I agree. Though I knew his was a cover because I remember he's 1st, his version is smoother. Crazy thing is, when his 1st came out, I didn't think much of it. Til one day I listened to it in detail, so smooth. But that was his style.

The young man in the gorilla costume is hitting on her HARD as she let him know he ain't the one. I really forgot how well Robert Palmer did this song! Thanks for sharing! That said, this is Cherelle's song! And I have always absolutely loved her voice. Mariah was decent. I liked it, but you could tell that her voice was dropped on top of the music. She didn't get the timing quite right. Where as Robert Palmer flipped it to something new. I like them all for different reasons.
Cherelle's is a banger above all others, it got me to dive into her stellar career. But it's a real sign of great bone structure that Palmer can cover it as a rearrangement and strike gold.
Cherelle wins easily plus the amazing production/song writing team Jam/Lewis(The Time group members) provided the stellar instrumentals. That Robert Palmer and Mariah Carey bands couldn't duplicate.
Jam/Lewis produced Mariah's version as well. They co-wrote and produced a lot of material on her "Glitter" album, since it's an 80's themed album as well as other projects Mariah has done throughout the years.

Between these two, Cherelle did better. And I know Cherelle was 1st , but I loved Robert's version. For me Robert & Cherelle are a close tie & Mariah is last. Not saying she was bad, just not as good as originals. Robert's is so much smoother.

Bullshit. I was a teen in that era and vaguely remember her version. Watched and heard her version recently. Didn't do anything for me. It wasn't even sexy. Nothing against her but if Vanity had done it, it might have been a different story. Did Prince write this? It sound like him. I think it was Terry Lewis maybe? Then I watched Robert Palmer's version. His vocals are so sexy. In the video he is being coy and then it made perfect sense: for a woman to do this, it would too ordinary and predictable. He adds irony being a man and it makes the song. It flips the gender role expectations. I'm not even listening to Mariah. 🤦

@@lemurianchick You might have been a teen but it doesnt sound like you were into music in a big way at the time as anyone who knows funk and soul knows that it doesn't get much better than the Cherrelle version, its definitely the gold standard. Everything about it is perfection from the slamming drum programming, the incredible synth solo, thundering bassline and vocal performance, excellent backing vocals, no one can sing this better. The other two versions are good, probably one of MC's best R&B songs although it adds nothing much to the original and RP version excellent.
Definitely, Palmer's version is IT. Much smoother and it has aged way better than the other two. Sometimes the original is just that and it's not enough to make it automatically superior than it's covers.
Cherelle's version is easily #1 for me it still sounds great & will always be a classic so funky & catchy plus it personifies the dance era of the 80's.Robert Palmer was #2 I loved this one too it was infectious & sorry but Mariah comes in #3 it just doesn't do it for me but it was ok.
Cherrelle, no contest, ok maybe a little but the OG bodied it, MC did alright but it was too much happening, Cherrelle just rode the beat perfect from beginning to end, might be one of Mariah's only spankings

I like Cherrelle’s and Robert Palmer’s versions. Cherrelle’s version is more poppy and danceable while Palmer’s version is way smoother. I never want to hear that Mariah version ever again in my lifetime though, hahaha!
I came up in the 80's when this song came out, It was huge in the hood, clubs, parties. No water down version can't compare to it. Forget the pop charts. Authenticity is Cherrelle version of the song💯
All these microaggresions against Mariah are why she still can't get her flowers after 30 years. She went to Jam and Lewis for the original track because she obviously loves this era. And I'll be the first one to admit that she improved on the original concept and made a club hit into something radio friendly and melodic
I personally love Mariah music especially her very soulful I Will Never Get You. When it comes to this song Mariah personality doesn't fits this song she always had a more sweet quiet girl personality with a classical singing voice. Her body was sexy but she never had that strong inner sexual vibe that is needed to carry this song like Cherelle who have that straight tough girl/sexy energy. Cherelle have the energy similar to the women that was part of Prince music family ex Shelia E and Vanity 6.
She just sounds like a girl who should be singing something else suited for that kind of voice. This is not her song, and she didn’t sing it the way it’s supposed to be sung. Cherrelle actually added emotion to her version. She really sounds apologetic about leading some poor dude on, while Mariah’s scatting sounds like a misunderstanding turned into a rape charge. “She SAID ‘no’, but she was calling me into the bedroom with her finger at the same time, your honor...!”. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
One word for Mariah's version... " KARAOKE!!! " her version barely made a dent on the airwaves, heck I didn't know until maybe 5 years ago that she done a remake but her vocal theatrics doesn't gel with the groove
