Everything about Escanor just comes together so well: like the sun, he stands over everyone. Also like the sun, there is nobody like him in both character and power. The lion is correlated to the sun in mythology and represents a king, seeing as Escanor is a former prince of his own kingdom. Much like a real lion, he risks his own life for the sake of his pride (a group of lions is called a pride).

Actually it’s because of his glorious magical power ‘sunshine!’ The magic power increases the users strength and stamina with the rise and fall of the sun while emitting insane heat. The original wielder of this power was one of the four arch angels. Mael the Sun. It was said he was killed during the holy war. And the power was thought lost, but the power sunshine acts much like Mjolnir (Thor’s hammer.)In that it sought out a suitable host. Low and behold escanor, the lion sin of pride.

I really love how the show plays on the nuances of the sins. Arrogance and low self esteem are two sides of the same coin. Having one's self value often in comparison to others. Yet Escanor also displays the two virtues often confused for low self esteem or arrogance/wrongpride. He is meek/humble by night and exuding confidence by day. Note that his meek/humble nature is not in conflict with with confidence the slightest because he never actaully self depreciates himself at night. Some say humility often is in association to truth. He sees the situation for what it is and doesnt ever waiver his self value becasue of it.
