Splitting hardwood for 30 years. Tried everything. Got Fiskers long handle slitting maul 2 years ago. GAME CHANGER! I don't use my splitter anymore unless I'm sick or hurt. Each year we produce about 6 cords of maple, red and black oak and a lot of ash. My wife can split with this tool. Awesome. Good luck and keep up the great work. Thanks for a great channel.

Really like the result I see here as your applying those new shooting and editing techniques to the "good ol'" content topics that make your channel so loved. Keep up the good work! (P.S. Thanks for bringing back the double axe bumpers, which are my favorite.)

In Mississippi we burn hardwood, mainly oak, and the maul is what works best for the hardwoods. Just aim for a split in the round and swing fast. What I've always used is more of a concave blade. It's what I've used since I was a kid, back when they invented dirt.
@ecleveland1

Funny thing is, I still don't know if this person was accusing me of reading his comment and then repeating what they said or if they were just thinking the same thing and I commented before they did. When I comment on a video I am usually writing the comment before the video is over and I don't read the other comments until I'm done commenting myself. Have no idea why his reply to me did not show up. One other thing I know about the maul I use is that my grandfather back around 1976-1977 told me not to mess with it and leave it alone. Well as soon as he was out of site I picked it up and started hitting a log with it. Next thing I know I've hit my big toe and have to go to the emergency room. No real harm, bleed somewhat, but it scared my grandmother. I learned to spread my feet further apart after that.

I've been heating with wood only since 1983. I split seasoned wood all winter long with a 12lb Ace Hardware wedge. Gnarly, knotty, twisty Colorado pines...But I'm an XXL man. I wouldn't expect smaller people to appreciate the raw power of that steel wedge like I do. I split 6 cords every winter...a few hours at a time. My wife swears the wood "jumps apart" in anticipation of my strike. Haha.a..a. From 1983 to 1999 I used a Chopper I mechanical ax-type splitter. The springs didn't last long but I found the tool to work just as well without them if I used a smooth stroke. I'm not as young as I used to be...so I started thinking about how a smaller, older, weaker, future me would split wood...and now I love watching splitting videos. :-) I'm sticking with the inertia vectoring efficiency of the big wedge on a handle for now though. Also, I see splitting videos that split into tiny pieces...I agree the big 12# wedge isn't right for that. I use a Sedore USA downdraft stove that can handle pieces up to 12" in diameter...but I always split a 12" piece, once...I don't chop it into sticks. For the chunks that are larger than 12" I'll split 3-4 times. I also split every piece down to about 3" diameter. Mostly I split the small stuff for sport than for practical use. Thanks for all the info!

Cody, What do you do with your bark? When I was growing up we stoked the fire for night burn with bark and lowered the air flow. In the morning when I went to the furnace to reload and open up air flow to increase the house temp the bark was usually all still there in full shape, just all red. It would collapse when I added new wood on it but I didn't have to relight the fire.

I have used the old grandpa American 6 lb maul all my life. We used to cut and spilt 20 cord per year. We found that where one strikes the target of the maul matters as well as the ambient temperature. The best splitting for green birch was -30 F and striking right on the edge and of course if one was splitting what we called "rubber wood" or heavily knotted we would use wedges.

When I was a wee lad I preferred my grandad's maul over an axe because I did not have the upper body strength and agility to swing the axe fast enough to split through most logs. With the maul all i had to do was get it above me and guide it down. Now I prefer my axe much more because I can split much faster and with more precision.

+Wranglerstar I would think that the big American would be better for the big huge old round.... but I still would want to have the small splitting axe for smaller things.... swinging that heavy guy for cords of wood can be tough, even for a young guy like me (23 yrs old)... I keep both by my side when I split..... as for the lever axe... I've seen that review... terrible....

Here in Tennessee we split a lot of Hickory and Oak. A maul is the way to go, the kind you have in this video is a 6 pound. I prefer a 6 pound but with a concave grind instead of a convex. The concave bevels really sink deep before busting the log.

I do firewood as a full time job here on Vancouver Island, splitting roughly the same stuff. in my experience I find a 36" handle on a 4.5lbs splitting axe works best. on the bigger stuff I use my 24" arvika on one side in the holding wood then go back the the other side with the 36" and work on the holding there. but as you say, bias and opinion. I've used this style axe to split about 500 bush cord a year.

After your original video about the splitting axe I found a local store that had one and they were having trouble selling it and the Husqavarna splitting maul! A lightweight maul that has a similar blade design to the axe. I told the store owner I would take them as a pair for 120.00 andt they went for it. I really like the axe but the maul is great for knots and such.

How many wedges can you use with a splitting axe? A Maul should always have a wedge or two and a prybar, which imo makes it far better for splitting large rounds than an axe with a poll that's not hardened.

Hahaha, I recognize the feeling you portrait in your video, fall has started, and you get that sense of happiness, a playful feeling!!! Good to see! Such a great time, the winter! My thoughts on the axes, well, i have chopped a whole lot of firewood (mostly hardwoods like Quercus robur, Quercus rubra, Fagus sylvatica), and I can't really say I have a preference for one or the other. I own a Husqvarna like yours, I probably have three of four mauls, and.......... I'm almost ashamed to confess to you.... I also own one of those hated Fiskar X27's.... :D For splitting bigger and heavier wood, I usualy start with a splitting maul, and when the wood gets thinner, I switch over to the Husqvarna and/or Fiskars. I never chop right trough the middle of a log though, I always chunck of bits from the side. So in theory, it shouldnt really make a differance... Except for when you encounter wood that hasn't got a straight grain, around knots and such Thanks for another great video. I also have a few attempts of making a video online, but I never get them to look so natural, you are very good at that! Cheers from the Netherlands!

Hey Cody. A little off topic here but if you see this question I would appreciate it if you could spare the time to reply. I was wondering if you also make all of your own furniture. (Eg. Tables chairs.) I'm interested in one day starting out in making wooden furniture and if that's something you do I think a video would be very welcome in the wranglerstar community. :)

+Britannain He does not. But there are plans for a dining room table (maybe this winter)....He'd love to but other things have priority right now. MrsW

What's the answer for an optimal tool inbetween a splitting axe and a slitting maul under 300 usd?

It could be that one of those will better in the doug fir and perhaps the other would do better in hard woods. So perhaps you should expand your test to include other species.

There is a man by the name of Craig Barr on eBay that demonstrates the capabilities of the axes he makes they are awesome! I wish you would buy and try one out I think you will enjoy them, made out of Damascus or regular steel

Split on a hard surface ie splitting stump. The soft ground is absorbing all your energy. You'll become friends fast with a 12# maul if you had to deal with wood such as mulberry.
