Fan's chiquita is the best I've seen for that technique, but Lin's backhand seems to be more effective in long rallies and it's more fluid and effortless. I think Lin's backhand might work for longer in the future because other players are more familiar with the shot qualtites of Fan's backhand at this point.
@Chris.Morales
@Chris.Morales Год назад
Easy question. Lin has a stronger and faster backhand, because his stroke, like MA Long’s Forehand, is a full stroke, whilst Fan’s backhand is a wrist oriented backhand. So wrist power vs full stroke power, full stroke will win all the time. Also full stroke allows you to stop infront of you to go parallel backhand, or do the full stroke and go across the table backhand. Which tricks enemies, they can’t predict if the ball is going parallel or cross table.

Both players have excellent backhand shots. There is a slight difference, Fan used his left hand more as a spring to uncoil the power and stabilize the consistency of the shot. He embodies the PRC's special "Power from the ground" to get the maximum power and the speed to his right wrist upon the impact of the shot. While the previously mentioned left hand provide him with the direction and the consistency of the placement. Meanwhile, Lin use more with his strong upper body and swing his right arm as a sling for instant explosiveness and impact. Since his preparation of the backhand shots are the same, therefore his opponents cannot read the direction of where the ball will go to. This can be a very good disguise. However, this style is a lot more inefficient and wasteful overtime in terms of impacting maximum power and without really the left hand as a guide, timing of the shot would be off. This is a personal preference but in terms of consistency, compactness, power and effectiveness, Fan is the model example of what the backhand shot should be. His video would be an excellent coaching tool of how to maximize the backhand effortlessly.

I prefer LS backhand anytime. It looks very natural. FZD tends to focus on too much brute force and therefore makes unecessary errors during execution.

Currently, making a comparison between the two individuals is not fair due to a significant age difference of nine years. This length of time is substantial when considering the evolution of a player in terms of their skills, experience gained from hours spent on the table, and the number of matches they have played.

At my level (which is probably 25 levels lower than these two guys!) I see the same dilemma. Some guys are able to do more spectacular shots with their backend compared to mine, but they are not as consistant. I will typically win 80 % of the matches against players who are more gifted in terms of physically being able to make outrageous shots which wow the observers, but they also miss quite often, are a bit stuck in their all or nothing approach. With my back end which is not as flashy but much more solid, at the end of the games, it is usually in my favour. I am taking obviously of players at a similar level of skills. Such contrat would show, if it was tennis, 20 winners for them against 13 winners for me, but also 20 unforced errors for them against 5 for me. It is the reason that for the time being, I prefer FZD back end, but Shidong is only 17, I am pretty convinced that he will grow his strategic and tactical approach to the sport, being able to use less risky shots at times, better at varying the pace, using various paths to winning a point while continuing to amaze us with the incredible strength of this back end. This is what makes Ma Long so incredibly good: not only his technical abilities but his capability to adapt his playing to how the match is going and to what the opponent is giving him. This is why ML will often lose the first match only to bounce back with 3 wins and a final victory. Shidong will get there, he has the coaches to help him and the fierce adversaries and training partners on the chinese national team to develop his game to the next level.

Similar story for me, consistency over strength usually gets me the win. I think more consistent players can also improve more quickly.
@MrCooperscoopers

well, you can look at the time when FZD was 17. At that time FZD was almost No.1 or No. 2 in China - he already beat everyone at China super league and every match he lost was a surprise. Lin obviously is not at that level now. I think they met in super league recently and FZD beat lin easily.
@yudistiraliem135

On lower levels consistency wins. For lower ranked countries I find that the same phenomena is true even to provincial level players in terms of serve return philosophy.
@MrCooperscoopers
@MrCooperscoopers Год назад
@@yudistiraliem135 well you look at the match between wan manyu and wan yidi, you know even at the highest level, consistency still wins. The ball is bigger now so the speed is slower, one smash usually doesn't kill especially at woman side.

Does any feel like the lateral camera view (side to side) makes it difficult or completely unable to gauge the sense of how powerful someone's speed is? It's no comparison to the back of the table perspective. Placement, speed, spin, technique; it's all hard to get a sense of just how awesome the shots are

At their respective bests, FZD's backhand is far better in every way. LSD has a good backhand, but I think people are getting caught up in a moment or an individual match and forgetting how amazing FZD's backhand is, basically allowed him to dominate top-5 players since age 16.

The images here, sometimes, don't fit properly (with the players). It is better to see them in a single match every one of them. We should consider that Zan Zhendong has a better backhand because he has worked years in his technique...anyway it's a matter of preferences. Some things ,of course, can be measured...or most of them like:speed,spin, strength,etc. In science everything is measurable (if not... nearly all). Another thing we can see here is that both having a good backhand (and as many players with good backhand) aren't using Chinese rubbers. Of course it has to do with that skill, techniques and players choice. Another important point to consider is the "time" of table tennis we are in... Plastic ball, no speed glue, 40mm ball which makes a big difference with the backhand used by Kreanga, Persson, Waldner,etc. years ago.

@@seeker3983 also used too much energy. You do not need to use that much force to make a 40mm 2.7 gram plastic ball go ballistically fast! A natural swing stroke will send the ball like a rocket when done correctly. Only when you have bad form is that you have to punch or use extra force to send a ball really fast. That’s why you always see Calderano profusely sweating and almost dead when it’s 7 set matches. He doesn’t manage his energy well. He’s a bull on the first sets, then moves like a snail on the last ones.
