The chess24 Legends of Chess is the 4th stage of the $1 million Magnus Carlsen Chess Tour and features Magnus Carlsen and his predecessors as World Champion Vishy Anand and Vladimir Kramnik. It consists of two stages, a 10-player preliminary, where each player plays each other once, followed by a knockout among the top 4. Prelim ties are played as 4-game rapid matches, while knockout ties are the best of 3 such matches. The prize fund is $150,000, with $45,000 for first place, while the winner also qualifies for the $300,000 Grand Final.
The time control is 15 minutes for all moves with a 10-second increment from move 1. The winner of a preliminary tie decided in rapid games gets 3 points. If the score is 2:2 an Armageddon game is played, where White has 5 minutes to Black's 4 but a draw counts as a win for Black. A winner in Armageddon gets 2 match points, while the loser gets 1. The knockout format is the same except before Armageddon there are two 5+3 blitz games. No draw offers are allowed before move 40. Official website: chess24.com/tour

Dude you gotta see Ivanchuk vs Shirov. Or Ivanchuk vs Kasparov where he basically taunted Kasparov with his knight. It’s not like one or two games decide a persons playing style, but if there are some games that get me weirdly inspired to try something insane, it’s got to be a Chucky.

what kind of player is Ivanchuk to give chills down the spines of champions? I mean, you review all the games of every player possible, every ivanchuk game, and yet when you face him it will always be a New Game. He must be the player who contributed most to New Games. I think that if Ivanchuk had kept his queen on the sixth rank it would have maintained the pin of Carlsen's knight against his queen. Ivanchuk could even grab the a-pawn to create a passed pawn threat. By moving the queen off the sixth rank he removed the only significant compression of Black's position.

If you saw this armageddon, they both have only about 20s on the clock and Ivanchuk had better position also confirmed by the commentators. If he would have more time I think he would win this. (When I saw my feeling was clearly that he would win for sure. I was a bit sad about.)

09:52 for white it was better to move queen from f2 to e1 attacking knight in e4 protecting knight in c3
@lequocviet672
@lequocviet672 4 года назад
Then after black traded the knight, he definitely wins an extra f5 rook or else gets a free knight and mess the white king position up, i think.

Armageddon definitely feels heavily favourable to Black, so it pretty much *is* decided by the initial coin toss at that high of a level, honestly these people could force a draw in their sleep if they wanted it from the start(there's a reason draws are so incredibly common). the 1 minute difference isn't enough by a long shot to make the difference, especially when white is forced to play so aggressively and hope for the best that some plan works out just going into shorter and shorter time formats until someone comes out on top would be enough honestly

Being a minute up in armageddon does give you opportunities i think, but they still need to be calculated, and there is many posssibility to do it wrong . How does that give you the upper hand? Black can just use almost the same amount of time to find surprising moves.. only my thoughts

I think it's awesome because we finally get to see our super GMs go All Out to win the match rather than just agreeing to a boring draw. In Armageddon, even boring super GMs have to go all out to win. That's so cool!

Ne7 Qe8, Nxc7 axb5 the Knight on c8 is trapped and if either Nxb6 or Nxd6 for a Desperado move just c takes. It's 2 knights for a pawn and a rook. The c pawn is also pinned to the Queen and black gets the semi-open a file while directly attacking the a pawn.
