Im a 59's baby, Never knew who baby Huey was, I may have heard of him, but I don't remember him, love Curtis Mayfield's voice, he was my mamas groove, but baby Huey, he rocked that hard times. I was feeling it "hard times" more in my soul with baby Huey, he sound & look like he was really having hard times for real.

My goodness, Huey's version has that raw emotion with those blaring horns and Curtis' version has a laid back funky swagger! They both sound good, even back to back and tell-the-absolute truth! This combo would make a great soundtrack for the lives of many.💙

I'm partial to Baby Huey on this one. Curtis Mayfield's sound is very soulful with that street hustler after hours joint sound. Reminds you of the Vietnam war era when heroin was ravaging our community; prostitution; cops on the take. Baby Huey signed to Curtom Records (owned by Curtis Mayfield) and only came out with ONE album, but, his stuff was full of the rebelliousness of that same time period. Baby Huey is the one I lean more toward because his drum breaks not only were sampled in hip hop tracks by some of the best producers, but, his drum breaks were an integral part of early hip hop when the youth from '72 to '76 were rocking with a new energy. They were forming hip hop music and culture when it wasn't called hip hop but were only playing and dancing to the heavy percussion breaks of many different genres. One important DJ to note was DJ KOOL HERC. Thank God for Mr. Curtis Mayfield and Baby Huey.

So Baby Huey's version is better because of the musical arrangement, in my opinion. However we must give Curtis (the legend) props for his version as well...and respect for being the architect of the song, itself.

I like Baby Huey's version, very fast paced and somewhat psychedelic- which makes sense in 1971.However, taking Mayfield out of the equation, I think the second track was stripped down and spaced in a way that one could groove to it and still catch the meaning. That was the Mayfield way. Mayfield wins.

Curtis, cool & collected. Huey, straight to the point. The redo always has to bring something extra, bring another wrinkle in. Huey certainly couldn't do it the Curtis did...he had bring another dimension to the tune. Curtis gets an A. Huey gets an A+ for bringing that extra that made the tune better. Better meaning that Huey gave the tune a boost, a lift, that increased the value of the tune

First, never realized these were different versions of the same song or that it was written by Curtis. They’re so different Second, both have been used as samples in hip-hop. Verdict... BABY HUEY all day!!! Baby Hue was a force set to take music by storm but his journey was cut short. Curtis sure knew how to find superior talent. Jerry Butler, Donny Hathaway, Baby Huey, etc. The list goes on

Both cuts serve different purposes. If I'm riding around it's gonna be Baby Huey; too much energy and much harder. Curtis' version is for the house, an adult beverage and thangs so I can get my head around whatever I have to do. Much more intimate.

This is a tough call because I love both versions - Curtis' is old school laid back funky smooth, while Baby Huey's is hard, raw funky soulful! But Curtis will always be the master lyricist, & whose sounds I grew up loving, & listening to. Guess it all depends upon what kind of mood I'm in, as to which I'd play first.

In 1969, she left the Panthers and dropped out of high school, having attended Calumet High School and Kenwood High School (now Kenwood Academy).[10] She began to perform in small groups around the Chicago area, first performing with Cash McCall's group Lyfe, which included her then-boyfriend Hassan Khan. She was asked to replace Baby Huey of Baby Huey & the Babysitters after Huey's death in 1970. The group disbanded a year later. While performing in local bands in 1972, Khan was spotted by two members of a new group called Rufusand soon won her position in the group (replacing rock n roll singer Paulette McWilliams). They later signed with ABC Records in 1973. Prior to signing with the label, she married Khan, changing her stage name to Chaka Khan.

Baby Huey's version is much better. I guess those who vote for Curtis do it just because they love Mayfield, he's much more famous. But Huey sang it way better, there's a lot of such a dramatic and tragic pain. We can see Baby Huey can't stand it no more. Curtis version is also wonderful and soulful but where is that pain? It seems like he sings about something regular bad, but Baby's nearly crying that tune
