Monfils on the list because of his lack of wins and then having Jimmy Connors who knew nothing but winning on the same list? Suspect.

I disagree with Monfils because I never see media claiming him to be better than he is, or expecting him to win titles that he can't. A lot of us WANTED him to win more and really establish himself as a top ten, but I always saw people being very realistic with the level he was at.

Exactly ONE thing is overrated about Connors: the most titles record, because he won so many of those in tournaments where he never had to play another top-20 player. Otherwise, he was without a doubt the best player in the world at his peak, managed to play at a high level for longer than any of his peers, and almost guaranteed would have won a calendar year grand slam if he'd been permitted to play the French Open in '74.

Saying that Sampras surpassed Becker on grass in "No time" is really not accurate. Boris Becker is four years older than Pete Sampras. He won two grand slam titles before his 20th birthday and had four grand slam titles by his 22nd birthday (the same number of slam titles that Nadal had at that age.) Boris broke up with his longtime girlfriend at the beginning of 1990 and his mind wasn't focused on the game in the same way that it had been. Becker won 12 consecutive grand slam matches before he lost to Agassi in the semifinals of the 1991 French Open. That's equal to the first half of Djokovic's legendary 2011 season. The guy was one of the best tennis players of his era.

People tend to forget that Kournikova was back in the day one of the most promising players. Yes, she got a ton of money for her looks, but it was not only her looks, she was a junior GS champion, and played Wimbledon semifinals at 15. She was supposed to be one of the next big things with Venus, Serena and Lucic (Hingis was a reality back then). But she was blinded by the fashes and then there were injuries and she became miss double fault and all derailed. Emma is in danger of being in the same situation. Of course she won a GS (let's be real, a player like Emma would never won a GS back in the 90's or early 00's when a lot of top players fought for the GS) but the impression is that it came too soon and she is not remotely prepared. And Gasquet probably gives the award. Back in the day he was supposed to be the next big thing. He was going to rival Nadal for years (for some people he was better than Rafa) but that never happened. In my oppinion French federation simply puts too much pressure in their young stars and that don't do them any favours
@rodrigoodonsalcedocisneros9266
Gascquet was the teenage sensation before Rafa started showing how unbeatable he was on clay. I think Gascquet, with his mediocre serve+1 tools was never gonna amount for much in the long run, but the junior circuit was not prepared enough to expose his weaknesses, that's why he usually demolished everybody there with his monster backhand. Once he entered the ATP Tour, reality kicked in and he refused to improve his chops so his career got stagnated.
@yomismo74
@yomismo74 Год назад
@@rodrigoodonsalcedocisneros9266 Not exactly. Richard and Rafa were rivals on under 14 category. Both won Les petits as. Then they took different parhs. Gasquet was number one on Juniors while Rafa barely played Juniors. On the pro ranking Rafa was alwaya ahead but Richard was pretty closer. Both suffered injuries early inntheir career. Then 2005 Clay season started and the rest is history. The main problem with Gasquet is that his tennis didn't evolved. His backhand is amazing anyway

*Raducanu* is currently massively overrated but she’s young. She has done nothing on the court since her 2021 USO title. Too many off the court distractions. *Connors* is NOT overrated. Some like to talk about his competition but there were a lot of great players in the 1970s. His game was revolutionary. You don’t win 109 titles, win 1,274 matches and 82% of your matches by being overrated. He had longevity and a killer instinct. He was banned and then participate in FO. Outside of Australians few competed at the AO in the 1970s.

I agree with what you said about Raducanu. This was her first full year on tour, and while the US Open championship was partly due to luck, the talent and skills are definitely there. She needs to find the right team and stick with them. I would swap her for Sofia Kenin. In all honesty WTA is seriously lacking consistency. If we are going by the quality, perhaps Iga would make it such a list in couple of years simply because she's been consistent while her contemporaries have not. This is not to take anything away from her talent and achievements this year. I don't know if the same can be said about ATP because with Alcaraz and Sinner the new generation is really coming to the forefront.

Andy Roddick is def not overrated. Maybe under archived because of the lack of grand slams. In my opinion, Rod Laver, Margaret Smith-Court and Jimmy Connors should not be on this list. If anything, I would say that Roy Emerson and Ken Rosewall are "underrated", because we always talk about Rod Laver but then we forget about the other two. Rosewall won 8 slams in the late 50s and early 70s, and was a professional in between. Emerson won 12 individual slams, all in the 60s, and never became a professional (until maybe late in his career, when the Open Era began). Jimmy Connors (or even Roger Federer) should not have to apologise for the fact that his major rivals were several years younger than him. You can only play against whomever is at the other side of the net. If the field of opponents is weak, it's not your fault. I see some parallels between Carlos Alcaraz and the start of Roger Federer's run of slams back in Wimbledon 2003. It took Federer a while to have serious contenders in Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. There is a lot of talk about Jannik Sinner and Holger Rune, but who knows, maybe the true rivals of Carlos Alcaraz are in their early teens right now.

I may surprise you, but I think Carlos Alcaraz is a bit overrated. The guy makes a huge number of unforced errors, plays spectacularly and has a lot of winners, but that's not all. I remember Mats Wilander raving about him. For me, the guy may be a good tennis player, but he won't stay on top like Federer, Djokovic and Nadal for a long time.

The first name that came to my mind is Zverev. I agree that the late 90's / early 2000's era was rather poor, and your list misses Guillermo Coria. I'll also add Andy Murray. He deserves being the fourth of the big four much less than Wawrinka. As a french, I agree with what you said about Gasquet and Monfils : they didn't achieve all their potential, unlike Tsonga and Simon.

Are you guys kidding about Margareth Court being recast? This woman has won as many as 64 Grand Slam titles in singles, doubles and mixed doubles. In singles alone she has won 24 titles. That's more than Djokovic currently has. No one else has accomplished something like that. In addition, she has won a classic Grand Slam. Roger, Nadal and Djokovic only play singles and still have fewer singles titles than this woman. Margareth is probably the best and most underrated tennis player in the history of the sport. Usually when the best female tennis players are mentioned they are: Martina Navratilova, Steffi Graf and Serena Williams, and hardly anyone remembers Margareth Court. Besides, she won 191 singles titles. Roger has only 103.

Roddick played superbly in 2009 Wimbledon final, he adjusted his game and instead of instinctively running into the fire with serve and volley he adjusted his game superbly. And just like in 2019 Wimbledon dished out a cruel results 2009 did the same....in both instances the better player lost....also he consistently made good runs in the slams...he should not even be in this list.

How dare you call Monfils overrated!!! 🤣 But seriously, no one was ever touting him as one of the greats or a grand slam contender - so not overrated at all. He's been accurately rated as a walking, jumping, running highlight reel and pure joy to watch. Dimitrov definitely overrated - both in "baby Fed" nickname and "best looking" on tour. He's a talented tennis player, some great highlight shots, cutie pie for sure. But we got Matteo Berrettini and Stefanos Tsitsipas on tour. I mean, get real. Is anyone really calling Margaret Court goat? I don't think so.

Rodger Federer is overrated. I know he is exceptional player but a lot of tennis fans putting him in the GOAT race with Nadal and Novak. He doesn't deserve it. Most of his GS came at weak era(like you mentioned) Safin,Hewitt, Roddick. Novak and Rafa were too young at his peak(2003-2007). Ones they got matured and raised their game he was outplayed.

@orchidpanda2253

Well, there was Marat Safin, former world no. 1 in 2003 and 2004 and then there's a man named Rafael Nadal... you know, he has 22 slams now. Nadal won his first slam in 2005 when Federer had 5. So according to math, Federer won 15 slams while Nadal, Roddick and later Djokovic, Murray, Wawrinka were around.

Court is totally overrated. On top of being a bigot. She cleaned up at the recreational AO of the 60's. The fact that she, unfortunately for the rest of the world, ended up with the most grand slams ever is the only reason anyone ever considers her as much as they do. Clearly she was an excellent player, but so far less than her record indicates on paper.

If you are gonna put Jimmy Connors in the overrated, you better put Federer in there as well. Federer also arrived at a time when there was little competition in tennis and set records against guys who were either retiring and barely played against guys who were at the top at that time. Then when Nadal came around the story changed. And when Djokovic arrived the story took a full twist.
@taxationistheft7

Ehh Federer still played against nadal, Djokovic and Murray and was winning even a few years back. Djokovic really ruined his legacy because the last what 5 finals they played he had lost, a lot probably do to age and what not but still. I don’t see why he put Connor’s in there though

Talking about overrated, no list would be complete without the "Big 3". Yes, they are great tennis players, but they all play(ed) in the weakest era professional tennis ever had, with essentially only three players capable of winning slams. Plus, for many years Federer was literally the only truly complete player on the tour, with 99% of his opponents being one-dimensional baseline robots. Back in the 1970-1990s, there were dozens of complete tennis players around. That´s straight up unthinkable today. And don´t forget that, on top of it all, today´s top players are protected very securely by the seeding system with 32 players (instead of 16, as normal). That way it´s made sure that their [major] torunaments effectively start at the semifinal stage most of the time.
