Never thought I'd see Fabi play a KID

But he's played it fairly frequently throughout his life. It's not a main weapon or anything but it's definitely a known part of his rediculously wide repertoire.

He had a great win with it against Hikaru in an online tournament last year. That was so exciting to watch.

I love these games that break through the sometimes stodgy and inflexible strategic dogmas of the venerable Soviet school, two bishops, strong dragon bishop etc to mix things up. Of course Fabi is informed by the latest computer analysis, especially the neural nets, but still I detect a bit of a romantic swindler spirit in this one.

Fabi's classical chess games has transcended into something scary and chaotic. A level most mortal chess master dare not to thread.

While the elite chess field was online blitzin', Fabiano was in his lab cooking. :-)

Once in a while having the pair of bishops is rather a burden than an advantage...

I am a KID player myself but I never would have the guts to exchange the Bg7 for the Nc3 even now that I've seen this game. Wonderful commentary as always, Daniel.

You are for real one of the most skillful "chess explainers". Thank you! For the opening: Bishop g4 a booster for the KID? Dont think so...

Chigorin would be proud, just giving up both bishops to obtain two knights and finishing with a great attack. :) I remember Mr. King also said in one of his videos, that Russians in 50s and 60s researched 2 knights vs 2 bishop middlegames and found it had potential.

Great video as always Danny! As Black I would have been worried about the ending where white has the 2 bishops versus 2 knights, but Black has the extra pawn. Where you say the position is "balanced," I'm feeling very nervous as Black.
@ericrobinson7184
@ericrobinson7184 3 года назад
Well, Polgar mentioned having studied the Bg5 move, in one her games. And their where numerous GM's who sacked the kings bishop for "air" to let the the nights breadth. Sure, he may have saw a computer use the same methodology, or he could have through personal study of KIDs, realized the value of combining the two ideas into a cohesive long term strategy. As as old head, I applaud this game.

I'm pretty sure @kingscrusher showed very similar line played by a computer in TCEC a few months ago. Maybe played by Leela or some other neural network engine.
@azice6034
@azice6034 3 года назад
Maybe that’s where fabiano got this idea from
@diggitus
@diggitus 3 года назад
The problem a lot of the time is you have to play like a computer to follow up correctly on a computer idea. I wonder how long it took Fabi to convince himself not just that he was fine (after blockading with Ne5 and g5) but that he could play for a win even at the cost of opening the position. Pulling that off reliably seems beyond the reach of most players.
@milankotevski1663
@milankotevski1663 3 года назад
@@diggitus Fabiano does not belong to the "most players" category, though.
@diggitus
@diggitus 3 года назад
@@milankotevski1663 Well, obviously. :) By the way when I said I wondered how long it took him to decide on this, I mean prior to the game. If he only spent six minutes on ...Bxc3!?! during the game I assume he was just convincing himself he was still where he thought he was, not coming up with the idea for the first time.

Daniel: I have a couple of ideas for future mugs: Compensation - Have a pawn in the middle of a coin with similar coins of different sizes all with pawns on the face progressively fading into the background. Rakes the Board - Have a "muscular " Bishop facing off in the distance with an arrow coming from the Bishop's base and passing over a checkerboard pattern

There is another tweet that they played this position in October, Fabi took on c3 and doubled the pawns on c-file. This time Radek covered c3, probably felt good about it... then...

I believe Fischer started to favor knights over bishops in his later years, I wonder is Fabiano was influenced by that at all. Also, I think there was something similar played in the recent computer championship, maybe that was his inspiration when he mentions 'seeing the idea in similar positions'.

Caruana plays chess like a super-computer, he is the only that can surprise you in 8 moves from now, without realizing the 7 moves were just falling to perfecting in move 8. Fabi DEE-SOUL. CHESS SOUL.
