also carry a gun, I am sure that would bother people in Ohio, they would never know. I tried suspenders but went to bib overalls much more comfortable and lots of pockets for a hidden fixed blade.
Say Heah In med school, the tool's we used the most, We wore it around our nevk. So a neck knife is second nature. Infact I don't include it in my Trio. To me a Trio is a Knife, Hatchet/Saw. One Tool Option Is The Knife and perhap's a neck knife or a Folder. Multi Tool's don't count at all, Their a mechanical tool.,,..,,.
I don't own a neck knife , but if I did , it would without a doubt be pulled down out of the sheath , then up. In my personal opinion , convenience , safety and quicker to deploy. But I also would be carrying a horizontal bushcraft on the belt. So my neck carry would be a much smaller knife. You make some very nice knives Sir. Thank you for your videos.
