My wife’s mother’s family are Jamaican Jews. Their family name is Portuando and are sefardic. A long time ago they moved there from Cuba after escaping the inquisition . Her father however was of Ashkenazi descent (Solomon). My family is Belarusian and Iranian. B’h we are Torah observant and love all our brothers
What is pirate?? You say 'so badass' because you don't know enough about pirates. Henry Morgan was a slave trader - as most pirates were. If he was friends with Henriques, then it means that Henriques condoned slavery. That's not at all "badass!!" You got that wrong. If a Jamaican of African descent can trace heritage to a Jewish father, that means his African mother had children by a Jewish man. That does not mean that the woman was his wife. It most likely means that she was his property. Many people of African descent in the Caribbean and Americas can trace blood lines to various European cultures. This is because the European salve owners or workers on plantations slept with the African women. That is all it means. And again, those women were not their wives, but were most likely thier property. The Jews funded the slave trade to a great extent. I must concur with the comments above to state the the symbolism that is used by the Rastafarians in Jamaica is originating from Ethiopia. As a 75 year old Jamaican, I saw my parents and grand parents practicing: the men wore beards, they were circumcised 8 days after birth, they covered their heads at all times (look at the old pictures of the slaves in Jamaica), the women were not allowed to cook for men if they were mensturating. They also had a certain diet. For example, they ate only Sea food with Scales, only meat that have Hoof and were not allowed to eat Pork. Because of slavery, we were prohibited from practicing our Culture...However, some continued to wear Dreadlocks as depicted on the walls in Egypt. We are Jamaican Jews.

many ex-slaves took on the names of their masters both during and after slavery ended. They also simply chose surnames that they liked. Having a European surname does not necessarily mean that you are connected by blood to that family. To be sure, you need to do a DNA test.

Henriques, They're Portuguese. Most Jews in Jamaica are Sephardi. My Mum's family are descendants of those Portuguese Jews. I took my DNA w 23&me and my Mum was correct, it showed Portuguese (Sephardi) from Madeira in my results. St. Elizabeth had a large Sephardi cemetery in Lacovia. I don't know what it looks like today.
