This video was filmed in the evening of April 2024 at Jardim da Flora (Flora Park) in Macau. This was my first visit after so many years. I never thought the park still kept primates until I browsed the renewed website of IAM (Macau Municipal Affairs Bureau). As soon as I learned that the park, which is quite accessible from where I live, has a group of Rhesus macaques, I immediately visited the zoo to see them. I don't know much about Rhesus macaques, and I don't know how many of them are kept at this park in total. I have zero knowledge of their background story. I just started filming these beautiful creatures. I would like to find out more about them as time goes on. I will do my best to identify each individual as much as possible, so it deepens my understanding as well as yours about the species. In this video, the macaques are having meals. You can observe how a Rhesus macaque eats its stored food from its cheek pouch. They have beautiful red buttocks with Their fur is gray and brown. There may be some individuals of different species or hybrids. I am waiting for IAM to reply to my queries. I hope you enjoy the video.
I am a bit concerned with the fact that the park is now open 24 hours a day to the public. This will be against the animal welfare of the primates and other animals living there. I hope the bureau will take the necessary measures to ensure the privacy of the animals at the park.

About Rhesus Macaque
Macaca mulatta
Habitat: throughout mainland Asia
Life span: 25-30 years (40 years in captivity)
IUCN Red List: Least Concern
Rhesus macaques are sexually dimorphic. Females measure approximately 47cm in length (crown-rump length without tail) and weigh 5-8 kg. Males measure 53 cm and weigh 8-15 kg. They have hairless red buttocks with calloused, sitting pads called “ischial callosities.” They are diurnal, arboreal and terrestrial, and skilled swimmers. Humans have greatly benefited from the species as they have been used extensively in medical and biological research on human and animal health-related topics.

Thank you, Karin, for introducing us to this fascinating group of primates. They are so unique and exotic, and especially intriguing because of the mix of individuals in the group! I love their intelligent eyes and how they eat from their cheek pouches! As they walk around the exhibit, they look like dogs to me from the side. The elderly gentlemen who ate last had a face that looked like a human grandfather to me! Thank you again for introducing us to this group, and I look forward to hearing any more information you may learn about them from the zoo!😊

Thank you Merilynne for your warm and kind comment, as always. Yes, I agree. That older male looks like a human grandpa with a thick beard. I hope I can get their background history, etc., from the bureau so we can deepen our understanding on the species. Have a great day!🐒🌺
