Bryan whittles a chain from bass wood. He's never whittled a chain before.

Cheating is a pretty strong word to use just because someone is doing it differently than you would. He didn’t misrepresent or hide what tools he was using, and “whittling” has a pretty broad definition today. If you didn’t see what you expected to see, then move on - nobody is forcing you to watch it nor to leave your scat behind. Practice “no trace” viewing unless you see something you like.

Great job Bryan, that’s amazing! It’s sort of like knitting a FairIsle sweater, once it’s done it will be a long time, if ever, that you do another one!

The man with the knife....How long did it take to seperate one chain link just with the knife ???
@amuckdesign
@amuckdesign 9 месяцев назад
Well, I didn’t time myself. Guess all I can say is that it took longer than expected. It’s a lot of tiny little cuts.

Thank you! I’m using Basswood in this video. It’s soft and easy to cut. You can usually find it on line in different dimensions. The knives I’m using are made by Helvie Knives in the United States. Hope you try whittling. It’s a lot of fun.

Use the manual hand saw to separate the links. The result is Very good.

Just one question......WHAT IS THE DIMENSIONS OF THE WOOD??That would have been a nice start.
@bryanring8110
@bryanring8110 2 года назад
Hi Jon, it started as a 1.5”x 1.5”x 13.25” piece of poplar. That’s just what I had laying around. Of course it’s up to you what size to start with. The process is the same.

Can u sell a piece that’s drawn up so I can whittle it. I don’t have all the saws.

I have been thinking about that actually and will definitely let you know.
@jimjakosh2506
@jimjakosh2506 3 года назад
Since you used a coping saw for the outside corners, you could have used it to cut the links apart by sliding the blade through and then re attaching to the frame.
@amuckdesign
@amuckdesign 3 года назад
You are absolutely right. My plan though was to try and whittle as much as possible.

oval links instead of rectangles !!!
@amuckdesign
@amuckdesign 3 месяца назад
Yes well, rectangle links are just a bit easier with a knife than oval links are. As this was my first attempt I figured I’d keep it simple.

Sawing all the corners with a machine, boring all the holes..... That's not whittling a chain! Whittling a chain, you remove all the wood you don't need, with a knive! Not with a machine! 😁

Hello, thank you for watching. I completely understand your point of view. When I carved my ball in a cage I only used knives but that was a much smaller project and therefore didn’t take too much time to complete. If I would have whittled the chain with only a knife I’d probably still be working on it and have lost interest in the project. I only called it whittling because the majority of the time spent on it was only using a knife. The world record holder for longest wooden chain ever made used nothing but power tools. I believe he did this only because of time restraints. Everyone chooses how much time they want to spend on projects their working on. I have lots of interests so that’s why I chose to use power tools to remove the bulk of the wood. I also think only using a knife would have resulted in a really long video.😆😆

@@amuckdesign Over the years I've carved over a dozen chains, most of them with a crosspiece for an anchor attached on one end, and a cage with one or two balls carved on the other end. I've done them all three ways - cut from a block that's been sawn into "+" shape, cut from a rectangular block, and cut from a rounded tree branch. If you wanted to be absolutely purist about it, you could argue that ANY tool modification to the tree branch is not whittling, including splitting a section of the tree branch off with an ax. It depends on what you are trying to prove, and once you've proved that you can do it in its most primitive form - the tree branch - then it is just extra work to go through all of that effort again, just so you can start doing the non-drudgery part, which is the carving and whittling. So, no, I don't agree that using hand-held woodworking tools is not whittling. I almost always start with a "+" shaped blank of wood, though after that I personally stick to hand tools such as a drill bit mounted in a pin vise for drilling holes and various chisels in order to obtain flat-bottomed surfaces. For me, as long as all surfaces on the final result show knife carving marks, then it's whittling. It's all woodworking with hand tools, and those who want to set special purist conditions on the activity are welcome to spend the enormous amount of extra time actually demonstrating what they so glibly preach to others. As you say, "Everyone chooses how much time they want to spend on projects they're working on." Best wishes, and thanks for the informative video - SLOphoto1

@@SLOphoto1 thank you for the reply. I’m glad someone with as much experience as yourself could enjoy the video. I think you really hit the nail on the head when you said “once you’ve proven you can do it in it’s most primitive form, then it is just extra work to go through all that effort again”. I tend to like using power tools almost as much as hand tools, and I think there’s a time and place for most every tool. For me it usually boils down to time constraints and whether or not I’m working on a project just to have fun. It can also be fun to see what I or other people are capable of using whatever might be available to us at the time. Thanks again for your comment.

Use a nice hard wood instead of the nasty soft stuff !!!
@amuckdesign
@amuckdesign 3 месяца назад
The “nasty soft stuff” is much easier to cut with a knife. As this was my first attempt, I thought I’d keep it simple. Besides, it’s not like anyone will be attaching an anchor to it or anything.

😆 I have no doubt it could be done, but I’d be using very soft stone and power tools. And I’d need some time off work.

@@amuckdesign I used carve tufa stone to make as mold to pour molten silver into. Some stone is like tufa is easier to crave than wood. be cool to have a stone and a wood carved chain and be an interesting vid. there are carved stone chains on temples in India i saw when i was there

@@johnrenner7645 I was thinking some kind of limestone, tufa would probably work great. If you have some around you should try it. I’d really like to see it.

A Better Way to Do That to Hand carve it with a Knife. Otherwise, that's cheating.
