I'm delighted that you showed this game. Both players had to have nerves of steel, and Fabiano's nerves and calculations prevailed! My guess is that Fabiano has prepared something else for Candidates Part II whenever that occurs.

The position reminds me of the one from Najdorf. Sharp., opposite side castling, attack on kings, . Wow. What a delicacy. This is just what Dr. King prescribed. For this Sunday afternoon. Lol Thanks. Very much enjoyed it.

Yes. Obviously there hasn't been much over-the-board activity, but he has restricted his online playing, no doubt focusing on preparing for the Candidates.

A helpful note for beginners might be to clarify that after 23. Qxg6 b3 white cannot take the knight because of Qxb6 Qa1# mate, and after 24. Be1 c4 white taking the knight will after Qxb6 Qa1+ end similarly in a nice check mate: Kd2 Qxb2# with black’s pawns and white’s own pieces blocking any escape.

Fun game with fun gimmicks but the most impressive gameof Round 2 was... wait for it... Guijarra - Carlsen. This was an upset. To play Magnus equal in the opening, middlegame, and endgame and achieve a draw was outstanding.

DOnchenko, Daniel, DOnchenko! Almost all Ukrainian-like last names have stress on the first syllable. For example, mine as well - MIshchenko, not MishchEnko... sorry, personal :))

I think you should write rather 'DONchenko'. That would be the first syllable.

Here we go again, the eternal pronunciation debate! Alexander Donchenko was born in Moscow but moved to Germany as a young child. I doubt whether his name is pronounced in the 'correct' way in Germany, and it certainly isn't in west London :) So, thanks for the info, I will certainly pronounce it as you describe when I am next in Eastern Europe.

@@PowerPlayChess as you wish. I gave this info on pronunciation since I was under impression you're always keen on naming players the most precise way. You're one of those few English-speaking commentators who pronounce "Nepomniachtchi" very accurately :) For me living in Western Europe is always a pleasure when somebody pronounces my name correctly according to how it originally sounds, but not how western people use to pronounce eastern-european names.
