"Can I" is a song written by Herman Griffith & Hal Davis that first appeared on Temptations singer Eddie Kendricks' solo debut, All Bu Myself. It was later covered by Showtime At The Apollo Amateur Champion David Peaston for his 1989 debut Lp. Listen to both performances and share your thought in the comments section. Giving my vote to Eddie. Being a born and raised former Detroiter, bnngs back memories of going to Simpson's Record Shop (Donnie Simpson's family) to pick up the latest hits. During those days, our people looked out for one another. Thanks for the posting.

Eddie. No question. I grew up on David's but Eddie took it to another level. Motown for life. RIP to both men. Fun fact: David's aunt was Fontella Bass, who did the 60s hit Rescue Me.

BOTH are great, no comparing! David, my friend, brother, fellow St. Louisan and powerhouse vocalist! I knew his famous mother Martha Bass Peaston, his sister Fontella Bass(Rescue me). Love Eddie's version the best! Love David's interpretation as well. (pull up Martha Bass on You Tube-I'm So Grateful)

Peaston did a very nice one based on Eddie's original but I give it to Eddie's soft and impassioned version. We shouldn't compare versions because the latest version always has the original version to work from. Nice job by Peaston but ... Eddie K all day! 🔊

David was clearly influenced by Eddie however the inspirer can never be overtaken by the inspiree. Eddie's version not only being the original, is more soulful. Eddie's version just makes you want to grab your woman & give her what she's been BEGGIN' FOR FROM YOU, ALL THIS TIME, (if you don't know what that is, TURN IN YOUR PLAYER'S CARD)!!! The scat from David doesn't work for me. David turned in a nice performance, but Eddie KEEPS ON TRUCKIN' WITH THIS ONE!!! EDDIE WINS!!! reelblack, you should've known better baby...LOL!!!

Vocally I think both are great. Eddie is loving making on a rainy night. David's is Saturday night loung with a shot of cognac. At least that's what I feel.

David was my boy great guy and I heard his version first although I knew it was a remake. Vocally both kill it but the original track is special. So Eddie takes this one.

OG version is a lot more intimate and memorable. Cover is great vocally but arguably overproduced in comparison but works great as part of an album.

Eddie Kendricks laid a great foundation, but David Peaston perfected this song. He took it to another level and made it his own. And whoever arranged the newer version was brilliant.

Wow, no doubt about it, these two singers had terrific talents and blessed us with beautiful music. So far as this cover is concerned, I have to give it to Mr. Peaston. He had an impeccable vocal range that was incomparable. This is one of my favorites by him. Sadly, both these musical giants died too soon. Peace and Blessings!!!

Kendricks had the voice of an angel....you will never hear anyone on his stratosphere. David on the other hand, was just very gifted...and he added a technique to his version, that REALLY got your attention, because NO ONE was touching anything that any Temptation had gotten ahold of. That said, the original is just pure magic.

The David recording is definitely more crisp and adds that Extra something special. I am a true fan of the Piano so I gravitate to that alone because of the jazzy sound only a piano can bring. Both are Excellent Work!!❤❤❤
