Who Did It Better? - Otis, Stevie or Aretha (1965/1967)

Back in the days when you could remake another person's hit as a single or album filler, in 1967, Aretha Franklin thrust herself into superstardom with her cover version of Otis Redding's 1965 hit. Stevie Wonder did his version of Aretha's record for his 1967 LP, I Was Made To Love Her, one of the few instances of a Motown remake of a Star hit (and likely the only Motown cover of an Atlantic release). No right or wrong answers. Listen to all three, then please share your thoughts in the comments.

Otis. Did it the way funky tracks are meant to be done. Aretha gave it the soul she's always given. Stevie gave it a Pop/R&B feel

I think Stevie Wonder was just paying homage to Otis. If you listen closely to the being of Stevie's rendition it's playing Tramp by Otis.

Is this really a contest. Aretha stamped this as her own. When people think of Respect R-E-S-P-E-C-T they first think of the Queen of Soul

This song, RESPECT was written by Otis. He did it his way; Aretha did it hers, even though she got more mileage out of it than Otis. I didn't realize Stevie even sang this one. I will take not one thing from either of these musical gems.

Aretha's secret weapon was her sister, Carolyn, who is credited with creating and arranging the background vocals for Respect. Plus, she had three more weapons, not so secret, namely producers Jerry Wexler and Arif Mardin and engineer Tom Dowd. Together, they created the perfect record.

The Queen of Soul - ARETHA! She commands that respect in her voice, & makes you want to dance along as well! OTIS always had a funky, raw R & B style that made you bob your head, & stomp your feet, & STEVIE a more Pop-R & B style that's playful, & fun to listen to.

I do not think this song was famous until Aretha sang it. It became a Woman's Anthem. Everyone was dancing to it. The background vocals enhanced it. Sock it to Me, sound of the 60's. Great Soul Music from a woman's point of view. Aretha OWNS this song,. This is her signature song. Iconic, a Classic!!!

Back in the day, you could sell a lot of records with a strictly "Soul Music / Black Radio Station" hit. Otis was consistently on these charts, good for 100,000 + in sales. NEVER on the Pop Music Charts, until, of course his one big, posthumous hit. After that, at least his follow - ups were played, although they weren't as strong. I heard his version of "Try A Little Tenderness" on KGFJ - AM in Los Angeles. I HAD to buy the album "Dictionary of Soul." Great! "Hawg For You Baby" brings Modern Blues, back! Of course, 3 Dog Night had the Pop Hit. Aretha's version was the perfect result of various talented people. She & her sisters worked out the "Sock It To Me!" part, and Jerry Wexler noticed that there was no real 'Bridge.' He suggested lifting the middle instrumental break from Sam & Dave's "When Something Is Wrong With My Baby," kind of a slow part, and having King Curtis play over this. (You can hear this, if you listen with some care). To top it off, this was 'just' an album track, until Jocks 'demanded' that this be released, as a single! The result, is incendiary! And 'for the Record,' an Ann Arbor rock group, the Rationals (we could use them, in Politics, today!) had a small hit with a cover of "Respect" in late 1966. On Cameo - Parkway. Before Aretha. Listenable, O K, but nothing can beat Aretha's arrangement!

First and foremost, all three of these interpretations, speaks of the wonderment of soul music. Redding's style is gritty and lace with the needs of an older man. Stevie version is more of a youthful yawning...and Aretha is more of an expression of a woman liberating herself and her sexual prowess.

If it helped sell the record they would. You gotta remember. It was hard for black artists to break through. To the white market. In the early sixties. It's called marketing. A different time and place in music history.
